From the start, fans really didn't want to see a live-action adaptation/remake of the popular manga comic and animated film Akira, which was created and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo. Critically acclaimed anime was released in 1988. Warner Bros. has been trying to move forward with the live-action movie for a long time, but there was always something in the way. After director Albert Hughes left the project, everyone thought that might be the end of it. But studio soon found the replacement, director Jaume Collet-Serra. Since then, we haven't heard much about the film. Well, it seems that they will make a final decision sometime next week, according to Variety's Showblitz:

"WB's seems closer to making a decision on whether to give the film a greenlight after the filmmakers gave a presentation on Wednesday to Warner execs that included a revised budget. Sources say most people are confident execs will be happy with the new budget...but you never know in this town. Be prepared for some kind of decision sometime next week."

I dont have a problem with a live action akira, it's the casting choices and American setting that I have a problem with.

Akira is the Watchmen of Manga. If they do not do it right, there is no point doing it at all. A remake of the anime would be pointless. But a trilogy based on the epic Manga would be [frick]ing awesome! That NEEDS to be done. But done right. Not like all the bullshit Hollywood ideas that we've heard already. don't change it. i really ain't broke. it's a [frick]ing masterpiece and it's culturely iconic and generation defining. It's one of the only fictitious modern epics that I can think of that has an almost religious fervor attached to it. With Star Wars and Lord of the Rings being the others.
The power of Akira exists within everyone. Even you.

I never got into Akira no matter how hard I tried. It never did it for me,but what you said is spot on. Hollyweird is just gonna [frick] it all up and that sucks for all the Akira fans out there. I wouldn't be surprised if they give it the transformers treatment... mindless action and no heart.

That's exactly what's happening. And you're first comment is what any WB exec should pay attention to. No Wonder Woman film yet? Really? After 6 Superman films and 7 Batman films?
Out of curiousity, Ghostfire, have you ever started the Manga of Akira? Because I know a lot of people who just can't get into the anime at all. The Anime makes a lot more sense, when you've read the Manga.

I've never read Akira but from what I've heard, it's an amazing Manga and Anime. I just don't know why so many people are angry at the American setting and casting American actors for the roles. Mainstream audiences aren't going to be interested in seeing a subtitled foreign film with actors that they're unfamiliar with. Sure the narrow-minded fans would want to see it, but would that make Warner Bros. any money? What I really care about is story and acting. I don't care if it takes place in America because I'm open minded. Who cares if they cast an American actor as Kaneda and Shima? In truth, the two actors from the names that were rumored who I think would be great for the roles are Zac Efron and Andrew Garfield respectively.

A long time ago.. i was in elementary school when i first heard of it. I've seen the anime and its good and read the manga several times when I got older and still didn't do it for me. Don't get me wrong its good just not my taste.

Very true. Just to be on the safe side, I think you're right on the whole American angle. Who wants to see a bunch of Japs, right? Even if they spoke English, like foriegn language people do in Hollywood films, they're aren't any big name (and expensive) stars from Japan.

@DukeAcureds Even though I have Asperger's Disorder, I can tell even through my laptop that your being sarcastic. I was not saying that there shouldn't be any Japanese actors, it's just so hard to find any. Most of the Asian actors there are in Cinema today are of either Chinese or Korean descent. Films like these should be multicultural, especially considering that the art itself does not explicitly say that the characters are Japanese or even Asian for that matter. There are many people in the world who are of a specific ethnic background and have names that originate from another. My real name is of Hebrew origin but I am really of European, African, and Native American descent. I wouldn't mind if they had any Asian actors in roles in the film, but I still stand by my statement when I said that I would like Zac Efron and Andrew Garfield as Kaneda and Shima respectively.

@jazzman Yes, I am serious. Forget about the High School Musical trilogy and instead focus on the other films that Efron has done. He is a very good actor who I know would take a role like this seriously. And with Andrew Garfield, he won 8 awards in his short acting career and he's playing the role of one of my all-time favorite comic book heroes, Spider-Man.

@ShugarYumYum Wanting an adaptation that stays true to the source material doesn't mean that you have to put it in another language with bad dubbing and actors that people aren't familiar with. The kind of people your describing when you say "slobbering masses who scratch their head at the "funny talking slanted-eye people"" are dumb, racist, and conservative Republicans who hate foreign countries and their people. I'm not one of them and eighty percent of the "mainstream" audience isn't either. "The Dark Knight" got much praise and it was intended for the mainstream audience but it still stayed true to the source material.

@jazzman Okay, I wouldn't mind bringing in some Asian-American actors and actresses, but do understand that Asian-American actors and actresses are rare and trying to get a whole cast of Asian-Americans would be an impossible feat.

@jazzman I said "would be an impossible feat" not "is an impossible feat". There still lies the fear that most moviegoers wouldn't be familiar with almost an entire cast of unknowns. Putting in well known actors like say Morgan Freeman would seal the deal for this movie.

i would definetly like to see a live action akira movie,but not with the changes hollywood want to make to the story.

japanese cast & crew with a hollywood size budget,you can count me in.

@marvel72 Like I said before, trying to get an entire cast of Japanese-Americans would be a nearly impossible feat. Another thing is that not all of the characters have to be Japanese. Just because the characters names are of Japanese origin doesn't necessarily mean that the character has to be a Japanese character that must be played by a Japanese actor. My name is of Hebrew origin yet I am of European, African, and Native American descent.
