Yesterday CBM editor Ed Gross posted a pre-"Finale" love letter to Superman and Smallville, and today he posted his overvieew feelings about the series finale.

Admittedly this is not a well-crafted review, but, intead, are my quick impressions about the episode shortly after it finished airing.

The stuff between Lois & Clark and their relationship - awesome and part of the show I'm really going to miss. They should definitely do a new verson of Lois & Clark with these two in the leads.

Emotional sequences between Clark and Martha, and Clark and Jonathan -- great. Emotionally, the episodes hit on a number of levels.

Oliver as Green Arrow (cool); Oliver as Green Arrow managing to take down Darkseid's minions with a trio of arrows... not so much. If he could have done that all along, why didn't he?

10 seconds of a physical Darkseid - rip-off. An entire season builds up to this and instead of Darkseid (beyond a few seconds) we get a Lionel-possessed by Darkseid who looks fairly ridiculous.

Return of Lex: Very cool to see them together again, but way too frickin' rushed. Nice that Lex sets ground rules of who's the hero and who's the villain and why they need each other. But with Lex missing for three years, that's all we get? If Rosenbaum was going to come back, why couldn't there be more depth to the scene and why couldn't schedules be worked out to give us more than a single scene between them?

Tess taken out by Lex -- pretty cool, but the resolution fo the scene -- and the way Lex forgets everything he's known (including about Clark) -- kind of dopey.

Clark flying briefly before taking out Darkseid possessed Lionel with one punch, awesome (though he disposed of Darkseid even faster than he disposed of Doomsday)

Clark in the fortress, being told by Jor-El how proud of him he is, but that he should never forget what he learned in Smallville, awesome. Made even more so when Jonathan symbolically hands Clark the Superman uniform.

Clark flying out of the fortress putting on the uniform, cool, except we don't get to see much more than a few flashes of blue and red.

Rescue of Air Force One as Superman, pretty cool. Clark looks in window at Lois and we see the yellow S on the back of the cape VERY cool. Unfortunately rest of bits of seeing him by the plane are CG. Nice work, but not really satisfying.

Earth's only hope, the one who can restore faith to humanity, flies by in a blur and PUSHES Apokalips away. He pushes it! At least Brandon Routh busted his ass as Superman getting rid of that crystal continent, but this Superman gives it a shove and it goes sailing away.

With Apokalips sent away, everybody's Omega symbols are destroyed. Much applause for the hero that they and we and they didn't get to see. For a guy who's supposed to inspire hope, we don't even get to see him there, floating perhaps, arms folded across his chest, for the people to behold.

Flash forward to the future (which is how episode begins): Chloe finishes reading a Smallville comic to her and Oliver's son. Cool -- but isn't Clark gonna be pissed that someone has published a comic revealing EVERYTHING?

Still in the future, On TV Lex is "president elect" (pretty good for a guy who's memory was wiped). Clark and Lois and flirting, still haven't gotten married (came close in the episode -- a scene during which Clark manages to save Oliver from his darkness, which was cool). Announcement of bomb in a skysraper. John Williams' theme cues up, Clark runs to the roof, opens his shirt to reveal the blue shirt and red S, runs towards the camera and we are outta here.

Considering all the filler of this season, there was no reason that so much had to be rushed the way it is in this episode. And why couldn't we have gotten a REAL shot of Tom Welling dressed in the Superman outfit? Why did every full body shot have to be CG and from a distance? After 10 years, and considering the suggestion was that he was in the costume anyway, why couldn't the fans have truly been given what they've waited so long to see? Pretty much everyone knew that it would be the final seconds of the final episode, but why did it have to be a cheat? And it was most definitely a cheat.

Okay, I'm done bitching. Please go back and read my piece from yesterday where I'm looking at Smallville far more fondly. Just click on the Voices From Krypton logo at the top of this page.

And now a shameless self plug: Below is the latest installment of the CBM exclusive Fleischer comic strip. I would like to point out that Fleischer does NOT have a problem appearing in public in his costume, and I think he should be applauded for it.

