Well, this was expected. With the ever-growing international market, Warner Bros. Pictures have decided to release the Guillermo del Toro-directed film Pacific Rim in both 3D and 2D theatres. This should play well in international markets where 3D is in high demand right now. It's a safe studio move, especially for a big budget epic like this one. Thanks to Borys Kit from The Hollywood Reporter for the info.

Starring Charlie Hunnam (TV’s “Sons of Anarchy”), Idris Elba (“Thor”), Rinko Kikuchi (“The Brothers Bloom”), Charlie Day (“Horrible Bosses”), and Ron Perlman (the “Hellboy” films), Pacific Rim will be released on July 12, 2013.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Killik13 - 9/12/2012, 12:13 PM
Well, since Del Toro has said he didn't want it in 3D, I'll be seeing it first in 2D. But if it's impressive enough for a second viewing (As a rabid GDT fan, and considering this movie combines just about everything I love I think I'll be seeing this 5 or 6 times at least) I'd be really interested to see how well the conversion works. If it's done well, it could work better with this than most other movies that get 3D conversions.
