1. He screen-tested for James Bond role in Casino Royale – and was overlooked for the last Superman movie. The British-born actor was up for Bruce Wayne in 2005’s Batman Begins (Christian Bale got the part); lost out to Daniel Craig for the James Bond role in 2006’s Casino Royale and was overlooked in the 2006 Superman flick thanks to Brandon Routh. Empire magazine dubbed him the "most unlucky man in Hollywood."

2. He played opposite Jonathan Rhys Meyers in Showtime's The Tudors.
Though he mostly starred in low-profile films (direct-to-video Hellraiser: Hellworld being one of them), he eventually got his big break opposite Jonathan Rhys Meyers' Henry VIII - - in the Showtime series The Tudors.

3. He was eyed for Robert Pattinson's role in Twilight.
He reportedly was author Stephenie Meyer's top pick to play Edward Cullen. By the time shooting was to began, he was 25 - hardly resembling the part of a 17-year old. He downplayed rumors to MTV News: "I've heard this, but I haven't heard from Stephenie. I haven't spoken to her personally, and I haven't spoken to the producers."

Henry Cavill is a great pick. Can't wait until we get some more casting news or who will be the villain. :D

What a joke, he can't act, watch the Tudors........... he's a brit..(nothing against brits, however he shouldn't be playing a character of this magnitude which originated by a Canadian and was adopted as an American Icon).

I lost all faith in this movie once "birthright" was rumored to be the plot, i'm sorry its about time everyone let go of his origins and start telling stories of this character. The general public is not stupid and knows the history of Superman.

Poor choice, another 200 million gone done the tubes and nothing has started.

So so wrong.

@superman- Nope, Superman isn't an "American icon" he is a pop culture icon. The character is actually an alien from another planet therefore making any nationality on Earth acceptable as long as they look the part.

Superman83@ Also, Canada is British and America used to be British (But we kicked them out of the Empire 'cause they have strange methods of making tea, or something). But yeah, he's Kryptonian, doofus. And he was created by two young Jewish men. So they should really get a Jew to play him.
Jazzman@ Don't forget how they got a Calafornian to play a Cockney/Scouse icon in Constantine.

jazzman - 1/31/2011, 2:17 PM
@Shunt

u know the actor is going to have a American accent and the character is a alien who was just raised in America.

u making out that Superman is going to be raised in England with a British accent LOL.

@DukeAcureds2010

yeah Keanu Reeves did not even try to put on a British accent for Constantine at all. well the whole movie of Constantine was set in America instead of England.

what about Angelina Jolie playing Lara Croft in Tomb Raider.

I'm sooo pissed they couldn't find a Kryptonian to Play him! I mean Come On! Ugh!

I'm just kidding, great cast :D Looking forward to this movie.

Currently he is ripped! He needs about another 20-25 lbs of muscle and would be perfect.

Add 20 lbs to that chiseled physique and we have a worthy Supes body, though I would prefer a little taller I'm not going to cry over 2 inches.

He almosts SOUNDS!!! like an english routh...
hes too small

I'm totally content with this casting. He was up for the role in Ratner's Supes film. Glad to see him get a second shot. He looks just like Superman. This movie get's more and more interesting.

norrinradd85
norrinradd85 - 1/31/2011, 2:30 PM
While I don't want Lex as the main villian he should be in the movie to some capacity. I'd like to see Daniel Craig as Lex Luthor, Daniel Day- Lewis as Jor-El, Julianne Moore as Lara, Clint Eastwood as Pa Kent, and John Malkovich as Braniac.

Im not making nothing out of this.. I never said anything was wrong with having a british actor..

Im just stating that Superman is an American Icon to the people who are trying to say he's not.. its getting ridiculous trying to deny it... whether superman comes from Krypton or was created by non-americans.. what ever the case is.. the fact remains that even tho Superman protects the whole entire planet, he is still and american icon..
DukeAcureds
DukeAcureds - 1/31/2011, 2:36 PM
Shunt@ If America can accept an alien from another planet standing for "The American way", then they can accept a Brit in a cape with an American accent. Sure Supes stand for the American way, even though he's from somewhere else. And now Cavill stands for the American way, even though he's from somewhere else. In fact, that IS the American way, isn't it? Also, that newspaper photo looks cool. That's Routh's costume they've put on him. Does it say anything interesting inside?
Vital
Vital - 1/31/2011, 2:36 PM
Wasn't he the son in The Count of Monte Cristo? He was younger then if it's him. OMG I just looked it up haha, it IS him. He is also in Tristan & Isolde.
Vital
Vital - 1/31/2011, 2:42 PM
And to the angry people, he DOES look the part. You guys need to seriously get a grip on reality. Calm down, center your chi or whatever. Who do you want as a younger Superman? Shia? I don't get it. You see a guy who looks the part and you say he doesn't look the part lol. It's so dumb! The only person that looks like Superman that we know is Jon Hamm, who obviously isn't going to be Superman lol. I swear you people bitch to just bitch, it doesn't matter what the topic is. You either bitch about the actors or the editors. JUST SHUT UP ALREADY.
DukeAcureds
DukeAcureds - 1/31/2011, 2:44 PM
@Shunty
You're right, actually. Throughout history, the dominant cultures of civilizations have had there classic myths. America is the dominant culture of this civilization (following in the footsteps of Britain, Rome, Greece, Egypt, etc) and our classical mythology is Superheroes (not discrediting Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Alice, Oz, etc) and Superman is the central character of that mythology, so it's quite right that he represent the American ideal and culture in order to capture the essential zeitgiest of our era. Although, I don't know why he isn't in New York, because that is the true capital of the modern world and it's mythologies.

@Shunt

well Thor is a Scandinavian icon but his been played by a Australian.

Superman no matter what is been play by a British actor who is going to put on a American accent. he is just playing a comic book character.

if Captain America was played by a non-American i would not agree with the cast. like many other people has pointed out American actors has been playing British Icons or other International characters for years but them actors dont even try to do a good British accent.

jaysin420 - 1/31/2011, 2:56 PM
I haven't seen this guy in anything but it's impressive he was in the final running for Batman, James Bond and was already cast as Superman when McG was about to do it.

Those are some pretty big roles and it's not like he lost out to chumps. Bale and Craig are pretty great in those roles and they probably made the change to Routh when they made the movie a sequel since he looked and sounded a lot like Reeve.

blueorangeny - 1/31/2011, 2:57 PM
You know Supes is the only one I'll like to see being American. It's just the old American way. You won't see a Chinese James Bond right?

here's a funny line I saw in another site,

"Brit could play Spiderman, an Aussie could play Thor, a Canadian could play The Green Lantern and Deadpool,"

Where the [frick] are the Americans lol

@ DukeAcureds2010.. Nah, i didnt buy the paper so i dont know what the article said.. I just saw the cover on the stand so when i came on here, i decided to post the picture just to show that Superman News is Big News.. Especially if it makes it to the front page of a New York Paper..

anyways.. Im not one Bit upset that a Brit is playing Superman,, Sh'it, why would I be mad at that when My favorite Superhero is being played by a Brit in Christian Bale.. I love Bale as Batman..

The only thing I find dissapointing in this Cavill guy is his height.. I just dont like the thought a 6 foot 1 Superman.. I think the Ideal Height for Superman should actually be 6'5... Superman should be a tall man.. other then that,, I just hope this guy plays a great part.. thats what counts the most..
jazzman
jazzman - 1/31/2011, 3:22 PM
@Shunt

anyway remember Hollywood also casted British actor to be villains in movie.

6 foot 1 is not short. but u they will use camera tricks or shoe lift like what they did for RDJ when he play Tony Stark.
