By Thorverine - 2/19/2012

Early analysis had Ghost Rider coming in second place with a solid $25 million opening. Whether it was by word of mouth, online petitions by fans to boycott the film in support of Gary Friedrich, or having seen the first film Ghost Rider came in third place with $22 million. Rentrak has the weekend box office projected figures. The Denzel Washington/Ryan Reynolds flick Safe House edged out The Vow in a close race. While Ghost Rider finished a close third, it was a disappointing opening. The first film made $45 million the opening weekend with $115 million total, stay tuned to see the final figures but it looks like we may be spared a third trip with The Rider.

1. Safe House $23,969,280
2. The Vow $23,600,000
3. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance $22,000,000
4. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island $20,085,000
5. This Means War $17,550,000
6. Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace 3D $7,865,000
7. Chronicle $7,500,000
8. The Woman in Black $6,645,000
9. The Secret World of Arrietty $6,375,000
10. The Grey $3,031,454

So, seen the movie yet? Are you surprised it finished 3rd? Thoughts, feelings, smart remarks? Sound off below!

surprised safe house made so much it looked like your typical action thriller
Jobu - 2/19/2012, 11:32 AM
Not surprised at all...
RunDTC - 2/19/2012, 11:56 AM
does he piss fire in the movie?
AlexDeLarge87 - 2/19/2012, 12:03 PM
Ghost Rider looked great but everything else in the movie failed badly so this isnt surprising at all.

Neveldine & Taylor cant direct shit.
They can make action scenes look intense but about it.
AlexDeLarge87 - 2/19/2012, 12:03 PM
i meant thats about it
xmen145 - 2/19/2012, 12:18 PM
@Thorverine- that's gotta be the gayest comic book movie scene in history!
SKOne - 2/19/2012, 1:25 PM
The movie is probably average, but it might not have done well because of forcing people to see it in 3D. Only the smallest and most out of the way theater in my city was showing it in 2D.
marvel72 - 2/19/2012, 1:26 PM
saw chronicle today, that was pretty good didn't bother with ghost rider 2 waiting for mate to get it on download.
Cheesehead - 2/19/2012, 1:32 PM
This movie was terrible in just about every way. If they try this again, they need to blow the whole thing up. Get someone who actually resembles Johnny Blaze and make this a Blade type movie. Almost a horror movie, type of feel. And for God sakes, no more Nick Cage!
SKOne - 2/19/2012, 1:36 PM
I guess this also ruins the chances of Neveldine and Taylor making a Twisted Metal movie. Sony won't let them do anything else after this letdown.
marvel72 - 2/19/2012, 1:39 PM
the only good that might come from this is the rights go back where they belong....

marvel studio's.
Cheesehead - 2/19/2012, 2:08 PM
@teabag- Did you see it?
Cheesehead - 2/19/2012, 2:16 PM
@teabag- Good call. What a pile of shit.
Checkmate - 2/19/2012, 3:20 PM
Yay. I've got fingers crossed on having it back in the hands of Marvel Studios.
ckal - 2/19/2012, 4:07 PM
Don't ever try to make a ghost rider movie again...anyone. Even marvel studios shouldn't waste their time with this character on screen. It will only end in box office disappointment.
thewonderer - 2/19/2012, 4:13 PM
@ckal

