With the release of Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class on DVD and Blu-Ray in UK, Jason Flemyng (Azazel) talked to Digital Spy about the upcoming sequel, which according to him, is being written right now. More below...

"There was a benchmark that they had to hit box office-wise before they could start writing the next one, which they've started. We'll just see how the DVD goes and then fingers crossed I'll be bright red again by next summer."

Considering that the DVD and Blu-Ray sale is doing good, I think we can expect some official announcment soon.

X-MEN: FIRST CLASS unveils the epic beginning of the X-Men saga – and a secret history of the Cold War and our world at the brink of nuclear Armageddon. As the first class discovers, harnesses, and comes to terms with their formidable powers, alliances are formed that will shape the eternal war between the heroes and villains of the X-Men universe.

Great news!

jimoakley666 - 11/3/2011, 12:55 PM
^^^Ha, brilliant
PaulRom - 11/3/2011, 12:55 PM
Really can't wait for the sequel, hope they can squeeze it in for 2013.

tomasocelot - 11/3/2011, 1:01 PM
can we have the original five now please. Ill even let them throw in a logan just to keep the fan boys happy. lets just get down to basics
Frogman - 11/3/2011, 1:04 PM
Been out in the UK four days now, picked up my copy, still just as good as I remember it to be. Best CBM of the year. Original five not needed as proved by First Class and the X2, best X films and neither include the original five.
Theodora - 11/3/2011, 1:06 PM
Yes, we need the original five.

Karen Gillian for Jean Grey!

The writers have had their fun picking what characters they want, now get back to the comic.

MarkJulian - 11/3/2011, 1:09 PM
Old news but good news nonetheless.
nuck82 - 11/3/2011, 1:09 PM
no catwoman

the next jean grey
Frogman - 11/3/2011, 1:12 PM
you guys realise Jean will be around 10 or in her early teens unless they make the sequel a lot nearer to the first film.
comicoverlord - 11/3/2011, 1:17 PM
If they go the 70's route, they would be fools to waste Dazzler and Thunderbird. Perfect characters for the era.
ACira - 11/3/2011, 1:18 PM
Bought the blu-ray today, watched it for the second time, and loved it just as much as the first time.
BmanHall - 11/3/2011, 1:20 PM
Overrated movie. I love how people claim to be comic book fans and rave about source material then praise something that strays away from it. It always starts with some minor changes. Then they change more to makes sense out of the stuff they changed. Next thing you know, we end up with another shit infested abomination that was X3.

I, on the other hand, will sit back and laugh at everyone who buys into the FOX bandwagon just waiting for the day Marvel retrieves the rights to the franchise. Until then, I'll be watching these online like I have since X3.
nuck82 - 11/3/2011, 1:20 PM
frogman, um no she will not be 10 if there going to use the o.g. 5 they will at lest be in there late teens like they were in the comic when they started
ACira - 11/3/2011, 1:26 PM
@Arminies I thought they all went into hiding about four and a half months ago. I mean don't get me wrong, Green Lantern was very close to being the Star Wars of CBMs. Well, close to being the Phantom Menace of CBMs anyway...

@Badbear a movie that should have worked (Green Lantern) bombed critically and commercially. A movie that should have failed (X-Men First Class) was a critical and commercial success. Guess which one's getting a sequel?

ACira - 11/3/2011, 1:27 PM
@Badbear ignore that. I dont know you very well either.
ACira - 11/3/2011, 1:31 PM
@MarvelWeiner you have a First Class avatar?! Colour me confused.
jjmeylar - 11/3/2011, 1:33 PM
I hope that they go with the idea of Magneto curving the bullet to kill JFK. I mean: if "Watchmen" can get away with their little JFK kill clip, then they can do it too.
Sanderman - 11/3/2011, 1:36 PM
This guy talked too much in the first one. Maybe if they cut down his lines writing the 2nd one will go faster....lol
Kayo - 11/3/2011, 1:37 PM
i would love to see Sentinels or Mister Sinister or Apocalypse on the next one.
Theodora - 11/3/2011, 1:40 PM
@nuck82 Bryce is a very good choice!
plasticman - 11/3/2011, 1:43 PM
If his part is anything like the previous film he should have his lines memorized already!
monstermaniac - 11/3/2011, 1:44 PM
A sequel to this overrated piece of shit? Great.....
MarkJulian - 11/3/2011, 1:46 PM
Boy oh boy , how times change. I remember everyone and their mom +grandma hating this movie from concept up until the first review. Ha!
ACira - 11/3/2011, 1:48 PM
@MarvelWeiner oh cool, what did I win? Is the prize a helmet like yours? We could be helmet buddies, with matching helmets and whatnot! Hey helmet buddy! Thanks for the helmet!
DarthTesla - 11/3/2011, 1:50 PM
Awesome news. First Class was fantastic.

