Superman: Everyone's Christ

Why Superman is a mirror of Jesus Christ in modern times. My most controversial article of all time...

By TheCrisisKing - 1/10/2010
Recently, in a previous article I drew comparisons between Superman and Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Many of you went into uproar and couldn't see the similarities. Yes, they are subtle and hidden but there are prominent and clear similarities...

First, let us start with the origin. Now depending on the story, the general story is this. A man of great and unimaginable power and wisdom sends his one and only son to a kindly couple incapable of giving birth to a child. They later find out that around time the boy begins to become a child he demonstrates wisdom and tasks beyond that of any mortal man. It is later recognized that this child will grow up to become one of the most powerful and influential man of all time as he stands up against evil. Now, who did I just describe, Superman or Jesus? Don't tell me it is too vague of a story because here is the answer: Its both. Yes the minor details are different because, heck, Superman has been around longer than Jesus's life span.

Still, I find myself coming back to this quote, but this will be up for you to find out whether this was Jor El or the Metatron:
"They can be a great people...they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all, their capacity for good, I have sent them you my only son".

I can't help but feel the irony in the fact that two Jewish men created a character similar to Jesus in so many ways. But, maybe, just maybe when those two men sat down and thought about a character who will change everything maybe they thought of what they thought their Messiah will be. Maybe they wanted it to be like Jesus. Maybe they did it unintended without realizing it. We will never know. But what we do know is that they created something that will forever represent good and fight the tyranny of men.

"No, the real American has not yet arrived. He is only in the Crucible, I tell you - he will be the fusion of all races, perhaps the coming superman."- Israel Zangwill

Not the first time I've heard the comparison. I will agree that there are some similarities, but it's also quite easy to draw many similarites between existing people/ideas. Take the X-Men, Stan the Man is quite open about the fact that the idea of the X-Men represents racism and discrimination in the real world.

Ultimately, it just comes down to what you believe.
Wadey09 - 1/10/2010, 10:12 PM
it's funny how people get offended by the tiniest things.
and when you look back on your life, and your choices, you might realize that you blew something WAY out of proportion.
i'm not calling anyone out or anything like that.
but CrisisKing was just pointing out similarities.
he wasn't proclaiming that everyone needs to repent.
(which would be AWESOME by the way.)
if this comment steps on anyone's toes, well crap happens.

@CrisisKing:
good article. i didn't read your last one but now i think i'll go back and read it.
when i actually spoke at my church i actually used Jor El's quote seen in your article.
i wouldn't mind reading more stuff like this so that we may have deeper comments and grow as a community.
not in numbers.
we have those.
i'm talking about relationships.

@Kes:
if you are offended by this article that is your right.

this may not be my most popular comment but crap happens.
Wadey out!
;)
Wadey09 - 1/10/2010, 10:27 PM
@Kes
you're welcome.
de nada.
prego.
whatever!
;P
longbowhunter - 1/10/2010, 10:43 PM
Sure, I can see the comparisons. I think its pretty obvious to most anybody. I dont see why anyone would find this offensive. Your comparing Superman to Jesus, not Jeffery Dahmer to Jesus!
longbowhunter - 1/10/2010, 11:16 PM
Savior

1.A person who rescues another from harm, danger, or loss
2.Christianity, Jesus

It appears both Superman and Jesus fit the definition. Really just depends on if your a Christian or not.
longbowhunter - 1/10/2010, 11:22 PM
Also I would like to say, CrisisKing's title can be perceived a number of ways. When I clicked on the article I assumed it would be something about how much more accessible Superman is compared to Jesus. "Everyone's Christ", not just one faith's hero, but everyones no matter your beliefs. That actually might have been more offensive!
peterparker420 - 1/10/2010, 11:28 PM
well I'm ready to make people mad!

I can see the comparison..NO I am not religious.
I haven't been to church since I was five..so that would make 20 years without going to church!..why
don't I go to church..Because what I hear from
sermons are a load of crap! No I am not an atheist,
I just don't belive STORIES that has NO facts to back them up..and if you're going to say the bible IS fact
then you goota be crazy (I am not saying you shouldnt think like I do, you're beliefs are you're beliefs)
But for me they are stories that got LOST in TRANSLATION
along time ago! I do belive in a god..just NOT jesus.
Since there was SO many men named JESUS back then who's to say that jesus was really THAT jesus and the SON OF GOD. They are just TALL tales from an Ancient time..I'll belive in Zeus before I belive in jesus!