you're an idiot
Kabfire - 2/19/2012, 4:17 PM
Just saw safe house with my girl and we both really enjoyed it. Safe house was even better than we thought it was going to be. Sad about GR2 but definitely not unexpected. Wanted this to be good but gonna wait until rental.
jessepostal - 2/19/2012, 4:19 PM
@tea, did you watch the real ending after the credits?
2gold - 2/19/2012, 4:21 PM
Yeah, the character isn't the problem, half the cast are bad acting in this. Cage, Whitworth and Hindis are terrible. Cage is just doing a odd mix of crazy and yet going through the motions. The story isn't bad, its average. Acting just kills. Replace those three and its actually Got a shot at being a decent popcorn film.
greenlanter13 - 2/19/2012, 4:22 PM
Crap rider: spirit of ass lol it sucks that they can't give ghost rider a good movie
Supes17 - 2/19/2012, 4:24 PM
Uhm yeah, [frick] this movie
ClaireLannister2016 - 2/19/2012, 4:25 PM
well when ya made a crappy movie that usually happens
darkjoker1 - 2/19/2012, 4:30 PM
thats a bummer that its behind the vow and safe house it should be first yes i know it looks like a crappy Nic cage flim but it looks good and i would rather see this then the the shitty movies safe house and the vow
novaprime - 2/19/2012, 4:33 PM
yea he does piss fire
antonio - 2/19/2012, 4:35 PM
@Rundtc twice.
antonio - 2/19/2012, 4:37 PM
And yes, this movie sucked donkey balls. Does it make part one(which really wasn't a good film to begin with) look like The Dark Knight? To some extent, yes.
continuezero - 2/19/2012, 4:43 PM
Hey Rider, if you hurry you might be able to get back to Marvel in time for them to film a quick cameo scene in Avengers.
santoanderson - 2/19/2012, 4:47 PM
Newsflash: People hate shitty movies... unless you're a Twilight fan, in which case shit is a good thing.
GUNSMITH - 2/19/2012, 4:47 PM
IT WAS THE MANIC CAMERA SHOOTING.
CMKOFAN - 2/19/2012, 4:50 PM
regardless of what you guys say. i like every marvel superhero movie out there so far even howard the duck. but this movies was just a piece of shit. i just wasted my money on this crap. at leas the popcorn and soda were good.
AlienRobotZombieOverlord - 2/19/2012, 5:07 PM
Should have been rated R and played up the horror angle
maverickaim9 - 2/19/2012, 5:12 PM
The only reason this movie made that kind of money it's because of the 3D pushing at movie theaters. I saw it yesterday and was forced to shell out $20 at Regal movie theater for its Regal Premium Xperience (RPX). While the sound is awesome and picture quality too, this movie was utter cow doo-doo. This is the worst movie I've ever seen, apart from crank 1 and 2.
AlienRobotZombieOverlord - 2/19/2012, 5:15 PM
@mothman add Avengers and that's my list too
95 - 2/19/2012, 5:30 PM
I'd like to see Marvel Studios/Disney go around with this character.

@santoanderson

LOL. True, true.
marvel72 - 2/19/2012, 5:30 PM
give it a couple of years let marvel studio's make a ghost rider/blade movies.

you could have a two part r-rated horror movies & have blade & ghost rider fight each other than team up against a common threat.

Jimdlux - 2/19/2012, 5:43 PM
Just saw it...What was I thinking?...What were "they" thinking? This was a bad movie...
gunner - 2/19/2012, 5:46 PM
I think having to ponie up anywhere from 12 to 15 bucks for a movie has alot to do with it , OK just does not cut it anymore for those prices , The Studio's Make the Big bucks on the Bigger Pictures.
I'm sure it's better than the first and i'll get around to seeing it , but for now I'M BROKE !
Cheesehead - 2/19/2012, 5:54 PM
@gunner- Thats really debatable. The first is probably the overall better movie. Seriously. This thing was really bad. I saw it 2D for 6 bucks. I would have been pissed if I paid to see this shit bag in 3D.
brewtownpsych - 2/19/2012, 6:12 PM
Here we go again. THIS MOVIE WAS MADE BY MARVEL STUDIOS. what are people in complete denial for some reason. the movie was produced by Avi Arad and Marvel Knights, a production arm of MARVEL STUDIOS for its lesser known characters

What is with people already ... Columbia is the distributor.