I've not watched the whole episode just yet, but did see the last 20 minutes last night. It was an underwhelming, pathetic ending to a show that will be remembered as doing more things wrong than right. I'm not sure whether the lack of a full shot of Clark in the suit was down to Welling, Warner Bros. or the CW, but it was a mistake. After 10 years, it wad basically a slap in the face to fans, and I for one am now glad this show will no longer be around to do any more damage to the character.
A7 - 5/14/2011, 5:25 AM
not much of an ending - this whole last seasoned seemed like they tried to cram too much into it and didnt even end as triumphantly as a superman show should.
JoshWilding - 5/14/2011, 5:25 AM
Oh, and teabag was right. Smallville sucks sucked.
WaylonJones - 5/14/2011, 5:33 AM
Ed @ your right I was trying to find the right word for the Clark/Lex thing and you hit it, it was rushed. Another bitch I have is that I am 99% sure they never called him Superman
megabatfan - 5/14/2011, 5:40 AM
I was unhappy about the flashes of Superman we got. probably done in CGI perhaps...The best moment for me was when Johnathan presented the suit to Clark. Still pretty much in the same light of most Smallville episodes...meh!
YourMomNaked - 5/14/2011, 5:43 AM
I was more than satisfied by the Smallville finale! I didn't find it rush at all. The pacing of the 1st hr was well done, in fact. The 2nd half happened in "real time." The Green Arrow tear was cheesy, but I have absolutely no complaints. In regards to the CGI suit and flight, what about Thor? There you have a multi-million dollar blockbuster utilizing the same type of CGI long distance shots and every review I read included the word EPIC. This was an EPIC finale ;D BTW, the acting was great, too.

Super Epic or Superfail?
MisterJay - 5/14/2011, 5:53 AM
@waylonjones ...i was thinking the same thing about the name...but...i remember is the daily planet who call him superman...and thats after a few saves and heroic acts.....

i was pissed yesterday with the finale....but ...they give me more than i was expeting....i mean.... my idea of the finale was the few 5 seconds...of
superman...music and open the shirt...show the s... (wich they did) ...but they give like 6 minutes of superman.... no one was expecting that... so...now i think about it...was a good finale... smallville R.i.p....

one more thing....can someone explain me how superman has his secret identity if every fool can buy his secret origin history ...for how...99c x_x ....
Deadshot - 5/14/2011, 5:59 AM
Agreed with everything Ed said, the distant shots of a computer animated image of Welling is a massive spit in every single fans face who have waited to see him in the suit for 10 years. I mean all we wanted was to see a man wear a costume? Is that so hard to accomplish.
ar8898 - 5/14/2011, 6:09 AM
I wish that I could have written that finale!!!
JoshWilding - 5/14/2011, 6:20 AM
Oops, my bad tea...just changed it! Well, you're BOTH right regardless. :)
MetropolisMarvel - 5/14/2011, 6:20 AM
Lex did not have to lose his memory. He is far more powerful, and more of a threat to Clark, remembering everything.
MGS - 5/14/2011, 6:23 AM
So typical of Smallville... They tease and tease and when the big payoff comes, it's half ass. My expectations were low so I wasn't surprised.
EdGross - 5/14/2011, 6:38 AM
marcolanni, my apologies for using too many words. Next time I'll go with, "Characters good. Darkseid poor. CG Superman bad."
ninjahulk - 5/14/2011, 6:40 AM
like ed say for ten yrs of a the making give us something could been epic and they didnt show it. it really ending as clark kent still ant the the hero to become superman and in fact they didnt even acknowledgement that he was superman of even say his name it was crap i like clark kent but was ten yrs for nothing for fan and non-fan had wanted to see tom welling being superman that what the finale was all about and they didnt do so how do we known how he got his name and the world known him and i known eipsode the same ending of the frutre that he superman they should did a bigger ending then that and i was hype to finally see darksid true froum and the show us that that was done deal also the show was all about darksid(lex even say it out his mouth that clark was the one to save the world)so it should been a show down between does two that the way to go out for a ten year run.
JM4Superman - 5/14/2011, 6:50 AM
This article read my mind
Fortress - 5/14/2011, 6:53 AM
IM VERY DISAPPOINTED THEY DIDNT SHOW HIM IN THE FULL SUIT, AND THEY DIDNT EVEN CALL HIM SUPERMAN!!!!! PATHETIC!!!

THEY HAVE CHEATED ALL THE SUPERMAN FANS OUT THERE AND ALL THE PEOPLE WHO STUCK BY SMALLVILLE FOR 10 YEARS!

HOPEFULLY HENRY CAVILL/ZACK SNYDER WILL SHOW HOW ITS DONE!

P.S, C.G.I SUCKS BIG TIME!