For all you church goers out there I AM SORRY if I offened you!

I have Those Evangelist I see on TV..getting rich off the word of god..buy this holy water or holy cloth and all you're prays will be answered..GIVE ME A BREAK,
religion is just another word for CULT.

ALL YOU CHURCH GOERS..I DARE YOU TO LISTEN TO THESE SONGS!

AND YES I LOVE ICP..THEY ARE MY #1 MUSIC CHOICE!

peterparker420 - 1/10/2010, 11:36 PM
ohh i forgot to say this..ICP is secretly a rap group
who..LOVES GOD..don't belive me..they let the secret out
on there 6th joker card(CD)..here have a listen.

THIS SONG SOMES UP WHAT Insane Clown Posse is ALL ABOUT.
longbowhunter - 1/10/2010, 11:44 PM
Damn, this is what I'm talkin' about! We arent the first to mull this all over. Good find DogsOfWar, hell of a memory too! Warpath's comment was pretty enlighting.
HannibalSmith - 1/11/2010, 1:33 AM
What does this have to do with Comic book movies?
LEEE777 - 1/11/2010, 4:46 AM
GEZUZ lol!!

Hey he was a mutant!! : P

Buy ya SUPER JESUS merchandise here!!! ; P
CorndogBurglar - 1/11/2010, 5:34 AM
we'd probably be a lot better off if Jesus were more like Superman...haha. at least Superman actually takes action.

they would have a pretty hard time trying to nail him to a cross. lol

@ crisisking

your "friend" was deleting comments?? you're starting to sound like Ozy.
FORTAPACHE - 1/11/2010, 6:01 AM
watch a film called Zeitgeist and see what you think
dailycomicsfix - 1/11/2010, 6:08 AM
This is an old comparison. I've heard Bruce Timm, amongst others, discuss these comparisons before. This article says nothing new and the authors' motivations appear to be to drum up controversy and dissent instead to meaningful debate.

Oh, and whenever anyone uses the word Savior anywhere near the words Jesus and/or Christ EVERYONE knows exactly the interpretation of Savior your are implying. At least be up front about it.
LEEE777 - 1/11/2010, 6:08 AM
TEA @ Lmfao dude!! ; D

CORN @ Who's deleting what comments lol??
LEEE777 - 1/11/2010, 6:33 AM
Praise the lord!! ; D
StephenStrange - 1/11/2010, 7:52 AM
This is SO lame.
shiftysharp - 1/11/2010, 8:06 AM
at the end of the day if you were to bury a story book with no pics of superman stories in the desert and a global catastrophy happened, then a couple of thousand years down the line some scmuck finds it and starts a cult from that book,we have the same scenario as now only the christ person is replaced by kal-el.
CorndogBurglar - 1/11/2010, 8:42 AM
superman wasn't sent here by a "higher power". he was sent here by the equivalent of a scientist here on earth. especially considering that kryptonians are just normal, powerless people unless around a yellow sun. calling Jor-El a higher power is pushing things a tad.
Wadey09 - 1/11/2010, 9:29 AM
@Tea
for the record
would you mind pointing out to me the arguments against Jesus in the Bible.
i would REALLY like to hear them.
Betty - 1/11/2010, 9:51 AM
I know you guys have noticed how Hollywood seems to be running out of stories. They remake films from 5 to 70 years ago and then they spoon feed them to us and tell us it's revolutionary.

The story of Jesus, like the story of Superman, was written by men. Can people always come up with completely original stories every time they put pen to paper? No. They are influenced by what I call, "Mother Stories". Gilgamesh, Beowulf, Iliad, Odessey, the story of Jesus fits in there, kinda.

Even the story of Jesus is borrowed from other cultures. They did what Hollywood does now and apparently it's been going on since we could go, Ook! Ook! Take a great story, shave off the parts you don't like, introduce elements that you think will help sell better, add a little Razzle Dazzle for the wow factor and you've got yourself the story of Avatar! oops, I mean, Neo, no I mean Dune, nope I mean Superman, was it Jesus?
Betty - 1/11/2010, 9:53 AM
Wadey09-- Dude have you READ the bible? Or any part of it? Research stories in general and it will point you in the right direction.