Greenlantern1417 - 2/19/2012, 6:43 PM
Bring on Green Lantern 2. Maybe he'll piss green energy. Yeah, marvel makes great movies. (major sarcasm).
thalidomide - 2/19/2012, 7:26 PM
Good thing I don't have time to watch this movie. I dodge a bullet :P
deanwilkins - 2/19/2012, 7:27 PM
I'm surprises the crap that is Star Wars Phantom Menace was even in the top ten? Who would even waste their money on that?
BlanketMan - 2/19/2012, 7:32 PM
Very odd movie. I usually like Cage, but he was the biggest problem in the flick, IMO. I empathized a LOT more with Blaze in the first GR movie - in this sequel, he was just there. Moreau (Idris Elba) was by far the best thing in the movie, and his presence kept me moderately interested throughout. The effects were awesome - I loved how whatever vehicle GR operated turned "GR-ish." But overall, it was a bit of a mess. I'm one of the few who kinda enjoyed the original, and this one, sadly, couldn't compare to it. I had some fun with GR:SOV, but that's cuz I'm a die-hard Bronze-Age GR fan - just seeing GR so well done visually on-screen earns a few points from me...
pro346 - 2/19/2012, 7:40 PM
The movie cost 57 million to make so its not that far of of making half its production budget back in the opening weekend.....I'm sure it will turn a profit.
CaptainObvious - 2/19/2012, 7:50 PM
Give it 10 years before doing another Ghost Rider film. 15 if people hate this more than Batman and Robin.
Ceejay - 2/19/2012, 7:53 PM
One day some fanboys are gonna finally realise that Ghost Rider aint a character attractive to mass audiences enough to earn a decent box office receipt so stop blaming the likes of directors, actors and online petitions etc. It's not even a hugely popular comic amongst the saddest of fanboys so don't expect rational thinking joe-public to take a remote interest no matter how much they spend on marketing or cut the budget to make a quick profit!

Same goes for Green Lantern, nobody in their right mind gives a flying monkeys about a colour coded superhero with a magic ring that makes silly shapes, kids stuff, not appealing to regular adults in any way shape or form so don't expect it to make money!
Nick56 - 2/19/2012, 8:37 PM
Honestly, I blame the directors. They didn't know what the hell they were doing.
TheShakeBake - 2/19/2012, 8:56 PM
Yes the film was horrible , but honestly I really liked the whole final chase/fight scene at the end of the movie! Everything else( and i mean everything) SUCKED but I felt like that battle scene was pretty damn good, and goes down in my top 10 Marvel movie fight scenes.
MightyThor1 - 2/19/2012, 9:35 PM
It wasnt that bad of a film I enjoyed it for the most part but nic cage fits to go!
JasonCYates - 2/19/2012, 9:38 PM
SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!!!! I wasn't expecting MACBETH, but the story doesn't resolve anything for BLAZE, He agrees to help retrieve the Boy (Danny) that Rourke (the Devil) is after, because he is promised that his curse will be lifted, which it is, and in an awfully plain way I must add. After that he still stays involved? Why? what the Hell does he think he can do, and why does he care about this boy and his Mother, he just met them like a day ago, then Danny discovers he has the powers of the Devil, which apparently he had to be told this before he could use them, and does so by giving Blaze his curse back to defeat Rourke, w/o even asking, so it's not like Blaze sacrifices his humanity for the greater good, it's just thrust back upon him with some changes. If the kid has the powers of the Devil, why doesn't he defeat the bad guys himself, why would he give Blaze back the one thing he spent the entire movie stating he does not want? Then Blaze is OK with it because now apparently he can feel the angel ZARATHOS, the Rider once was, upon him? Granted now he has more control over it and can change day or night and has some kinda healing/resurrection gift, but in the end he's only slightly better off than when he started. I wish the kid had turned all the power back on the Devil to send him to Hell, fighting fire with fire, and kept the Ghost Rider curse for himself, since he seems to like THE RIDER, and in another movie he is played by a teen actor and takes over for Blaze, which would have been a more satisfying resolution. Then they could be preparing for a MIDNIGHT SONS film!!!