It's too bad they used (misused) Warren in X3, otherwise I would say they should bring in the Original 5.
spiderneil - 11/3/2011, 1:54 PM
X-FC was the best superhero this year and by some distance
nuck82 - 11/3/2011, 1:54 PM
@GraphicCity i still hate it if they dont use the o.g. 5, just sayin
spiderneil - 11/3/2011, 1:58 PM
@ nuck82 that would have been perfect but they wanted to tie this movie to the previous trilogy so scott, jean, angel and ice wouldn't have been born yet.
BmanHall - 11/3/2011, 1:59 PM
Judging from the number of ignorant FOX lovers in here, we won't be seeing rights return to Marvel any time soon.

But hey, maybe I'm wrong. I'm sure they won't make the same mistake like X-Men 3...

or X-Men Origins: Wolverine...

or Fantastic 4...

or Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer...

or Daredevil...

Yeah, but I'm sure they'll get it right this time! =|
spiderneil - 11/3/2011, 2:01 PM
yeah but we're not talking about FF or X3 or daredevil.
I don't get the fox hate. fox made rise of the plaent of tha apes and X:FC and both of those movies are my favortie movies of the year.
BmanHall - 11/3/2011, 2:02 PM
or Elektra...
BmanHall - 11/3/2011, 2:03 PM
@ spiderneil: Nobody is saying FOX makes shit movies. They just make shit comic book movies.
BooYah - 11/3/2011, 2:03 PM
Out of everyone in the movie the guy with the least lines is the one to confirm the sequel.

Does that seem funny to anyone else?
spiderneil - 11/3/2011, 2:08 PM
@ bmahall

X1, X2, X:FC

terrific superhero movies. I agree that everything else they've done with superheroes sucks. but they rebooted (or prequeled) x-men and that was great so who is to say they haen't learn't their mistakes with daredevil and FF?
xinstituto - 11/3/2011, 2:10 PM
the origunal 5 would be a new continuity mistake.. coz they already told a diferent story in the trilogy, which must fit in it.
spiderneil - 11/3/2011, 2:11 PM
also, look at IM2, marvel are capable of dropping the ball as well as sony or fox.
MassExecutions - 11/3/2011, 2:17 PM
Can everyone agree to not care about continuity changing relative to the first three films? If we can agree on that, then I think we can REALLY get a good film. Who cares what age the real original five should be in the sequel base on the first three? Just make 'em teenagers and use them anyway!
spiderneil - 11/3/2011, 2:19 PM
@ massexecutions

this would confuse the heck out of the general audience
BmanHall - 11/3/2011, 2:20 PM
@ spiderneil: Had they learned their lesson, they wouldn't have changed the source material... again. I didn't put X-Men and X-Men 2 in my list because I would be crucified for doing so. However, I don't care for ANY of the X-Men movies made by FOX. They all digress from the source material and X-Men 3 is when we finally said, "Enough!"

In all honesty, I think X-Men: First Class was a great movie, but it was a very poor comic book movie. I'm sure a sequel will be decent as well. Mark my words, they WILL eventually give in to what the fans THINK they want. So FOX will change the story how they see fit to allow the money to flow in. We will be at X-Men 3 all over again.

I'm not a nice guy when I'm trying to prove a very obvious point. I will gladly be the one to say, "I told you so."
RoadDogXXIV - 11/3/2011, 2:21 PM
I'm a little indifferent to X-Men: First Class. James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence (I think she would've made a better Rogue had they rebooted the franchise and not cast her as Mystique, but it's a pipe dream now), Rose Byrne, and Kevin Bacon turned in incredibly strong performances. And I like the whole idea of setting the film during the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis. But the plot was weird, because there weren't any signs of serious mutant hatred that was being teased at, and various actions of some of the mutants - including Mystique - never made much sense.

Personally, I'd love to see X-Men 4 in the near future. Get everybody's ass back and do something like Days of Future Past or Age of Apocalypse. And how about let Marvel get the rights back, but let FOX continue with the franchise. Time to see Deadpool Reynolds fight with Taskmaster and Bullseye (I doubt Daredevil: Born Again is on the way, so Marvel is due to get the rights to Daredevil any day now), but Ryan Reynolds stays for now.