He's not saying that the bible itself is denouncing Jesus. He's saying that reading the bible and interpreting it like an intelligent person will lead to that conclusion.

titties
BmanHall - 1/11/2010, 9:57 AM
Jesus would kick Superman's ass!

Betty - 1/11/2010, 10:01 AM
cool!
Wadey09 - 1/11/2010, 10:11 AM
@Betty
i have been saved since i was 8 years old.
i'm waiting for someone to actually point out controversial verses in the Bible that claim that Jesus is not the SON OF GOD.
don't give me a he wasn't born on December 25 excuse either.
Bible doesn't say that.
that's just when we followers of CHRIST celebrate his birth.

until someone can genuinely point out and back up actual errors in the BIBLE, i will read and believe in it faithfully.
StephenStrange - 1/11/2010, 10:12 AM
@ teabag: Yep. But it's no where near as good as that movie Fort Apache mentioned which presents incredibly convincing evidence that Jesus didn't actually exist.

@ Corndog: Your very kind. It's pushing things a bit more than a tad. Superman doesn't say that we will all be tortured for all eternity of we don't beleive in him. Nor does he say that believing in something else besides himself is wrong, nor does he claim to be the son of god, so on and so forth. The premise is a joke

@ Wadey: http://www.infidels.org/library/modern/jim_meritt/bible-contradictions.html That's really just a simplistic starting point. There's a lot more to be found on deeper analysis.

@ Crisisking: You can find anything if you look had enough. And I don't need any Christ. I don't need one from a comic book and I don't need one from the Buy-bull either. Furthermore I don't even like Superman much. He always seems boring and kind of generic to me.
Wadey09 - 1/11/2010, 10:12 AM
also by "intellgent" are you calling me dumb for my beliefs?
Wadey09 - 1/11/2010, 10:15 AM
@DarthMulder have you gone and researched in the Bible yourself for these contradictions?
we all have posted false rumors on the internet before whether we knew it or not.
also, Jesus never stated that he is the SON OF GOD.
"I am what I am."
those were HIS words.
he let his disciples infer what that meant after he performed MIRACULOUS miracles that no one has been able to duplicate.
Betty - 1/11/2010, 10:22 AM
Wadey09-- Yes, your beliefs are dumb. Ha ha, I had to I'm sorry.

I guess instead of intelligent, I should have used the word unbiased or uninfluenced mind. Also, if you know the history of the bible and under what circumstances it was written, would also lead you to the same conclusion.
Betty - 1/11/2010, 10:28 AM
MIRACULOUS miracles? lol!

Uh, what about David Copperfield or Chris Angel? Jesus was just the first magician.

"Everyone I have one fish to feed all of you! (puts fish behind back, then holds up two fish) I have two fish, two fish to feed all of you! My next show is at the sun's zenith. Be there or go to you know where!"

and the people go ahhhhhhhhhhhh!
Remy83 - 1/11/2010, 10:28 AM
Man i don't know what the big effin deal is i'm christian and i did not get offended. wow. an actual christian with an open mind. wow. never knew it was possible. @Crisisking great effin article. Boobs Photobucket

Photobucket
StephenStrange - 1/11/2010, 10:28 AM
@ Wadey and Crisisking: Why do xtians always feel the need to bother people about their beliefs ? Why do Muslims feel the need to kill people because of theirs?

I suspect answer to those two questions is the same answer and then that would tell us a lot about why this article was created.
StephenStrange - 1/11/2010, 10:29 AM
@ Wadey: Yes. But not too much because I don't give a damn what the bible says
BmanHall - 1/11/2010, 10:34 AM
@ DarthMulder: I'm a Christian and I'm not bothering anyone with it. Don't put all in the same bucket.
StephenStrange - 1/11/2010, 10:41 AM
I know, Beamer. That's true. But there are lots and lots that do, though.

