Well, here is a weird rumor, that it actually might be true. According to Sigourney Weaver (via Showbiz 411), director James Cameron is set to film not one, not two, but three sequels to his highest-grossing film of all time, Avatar. Released in 2009, the film became a worldwide hit, which of course means more sequels for the studio. Now, Cameron did say that he plans to dedicate all of his time to Avatar and Avatar only, which makes me think that this might happen. More below:

"Sigourney Weaver confirmed tonight that James Cameron is shooting “Avatar” 2, 3, and 4 all at the same time, all with her, and starting this fall. When “Political Animals” finishes shooting, see if you can follow Weaver’s schedule: she goes right into a new Christopher Durang play for a short run at Lincoln Center. Then she films “Avatar” 2, 3, and 4 with James Cameron. That’s right: they’re making three sequels to the blue 3D phenom all at the same time. Weaver says she has no idea how long it will take, or how it’s going to work. “I just show up,” she said."

For now, take it with a grain of salt, until we have some sort of confirmation. Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver will return for the upcoming sequel.

What?!?!? The neverending first one felt like 2, 3, 4 and 5...
Jolt17 - 6/26/2012, 6:28 AM
I found Avatar pretty impressive, but three sequels...really? I don't even think a sequel is necessary, as the story in the first movie has pretty much ended nicely. I'll wait and see, but there's a big chance people will already have enough by the time the fourth movie is released.
JamesClement - 6/26/2012, 6:30 AM
That would be an impressive feat.
golden123 - 6/26/2012, 6:31 AM
Well, I'll see "Avatar 2" on DVD. If it's good, I'll watch "Avatar 3" in theaters. If that is bad, I'll watch "Avatar 4" on DVD. If James Cameron makes three quality sequels, then I'll be really impressed. I thought Avatar was a good movie, but I didn't care enough to anticipate a sequel.
MadTitan - 6/26/2012, 6:31 AM
can't stand the first one, then this....

SuperSomething616 - 6/26/2012, 6:34 AM
WTF? Has he never heard of quality over quantity!!! This ain't lord of the rings cameron...behave yourself!!!
Batman27 - 6/26/2012, 6:34 AM
Great more Dances with Pocahontas! Cameron has the time for avatard but didn't have the time to finish Terminator.
ksommer - 6/26/2012, 6:36 AM
Holy Crap... Might be a little overkill.
marvel72 - 6/26/2012, 6:42 AM
i thought the first film was good, visually stunning.i thought it might get two sequels but three is awesome.

i bet james cameron ends up having the top five highest grossing films of all time.
jessepostal - 6/26/2012, 6:43 AM
i think he's just trying for the record for most movies filmed at once just so his name will be on another record
backup - 6/26/2012, 6:44 AM
I wonder if she is cloned back to life. Avatar: resurrection
MadTitan - 6/26/2012, 6:46 AM
@therealgoomba-

That was a horrible movie i hope he just makes one and that flops.

agreed!

NeoBaggins - 6/26/2012, 6:47 AM
Sounds stupid and greedy. Unless he is cooking up something mind-blowingly new, I can't see three more Avatar sequels of similar content as the first holding my attention.
thecap - 6/26/2012, 6:53 AM
if they all bomb he'll still be in profit from the 1st one
Godzillafart - 6/26/2012, 6:59 AM
Does anyone else remember the palpable feeling of "who gives a shit" when sitting down to Matrix 3? It was amazing that something went from really cool to really boring so quickly.

Cameron is overplaying his hand big time.
MitchConner - 6/26/2012, 6:59 AM
So if 2 sucks, then the studio gets to eat the costs of three films in the wrong direction and not just one because he's lazy? Got it.
Boyle360 - 6/26/2012, 7:08 AM
@mrTinman
What's with the "ermm"s?
dezdigi - 6/26/2012, 7:13 AM
I'll pass.
FilmsFan - 6/26/2012, 7:17 AM
Ya I think so too!!
Cameron thinks its STAR WARS or LOTR or some shit that people will see 3 Sequels!?!?!?
What?