But if they do a sequel First Class, obviously we need Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Storm as the other first X-Men. And maybe throw more Brotherhood members like Toad and Sabretooth. I don't know a good early story to kick-start the franchise, so that's pretty much the end of my comments. :-P
ACira - 11/3/2011, 2:24 PM
@BmanHall "Yeah, but I'm sure they'll get it right this time! =|"
They got it right last time. The rights wont go back to Marvel any time soon, and Marvel really dont have the time or money to produce any X-Men films at the minute anyway. I think the best thing to wish for is some sort of co-distribution deal between FOX and Marvel, so the possibility of crossovers in the future is at least an option.
spiderneil - 11/3/2011, 2:26 PM
@ bmanhall

first and foremost I want a great movie and I want the 'essense' of the character to be there as well.

take the spider-man movies, okay spidey doesn't wise crack but the essense of the character (work problems, no money, has to pay his way, guilt ridden) is all there AND it's a good movie. I don't don't if he doesn't wide crack, doesn't have mech web shooters etc if I am entertained. if I want and exact copy of the comic I'll just read the comic.

movies like daredevil and FF suck because they are rubbish movies not because they stray from the source material. look how far nolan's movie stray from the source material and no one complains about that
nuck82 - 11/3/2011, 2:27 PM
mASS stop drinking the cool-aid please
MassExecutions - 11/3/2011, 2:32 PM
spiderneil - I really don't think the general audience is going to put enough though into it to care. But, if its really a concern, then throw some time travel/diminsional shift excuse in there (with cable) and move on.

nuck - I find the idea of taking drinking suggestions from you highly suspect.
Minghagz - 11/3/2011, 2:34 PM
@SillySteve181191
Hand the rights back!

I'm with you on that. I didn't really like any of the X-men movies. Some were mediocre and others I can't even stand to watch. Just leave X-men alone for a while and give it back to Marvel.
ACira - 11/3/2011, 2:37 PM
FOX should stick with producing good X films like First Class. They should give all the other rights back to Marvel, since Daredevil could potentially be done on a relatively low budget, while I think the F4 would tie in to the current MCU better than the X-Men; the X-Men is too big to fit into the MCU at the moment, they need to expand it slowly, not explode it and watch it all go down in flames.

@RoadDogXXIV I think the main reason there wasnt much mutant hate in the film was because this was back when no one knew they existed. I watched the film a couple hours ago and most of the humans instantly showed animosity towards people they found out were mutants. In fact, the whole thing with the missiles being launched at the island is due to government orders to kill the mutants, so it looks like it's being set up for a sequel. I mean X-Men (2000) started with mutantkind being public knowledge. First Class, logically, has set the film before mutants were known to exist or considered a real threat.

I also agree that the likes of Cyclops, Jean, Storm, and maybe even Angel (really, who gives a shit if it conflicts any more with X3?) should be brought into this film, since First Class ended with Prof. X having only 3 X-Men on his team, while Magneto had at least 5 followers in his brotherhood. And if they do bring in Sabretooth for the Brotherhood, I actually hope Liev Schreiber returns. X-Men Origins Wolverine was a huge let down but Schreiber owned the role of Victor Creed.
spiderneil - 11/3/2011, 2:39 PM
@ massexecutions

the general audiences' only exposure to the x-men is via the movies so if they saw a teenage jean and scott (for example) in the 60's they would be like, 'wait, weren't they in the previous movies as 20 somethings? how does THAT work?'

the only way to have the original five would hae been to completely reboot the franchise and fox weren't prepared to do that with their most successful superhero franchise.

we'll see how the general audience reacts to detail chances when the spider-man reboot hit's the big screen.
betcha you'll get a lot of this;
'wait, didn't he shoot webs out of his wrists?'
'I thought his uncle was dead'
DEADinthePOOL - 11/3/2011, 2:39 PM
I'm just hoping for more Beast action he is my favorite x-men original. And definitely more Magneto being the deranged psychopath that Fassbender played in First Class. Fassbender's performance as magneto made that movie so much better. I also want to see Professor X going bald or already completely bald and at the end of the movie Emma Frost joins the X-men and sets up the third which would hopefully bring us up to date/timeline of the first X-men.
MassExecutions - 11/3/2011, 2:42 PM
@spiderneil - Were there specific dates tied to the original movies? Or were they just supposed to be set in the year they came out? That's already 11 years back. The farther way we get the less relevant that is. I say, screw the risk with the general audience, and if you've got a great story with the original five, make that movie.
SugarYumYum - 11/3/2011, 2:48 PM
Just keep Vaughn on board and my ass will be planted in a theater seat opening weekend once again. Obviously continuity is NEVER going to happen with a FOX helmed X-and Vaughn is the only guy they've got that can work around the clusterf*cks and make an decent X-men film. He leaves and so does my interest in any future FOX X-men films.
