Matt Damon Speaks On Why He Walked Away From BOURNE - Wishes Renner Luck

Speaking with GQ about his latest movie We Bought A Zoo, Damon mentions why he wouldn't return to any further Bourne movies:

"If you look at the first three movies, we kind of pounded that idea of identity and amnesia into the ground. We really got everything out of it that we could. So to reboot it, we need to come up with something completely new."

He also touched on Tony Gilroy's failed Bourne Ultimatium script which was heavily rewritten:

"I don't blame Tony for taking a boatload of money and handing in what he handed in. It's just that it was unreadable. This is a career-ender. I mean, I could put this thing up on eBay and it would be game over for that dude. It's terrible. It's really embarrassing. He was having a go, basically, and he took his money and left."

Damon admits that Jeremy Renner's casting was "A surprise." But that he hoped the movie did well "[I’m] really pulling for this one, even though I don’t have anything to do with it. Selfishly, it’s bad for me if that movie doesn’t do well."

It's refreshing to see that Damon wouldn't return to the role just for the sake of another movie. While it would have been interesting to see where Jason Bourne would go next, it's easy to see Damon's point. While there may be some tension about the script, it seems Damon wishes everyone well. Since Renner is not playing Bourne, there are some rumors about a future return of Bourne in some capacity.

Damon is right. Its over, there's nothing left to milk. And they get a guy that looks even olde to reboot?

@Neo I don't think Renner is playing Bourne. I don't think Bourne will be in this at all, it's just taking place in the same fictional world.

Could be wrong, but that was how it was explained to me when I made fun of the fact that Bourne was going to be older in the reboot.

I actually dont blame Matt Damon, if he sounds bitter. First off, they announced a new trilogy with a new star without even consulting Damon.....and considering the first trilogy was his baby, I'd dont blame him for being pissed off.
Second, everything he said is true, whether it sounds bitter or not. Tony Gilroy DID write a draft for Bourne that was ultimately rejected and Damon is basically just reiterating what other people have said in the past.....that it sucked, big time.

So who can blame him being a bit annoyed by all this.....and besides, he's actually supposed to be a pretty nice guy.

I thought the third Bourne film wrapped up all the loose ends and answered all the questions from the first two films, and new ones that were raised in the third one itself. The story was done and complete. There is no need to do another Bourne film except to overmilk a successful franchise for every cent they can get out of it. I'm glad Damon had more integrity than to sell out a great character for an easy buck.

damon tells it like it is, and hes a smart man so he doesnt sound stupid while saying it. i respect him for it, and think hes a great actor, and it was a smart move not to do another one, the last one wasnt a good movie.

damon looks like he would be a cool guy to have a beer with

Damon may be really hot and smart, but that was really a bad decision! He IS Bourne and I don`t think it was a good idea that Renner should replace him. Seriously?! Renner is good but I would rather see the original...

I loved all the 3 movies

@ZombieOverEasy Thanks for clearing that up. Now I know for sure it won't be worth seeing. It's just a random action movie using the Bourne title to draw a crowd.

These movies helped make him into a house hold name and they are great films. I'd like to see him make another but I think the Jason Bourne part of the story has been played out. So good on him for wanting to make a quality movie and not just a paycheque. Shows that he cares about the work he does.

I'm interested to see where they take it with Renner and how they incorporate him into the franchise.

What's left in the story? Everything was pretty much cleared up at the end. There's no need for a 4th movie. They're only trying to make money from the name "Bourne." Why would you take a shit on a perfectly great trilogy? I back Damon up 100% on this.

I didn't find his comments being asshole-ish or sounding bitter. He's just telling it like it is. He's actually a really smart guy and he just made a smart move.

I have to believe Damon at his word, if anyone knows anything about whether a script is good or not its him.

Anyone who thinks he was being an A-Hole is clueless.