I loved Avatar... But not for it's story!!
It was just to drive the Visuals & Action & all that impressive CGI PANDORA cameron created!

But 3 [frick]ing sequels!!
No!

& when he'll make them... That's even bigger of a problem with him: he's the LAZIEST DIRECTOR in Hollywood!
Look a Speilberg etc... they are as big as u & they care about their fans & make more films!!
Good films!!

Already Avatar 2 & 3 release is postponed to December 2015 & 2016!!
So adding 4th; when he'll release them 2020!!
He's sure that he'll live by that time!!
& what about story; ur gona carry on just like a money-hungry Dirctor!!
Please make 3 or 4; but focus on STORY; everyone can do Great Visual... if they got money!
For Story u need brain!!

Hopefully they turn out good--- Atleast!!
supersayen - 6/26/2012, 7:18 AM
Maybe they will take over earth.
MrsTonyStark0507 - 6/26/2012, 7:22 AM
What MadTitan (and Steve Carell) said... times a million!! HATED, HATED, HATED this, as PreacherFanatic put it, WORLD'S LONGEST PSA!! Go away Cameron, go away!!
Fogs - 6/26/2012, 7:22 AM
I really hope they're any good.

Cause the first, aside the CGI, just wasn't.
Fogs - 6/26/2012, 7:24 AM
@iLoveMarvelAndDC - I can say for myself: thought the story and the pacing pretty average.

And the hype was sooooo forced down our throat, as it was the next star wars / lord of the rings series.
whoelsebutkevin - 6/26/2012, 7:25 AM
@tinman

I grind my teeth every time I read your comments. Please form sentences, instead of dumb words that make no sense to your point.

Im for Sequels, they will look sick on Blu Ray especially since he's said the 2nd one will take place partially around the ocean. Which will interpret well on BluRay too.
DividedIStand80 - 6/26/2012, 7:25 AM
Does he really have 3 stories worth of movies to tell from this mediocre fantasy?

Team grif all the way; all day!
MrsTonyStark0507 - 6/26/2012, 7:26 AM
ILoveMarvelandDc - It was nothing more than an environmental PSA disguised in animated clothing. It just sucked. I turned it off half way through - well I think it was half way through, but not sure since it's like 9 HOURS long!
PirateOpossum - 6/26/2012, 7:28 AM
I wonder what Disney Animated movie he will rip off and claim to be his own for these 3.
MrsTonyStark0507 - 6/26/2012, 7:29 AM
Whoelsebutkevin - James Cameron do a movie about the ocean? I couldn't be more shocked if I woke up with my head sewn to the carpet. :/
Gigacrusher45 - 6/26/2012, 7:29 AM
Seriously??? He's already PLANNING on making a horrible and out of place fourth movie???

These people don't know how to plan movies. And the biggest problem is that he already lost half the audience who didn't like the first one and were let down by the over the top hype about it.

Best part is nobody, not even Cameron, has ANY idea what is going to happen in ANY of the sequel except " Oh I want to go under water in the next one".
Gigacrusher45 - 6/26/2012, 7:34 AM
The only possible way this can work out is if he already completed writing the next three movies and worked on them as long as he says he worked on the first one. That is the only acceptable way.

But even then... he says he worked on the first one for like 11 years, and it was just good. Not great... just good.

Works on three movies at the same time??? Not liking the odds of that.
CCWGGuy - 6/26/2012, 7:36 AM
I loved Avatar, but its been going on almost 3 years since AVATAR was released! Wasn't the Plan originally meant to released the sequel in 2013? Why why so long? If they dont shoot until this fall where does that leave us, a 2015 release date for Avatar 2?
CherryBomb - 6/26/2012, 7:37 AM
Great, we have a Director that now has a HUGE ego. It's ridiculous.
I personally wasn't a fan of 'Avatar' , I thought it was pretty overrated and a little boring inbetween the start and finish. BUT I think it works better as a stand-alone film, it'll be more iconic that way than have 3 sequels we know won't be nowhere half as good.
whoelsebutkevin - 6/26/2012, 7:37 AM
@Monkey

James Cameron owns the #1 and #2 spot for All-Time Highest Grossing movies in the US. By no means is that by chance, yes there are plenty of variables to take in hand (3D Sales or Inflation) But saying he sucks is just naive. I'm sorry but your horribly wrong. Plus he's created two movies in the past ten years (Now read sentence 1 again).