StephenStrange - 1/11/2010, 10:45 AM
@ Bullied: Oh yes that's very simple. definitely. (sarcasm)
Wadey09 - 1/11/2010, 10:48 AM
@Darth
first, i must say that we Christians share our testimonies with others is because we are commanded to do it. it is Called the Great Commission.
Matthew 28:18-20
Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority on Heaven and on Earth has been given to me.Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commended you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
i also just read about twenty of the "contridictions" that this guy found in the Bible.
he is not an idiot. he did his research.
but he was still wrong.
many of the "errors" he pointed out he misinterpreted.
like #1 God of War or God of Peace?
good question.
ever heard of a concept called the Trinity?
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit?
it is difficult to understand even for my pastor.
but what i have gotten is that these three entities are all the same being. but different aspects.
The Father is strict and angry and jealous. He will smite down all who oppose him.
The Son, that would be Jesus, doesn't want God the Father to send us to Hell. this is a GREAT thing by the way.
so Jesus becomes the perfect sacrificeso that all who choose can spend eternity with God in Heaven.

so you may not care but I do care about whether someone goes to Heaven or Hell.
if i offend you i am sorry.
Betty - 1/11/2010, 10:52 AM
tea-- Your pics, lol!

StephenStrange - 1/11/2010, 10:56 AM
@ Dogs: No it's not in the least. At one time I spent some time looking into biblical/ theological criticism. I bought expensive books and wasted good hours pouring over them. I look back on that as a waste of time and energy, because ultimately I just don't care what the Bible says so I don't need to point out what an incredibly flawed, innacurate and non historical document it is.

I can just let every cheesy brainwashed little online proselytizer know that whatever their stupid old book says is of no consequence to me, and that takes care of all the tedious discussions.

Betty - 1/11/2010, 11:00 AM
Like this Trinity?
StephenStrange - 1/11/2010, 11:01 AM
@ Wadey: I don't care that you care. I don't care about your beliefs at all or anybody elses.
Wadey09 - 1/11/2010, 11:05 AM
@BullieNerd
thanks. but what's wwcd?

@Betty
haha. lol!
CorndogBurglar - 1/11/2010, 11:15 AM
@ darth

i thought of all that too my friend, lol. superman doesn't discriminate, if someone is in trouble, he helps them, bottom line. yet, you have to accept jesus as the only lord and savior if you want to get into heaven?? how is that "saving" anyone?? the only REAL thing they actually have in common are the fact that they're both fictional characters, lol.

not to offend anyone, just what i believe.
StrangerX - 1/11/2010, 11:23 AM
I don't know about Jesus the man being fiction. I think there is definitive proof of his death in Roman records that state there was an actual man from Nazereth named Jesus who was tried for the misuse of preachings. Pontius Pilate of course crucified him becuase that was the common way of punishment. For Pontius this was nothing normal that's why Jesus was crucified right next to regular criminals and theives. it was only after his death that the man became myth, and the myth of course a legend.
Wadey09 - 1/11/2010, 11:25 AM
@Corn
are you saying Jesus never existed?
that he's a figment of our imagination?
a dream?
because apparently a lot of people had the same dream from 4 BC to 30AD!
;)

CorndogBurglar - 1/11/2010, 11:26 AM
@ strangeman

i'm not talking about the real life jesus, but the supernatural, walking dead, time traveling, vampire-slaying, robot-fighting, fairy-tale jesus. his brother Jimmy Christ was way more interesting.

@ tea

lol
CorndogBurglar - 1/11/2010, 11:29 AM
@ wadey

yes, i understand that jesus was a real person, but the idea of him coming back from the dead and being the lord and savior is a little "Grimm's Fairytale" for me to take seriously.
StrangerX - 1/11/2010, 11:31 AM
@ Corndog. It's cool no worries. There are many different types of heroes to choose from. I just happened to grow up in different foster homes and get a real clear view of many different religions. I actually prefer the story of Superman over Jesus any day. Jesus' life is kinda scary dude.
CorndogBurglar - 1/11/2010, 11:35 AM
@ strange

lol, yeah, superman just wants to help everyone. THATS the kind of person i want deciding who should be "saved". not someone that has principals and ideals that are impossible for our modern society to meet.

all i'm saying is i find it a little crazy that, for the most part, the religion you grow up to believe in depends heavily on where you were born in the world. so everyone that was born in a part of the world that doesn't worship christianity is doomed to hell?? give me a break.
StrangerX - 1/11/2010, 11:39 AM
You make a good point. However, What laws does Superman follow. Is it mans laws or the American laws. If so if one country decided to attack another who would be the one to be saved.