GREAT ARTICAL ED! ;)
DEATHbyEXILE - 5/14/2011, 6:55 AM
My frustration with the finale...
Darkknight23 - 5/14/2011, 7:03 AM
Superman the Animated Series had a better Darkseid episode. Plus Darkseid was abigger let down than Galactus in FF ROTSS. I was disappointed
marvel72 - 5/14/2011, 7:09 AM
here is a quicker reveiw - shit!
boredsox78 - 5/14/2011, 7:10 AM
@marcolanni

Poor baby, did Ed make you read too much? are you incapable of reading several lines of his thoughts on Smallville? You're the dumbass who clicked the link, if you had issues with it, or Ed, then don't read his stuff. He brings loads of exclusives to the site that you'll never be able to do so a good recommendation would be to shut the he'll up and stop wasting your time bitching. Nuff said

Great article Ed, I wish they could have given us more superman stuff as well, but as you stated in your other article: one chapter has ended and another will soon begin!
blueorangeny - 5/14/2011, 7:17 AM
Ok it's a day after let's let it rest. The haters and the fans the complaining and talking smack about isn't going to change anything. Also let's stop calling for Synder to save and show us how it's done, you're comparing apples to oranges. Synder is getting freedom to do what ever and a 200 million budget so if you are trying to compare the 2 then you truly aren't smart. What you should do is compare smallville with Lois & Clark.

ED - Great follow up

Supersayianfan - Yes the writing had it moments where it sucked balls but there were some flashes where it was great. I truly love the Kent moments, it must of been hard to finish those scenes. A lot of emotions behind it when filming them I bet, you can truly see how 10 years have passed and aged. The fortress moments with JorEL and Kalel were dope as well. The scenes with MR were dope, it had its moments I can't front. Also it would have dope if when Lionel (darkseid) would have shot Omega Beams rather then throwing him, I would have accepted that part.

But with that said I would have been content, we all would have been content if the writes avoided the CGI suit and far shots.

Again I know it had nothing to do it being the choice of TW. It was the suits at the studios, WB. They forced the hand on producers on what to do and what not. It makes sense, it wouldn't make sense after 10 years to [frick]ing cock tease us the way they did. I doubt the writers and producers are that stupid.

It is unfortunate because if they have showed him full fledged then the last 10 minutes would have been worth the wait of 10 years. I guess this is my short review in some way.

Well it's over and done for us DC fans we have dc animations coming up, GL, and 2012. In the meantime we can squeeze in some additional superhero fix with Marvels contributions.
blueorangeny - 5/14/2011, 7:21 AM
@marcolanni - Go shit in your hand money, you seem like you'll enjoy it a lot more you little punk.

Respect and don't just comment talking shit especially when someone is only trying to contribute to the site. Here's the great thing about the site, you not forced to read stuff you not interested about. And if you feel you can do better then why not contribute yourself any articles.
Apokolips92 - 5/14/2011, 7:50 AM
What the [frick] did ninjahulk say :/
EdGross - 5/14/2011, 7:58 AM
demonhunter, time and budget restraints don't really apply here. They had the entire season to prepare for this episode -- and they dropped the ball. Besides, having him run up the stairs to the rooftop and emerge there as Superman would have cost them NOTHING and, with the John Williams theme playing, could have been infinitely more satisfying.

And, teabag, you're absolutely right: we never see him in the costume; every single shot is a trick to ALLUDE to the costume but never actually show him in it.

From the very beginning Tom Welling has drawn the distinction between Clark Kent and Superman. It's in his contract that he wouldn't appear in costume and, in fact, back in 2006 he refused to participate in the documentary covering the history of Superman. I simply cannot understand why he is making this distinction. The dude was playing Superman and why a crumb couldn't be thrown to the fans who have stayed with the show for 10 years is beyond me.

My alter ego Media Geek actually dealt with this years ago in a court of law:

Spock - 5/14/2011, 8:04 AM
Wow I must say iam not that satisfied how it ended. Thou Darkside was better than Galacutus in FF. Overall I'll give it a C=++ RATING.
ClarkFarley2012 - 5/14/2011, 8:09 AM
Great article Ed. You were reading my mind. I'm still fuming over the show. I'm wondering if it was a legal issue with him wearing the suit, or they don't want to confuse him with Henry Cavil when he suits up.

Well the show is over now, now let's see what Zack has for us.
TheDorkKnight - 5/14/2011, 8:11 AM
@Apokolips92 hahahaha i dont know.. dudes comment is epic fail. nice try tho ninjahulk.
Spidersocks - 5/14/2011, 8:16 AM
Joined the site so I can post my thoughts on the finale as well, always used to read posts but was always a bit too lazy to join. I enjoyed some scenes in the finale but was disappointed with the rest, I've been watching Smallville for its entire 10 year run, tuned in the very first day and last so you can say I'm a fan but with this finale I honestly felt robbed.