@Mrs Tony Stark
Yeah didn't really think about that, he is quite enthused bout Ocean sets. Still it will be fun to see on big screen, you can't deny that.
whoelsebutkevin - 6/26/2012, 7:41 AM
^ lol
AthleticoPathetico - 6/26/2012, 7:41 AM
Seems like overkill. The movie was entertaining at best, which is no bad thing but i agree with CherryBomb i think leaving it as a stand alone movie would do it far more justice.
Joker08 - 6/26/2012, 7:41 AM

This + Dances With Wolves. James Cameron is a dick.

Avatar is so cliché-ridden and predictable - it lacks any sort of substance, and despite what Cameron would have you believe, there's absolutely nothing unique about it. It still amazes me that a film so trite and unoriginal can be treated as a "classic," and celebrated by the masses the way it is. Cameron is a lazy and untalented hack when it comes to filmmaking (particularly screenwriting)... he has an invariable tendency to patronize his audience with dumbed-down and unintelligent dialogue. But he's an amazing salesman.

I cheered when he got beat by his ex-wife in front of millions on national tv.
Tevii - 6/26/2012, 7:41 AM
this could be great news. Cant wait to see what he come sup with. If he is shooting 3 back to back, then he probably has a single epic story that will trump that last one.
He tends to make superior sequels.
F all the dumb ass haters
TheShape727 - 6/26/2012, 7:45 AM
Bring 'em on! Absolutely LOVED the original. Seeing it in IMAX 3D was the best theatrical experience i have ever been apart of and coming from someone who has seen hundreds of films on the big screen, that really says something. Looking forward to hearing more about this project!
Tevii - 6/26/2012, 7:45 AM
Yeah wah wah.... And The Last Samurai is the same story as Dances with Wolves. And Dances with wolves is the same story as Dune and Dune is the same story as the story of Moses.

Its humanity. We tell the same 5 stories over and over. Its how they are executed each time that determines their worth.

his movies are great films, and he at least pushes the envelope for the industry. He enhances the viewing for the audiences.
HULK2099 - 6/26/2012, 7:45 AM
Oh man James Cameron is going in
TheShape727 - 6/26/2012, 7:46 AM
This film sure does have a lot of haters to be the #1 grossing film of all time. Hmm...
TheShape727 - 6/26/2012, 7:47 AM
@Tevii Well said sir.
HelaGood - 6/26/2012, 7:48 AM
wow...who cares? the first one was cool, but it didnt leave me with an empty feeling in my stomach like i wanted more...let alone THREE more...

go ahead, mr. cameron, beat the dead horse...
damntree - 6/26/2012, 7:54 AM
@b@y - You forgot the part where John Smith and friends magically implant their minds into soulless indian clone bodies grown from their DNA. Also the part where John Smith trades his horse in for some mega-horse to become a legendary figure to the natives so they will accept him back into the group.
Mysterion - 6/26/2012, 7:56 AM
Overkill much?
CyberBishop - 6/26/2012, 7:57 AM
I was not really impressed with the first one (could only make it half way through).. So I wont be seeing these either.
Batman27 - 6/26/2012, 7:58 AM
Avengers might not be my personal favorite comic film but it's superior to avatar in every way.
jimoakley666 - 6/26/2012, 8:04 AM
Why? The first was utter [frick]ing pig swill.
KillerTomato - 6/26/2012, 8:05 AM
I hope the sequel is the same quality sequel he gave us when he directed Pirahna 2 back in the day...

Also is this even necessary? The next one will be about ocean polution, then we'll get something about destruction of a species...finally the last film will deal with Gloabl Warming and how a white man can save everyone from these problems (even if he is a blue Cat/Smurf thing).
