Everyone knew that The Avengers will be big at the box office. Well, almost everyone. But no one knew it would be this big. It's a monster going towards every single film for the last three weeks and crushing them with ease. Rival studios are going crazy because the Joss Whedon-directed film became a four-quadrant movie and it received a rare A+ CinemaScore. Men In Black 3 might take the #1 spot this weekend, but one thig is for sure: The Avengers will break $500M mark by Monday. Today, the film has officially topped Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, and became fourth highest-grossing film of all time in US.

Above is the updated list of records The Avengers currently holds, and it will probably break a couple of more. It will be interesting to see where will the film stop, but as of now, it has made $1,228,700,000 at the global box office.

Marvel Studios presents in association with Paramount Pictures “Marvel’s The Avengers”--the super hero team up of a lifetime, featuring iconic Marvel super heroes Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins.

Starring Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson, & directed by Joss Whedon from a screenplay by Joss Whedon, “Marvel’s The Avengers” is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” first published in 1963 and a comics institution ever since. Prepare yourself for an exciting event movie, packed with action and spectacular special effects, when “Marvel’s The Avengers” assemble on May 4, 2012. The film is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. In addition to "Marvel's The Avengers," Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including "Iron Man 3" on May 3, 2013!; and “Thor 2” on November 15, 2013.

OK so the Phantom Menace is that big in box office sales. That film took two precious hours of my life I'll never get back.
Anthrax - 5/25/2012, 4:25 PM
Aw Yeah
AvalonKnight - 5/25/2012, 4:29 PM
I personally think the box office success of the avengers is due to the gimmick of seeing all those heroes in one spot. An entertaining film no less. But I doubt the sequel will be as big of a success. But i think it will be a better movie.....with a story!
Joe6Pack74 - 5/25/2012, 4:29 PM
What are the other 3 films and what did they pull in?
JDUKE25 - 5/25/2012, 4:29 PM
If it's not the adjusted gross I could care less.
LoudNoises - 5/25/2012, 4:30 PM
I just had a thought. How cool would it have been if Drew Struzan did a movie poster for The Avengers! In his traditional Starwars style and layout. Goosebumps just thinking about it, lol.
TheGambitFreakIsBatmanOfCBM - 5/25/2012, 4:30 PM
I'm mathematically retarded, and I can't remember: Do they count DVD/Blu-Ray sales as apart of this? I don't believe so, but, What the [frick] do I know, I just sit in my room all day.

ScarSpeedster - 5/25/2012, 4:36 PM

legolad - 5/25/2012, 4:37 PM
HULK SMASH THE BOX OFFICE!!!

sexfoodcomics - 5/25/2012, 4:40 PM
@avalonknight. The story of the movies were the characters coming together. avengers is a sequel to all the other movies. It's not a stand alone movie.
marvel72 - 5/25/2012, 4:41 PM

LucasMend - 5/25/2012, 4:46 PM
Almost beating Harry Potter last movie on worldwide box office :)
TheHitchhikingGhost - 5/25/2012, 4:46 PM
@marvel72, at this rate bud, it's inevitable it will make 33 more million bucks following Memorial Day weekend and dethrone TDK from its current spot.
superotherside - 5/25/2012, 4:47 PM
Awesome. Needs to pass the Potter now. I know it probably won't but I kinda hope it passes Titanic and Avatar. Doubt that's possible for it though.
CaptainObvious - 5/25/2012, 4:48 PM
Except that it took Phantom Menace a re-release to get to that mark.

Thank God this happened.
heisei24 - 5/25/2012, 4:49 PM
AvalonKnight - 5/25/2012, 4:50 PM
@sexfoodcomics.I realize its a sequel itself. But it is essentially a stand alone story. Albeit a paper thin story but the avengers stands alone from the other films.
AvalonKnight - 5/25/2012, 4:52 PM
@steverogersson.....STFU! That's such a cop out way to deal the fact that we have different opinions. Plus i dont even like Nic Cage, johnny blaze or blazecage. So go suck a railroad spike.
SuspenseSmith - 5/25/2012, 4:53 PM
[frick] yeah!

Who's left?
SuspenseSmith - 5/25/2012, 4:54 PM
Memorial Day Weekend is its best chance to get any higher up the list. But eat that Lucas!
hawkeye1 - 5/25/2012, 4:57 PM

ShortRound - 5/25/2012, 5:02 PM
Don't you mean it beat Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope?

Unas - 5/25/2012, 5:03 PM
The Phantom Menace and Avengers? What's the difference???
PantherX - 5/25/2012, 5:05 PM
Well, how about that. TDK is next to beat domestically..
musicsuperhero1 - 5/25/2012, 5:11 PM
SuspenseSmith...i like your avatar picture. I've said a few times that I think Tom Hiddleston would make a great Joker in the rebooted series.
musicsuperhero1 - 5/25/2012, 5:14 PM
just a thought...if you want accurate numbers you have to look at the rankings based on adjusted prices. With the Avengers being in standard, 3d, and imax 3d...and those tickets being roughly $18 bucks...that changes everything. I LOVED the Avengers and i'm so happy its doing well...but you have to keep in mind (which it seems a lot of folks aren't) that you really need to look at the adjusted charts for accurate numbers.
BANE5000 - 5/25/2012, 5:17 PM
Ha, it took out the movie that had to be released twice to make more money
LAXtremest - 5/25/2012, 5:18 PM
Most of the people hating on this movie have something related to Batman in their username or avatar. Weird...
johnmarston - 5/25/2012, 5:20 PM
@legolad
captain americas helmet looks cooler in the GIF than it does in the movie
LAXtremest - 5/25/2012, 5:23 PM

legolad - 5/25/2012, 5:24 PM

@Boosted

Well you see son, Joss Whedon is a character development writer, so he has to show that Captain America, the Leader, is not invincible. This also goes for the scene where he gets thrown out a window by an explosion. But the underlying message here is that Captain America never gives up, no matter how many times he gets knocked down, he gets back up.

All time Box office (World)

1 Avatar
2 Titanic
3 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part
4 Marvel's The Avengers

Avengers will have Dark Knight beat in three weeks.

Dark Knight Rises is a non-issue due to lack of 3D

@IronMan53- I loved Warlock as a kid. To see him on the big screen would be EPIC.