Smallville has a tradition of having a lame finale and premiere for each Season but I watched it still because it was Clark's story that mattered to me and waiting for him to fly and throw on the suit. Just a few seconds of a full close up shot of him in the suit would've had me smiling and happy watching the credits roll for the last time... that didn't happen. They could've had the crappiest CGI or a cheap $100 suit, I would've been satisfied. I felt like they played me for 10 years, in my country we call that "Thief Head."

I'm not gonna complain and get annoyed over it because Clarks story of growing up helped grow me into the man I am today because my parents were never there for me or believed in me, so Jonathan and Martha stood out and were my favorite characters, so I'd thank the cast and producers from the bottom of my heart for this series. As Jonathan said "Always hold on to Smallville"... but they could've at least ended it how everyone wanted, Welling in a full close up shot with the suit on, him flicking the planet away with his finger would not have mattered because its CW and their traditions of "wtf just happened?".... The only scene that will stay with me forever from that entire episode was seeing Jonathan, Martha and Clark hugging each other in the barn while its shaking and Apokolips is turning the sky red in the background..
eatmyhit - 5/14/2011, 8:57 AM
Long time stalker first time poster! After ten years spent watching this show to get only a few cgi views of him finally wearing the suit is feels like nothing more than a big "up yours" to the fans.
blueorangeny - 5/14/2011, 9:00 AM
Ed - is it fact that he declined to participate in 2006?

I still say it's wb and producers holding back the show for not allowing
Kishin - 5/14/2011, 9:05 AM
I just uploaded the final 10 minutes of the finale to YouTube. If you want to watch it, do it soon, before it's taken down!

Ah, Marcolanni... it's been a while since you've been here under one of your many names. Now your whole tedious nonsense begins anew as does your unhealthy obsession with me.

marcolanni... have fun; get your rocks off.

Thanks @ Teabag... Imma comment more since I've signed up, lol. I always get my daily laughs off the pics you post and grifs comments
JoshWilding - 5/14/2011, 9:39 AM
Just watched the whole 80 minute finale. As a whole, it was pretty average. They really screwed up with the lack of a real shot of Tom Welling in the costume and the decision to wipe Lex's memory makes no sense in the grand scheme of things. There were too many plot holes and a thousand better directions this finale (and season) could have gone in. There were some redeeming qualities, but as with most of Smallville over the years, it was a badly written mess.

I loved the first few seasons for the most part and the show has had some great episodes even in the last few bad seasons. However, Smallville has never been a great show, so I'm not surprised with the lack of a great ending. It's just a real shame they [frick]ed things up so badly in terms of putting Welling in the suit and I'd love to know the reasons behind that. Either way, I think this show may just prove that superheroes have no place on TV...at least not in the hands of the CW.
whatshisnameMD - 5/14/2011, 9:58 AM
I thought it was great but nothing ever satisfies people on this site.
Talontd - 5/14/2011, 10:02 AM
@EdGross

Ya know, all they had to do was - After Clark pushes the planet of Apokalips away have him come back down, hover over the throngs of people in the street with his arms folded over his chest, raise his right hand over his head, and fly away.

That's it! I would have been completely satisfied with the series. You know I (like you) have been a long time advocate of the show, and while I don't think the finale was terrible, it wasn't great.......which is what we as fans deserved.

I kinda think not seeing Tom in a full shot of the suit was HIS fault. He should've gotten in shape man.I really have a feeling we didn't get that shot because he didn't look good in it.

Whatever, it is what it is. Just sad to see it go out like that.

P.S.- C'mon man, you should know better than to feed the trolls ;)
valeriesghost - 5/14/2011, 10:12 AM
@waylon i believe at the end Chloe says sothing along the lines of " and thats the day he became SUperman", that's not an exact quote, but i'm pretty sure its close.

@talontd I thought the same thing, that Welling wasn't in good enough shape for the suit, thats why he wasn't wearing it. [frick]er.

Maybe we'll get lucky and he'll be supes for holloween and we'll finally get what we want :)
hatrick3 - 5/14/2011, 10:25 AM
Back in '89, with the Burton film coming out, Adam West was told that, legally he could no longer wear the batsuit in public. Wonder if something similiar is at play here. No real shots of Welling as Supes. He's never even called Superman.
