At this point I am convinced he could play Superman but is afraid he will be taken less seriously as an actor since he is on a show like Madmen.

WOOT WELLING FTW!
Forget about Routh (as they are doing)...
but it looks like Welling is mainly interested in playing Clark Kent, who's kind of a more interesting character than Supes anyway.

I don't feel like he's Superman. He's a god actor, just not Supes.

There's no way they will cast him. Welling or Routh has a better chance and are better choices.

"welling is more intrested in playing clark kent, who's kind of more intresting character than supes anyway."

you've just watched welling as clark kent for the last ten years.

you would rather watch clark kent than superman.

alright whatever floats your boat.

Welling sucks my left nut, I don't think he fits the bill at all. Routh I think deserves another shot at it. Hamm as a older superman....sure why not. he MAY be a good option. he looks the part, but can he pull it off as the character.
although, I always liked the idea of having a fresh face, or a unknown to portray superman. If Routh isn't offered the role, I think that should be the way to go. It makes it easier to believe in the character when it is someone that we can't think of from another previous role. The documentary "look up in the sky" described it best, if you were to have someone like Robert Redford play superman, then people would see just that, Robert Redford acting as superman. When we all just want to see Superman. It was the reasoning for having Christopher Reeves AND Brandon Routh play Superman, they were reletively unknown, fresh faces so that you wouldn't think of the actor while watching the movie, you would just think about the character. it makes it more believable..
The only problem with that route is that the actor is generally typecast as the character, it makes it very difficult for them to get away from the role, and move on when they need to. lets face it, it is unfair.

Jon Hamm is gonna be 40 in a few months. He won't work as Superman. Except, as some people have mentioned, as a Kingdom Come version. And as a cool bonus with that, they could get Michael Keaton in it, and we could have a decent live action Batman again for the first time since 1992.
Ryden
Ryden - 11/11/2010, 6:52 PM
I can't believe some of you are actually suggesting Welling over Hamm! You people are insane. Welling can't ACT! And Hamm looks far mor elike Superman than Welling does. Superman has always been a mature character, so casting a guy who is 39 isn't such a big deal. I mean look at Iron Man, RDJ will be 50 by the time IM3 comes out. But no-one complains, because he's PERFECT for the role. Hamm would make an excellent Superman.
theangrytroll
theangrytroll - 11/11/2010, 7:09 PM
I can't believe some people are suggesting Welling over a department store mannequin.

Hamm also broke his hand and separated his shoulder on the same stunt. (One in rehearsal, one during filming, for all the folks out there who would nitpick that.) ONE stunt. Superman will have a LOT more than that. I LIKE Hamm - he's funny and a good actor, but he's not a good fit for Superman.

The reason no one complains about Robert Downey Jr. is because out of the armor, all he does is drink, talk and crack jokes. All the action scenes, he's CGI. Try to CG Superman completely every time he's on screen and NOBODY on this site will like it. Unless of course, they decide to go with some of those utterly ridiculous redesigns for the costume that are floating around, in which case it doesn't matter who is cast because the movie will suck ass anyway.

As for Tom Welling, Abe Vigoda would make a more convincing Superman.
Ryden
Ryden - 11/11/2010, 7:20 PM
@theangrytroll- But Hamm is still in excellent shape, 39 isn't old....it's just older. The Alex Ross Superman has always looked at LEAST 40. They wouldn't need to CGI Hamm in the costume, but for action scenes, yeah of course it's going to be CGI....just like in Returns. Otherwise it's gonna look odd.
theangrytroll
theangrytroll - 11/11/2010, 7:34 PM
@Ryden - If they do three movies, Hamm will be 50 when they do the last one. That's why the smart money casts someone in their mid to late 20's for the role, like Chris Reeve, (no "s" at the end of his name,) was, so they can do a few movies without looking noticeably older. And no, I'm not advocating either Welling OR Routh. Even though I did like Routh in Superman Returns. I have no problem with, and would like to see, someone new in the role. And I'm not putting Hamm down either. As I said, I like the guy in most of what I've seen him in. But unless they're doing Kingdom Come, I don't wanna see a 50-year old Superman. And again, if they DO do a Kingdom Come movie, then I'm on the Hamm bandwagon 100%, along with Keaton for Batman.

@Superguy 1591- I agree with you , and I consider myself a Welling fan. At least Welling has charm and charisma, whereas Routh just sort of... stands there, like Ken, Barbie's boyfriend.
