The Avengers has officially ended the theatrical run in US theatres. And what a run it was. The film opened on May 4th, and went on to break the opening weekend record with a shocking $207 million, as well as becoming the biggest film of the year, so far. The Joss Whedon-helmed superhero team up of a lifetime is also the third highest-grossing film ever, making over $1.5 billion worldwide. The only two films that are ahead of The Avengers, are James Cameron's Avatar and Titanic. Many would think that now The Avengers have finally assembled, this is the end. Of course, we know that this was the ending of Phase One, but also the beginning of Phase Two, which starts next year with Shane Black's Iron Man 3.

The Avengers is now available on Blu-ray and DVD.

Marvel Studios presents in association with Paramount Pictures “Marvel’s The Avengers”--the super hero team up of a lifetime, featuring iconic Marvel super heroes Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins.

Starring Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson, & directed by Joss Whedon from a screenplay by Joss Whedon, “Marvel’s The Avengers” is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” first published in 1963 and a comics institution ever since. Prepare yourself for an exciting event movie, packed with action and spectacular special effects, when “Marvel’s The Avengers” assemble on May 4, 2012. The film is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. In addition to "Marvel's The Avengers," Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including "Iron Man 3" on May 3, 2013; and “Thor 2” on November 8, 2013.

I hope all those critics who had some sort of vendetta against CBM's see this and realise how wrong they were.
ClarkFarley2012 - 10/5/2012, 5:20 PM
Helluva run. Just watched it again today.
ninjaturtle11 - 10/5/2012, 5:21 PM

The Avengers was EPIC!!! IMO, the best comic book movie of all time! Can't wait for Phase 2!

All good things must come to an end.
Originator2000 - 10/5/2012, 5:32 PM
Imagine if this was rereleased for Thanksgiving and Christmas weekends...
DioFoRio - 10/5/2012, 5:40 PM
this movie was soooo over-rated. Why the hell would a biologist try to pet an alien pusscobra?
DioFoRio - 10/5/2012, 5:41 PM
fargin loved Avenjadores
Watcher - 10/5/2012, 5:47 PM
I think of this movie as a grand achievement.

It was the kind of movie that I imagined all my life, but never dreamed would happen.

It is my favorite CBM, and I truly do not believe that any CBM will ever top it in any way. We'll see. Maybe Avengers 2..
Jefferys - 10/5/2012, 5:52 PM
Most under-rated movie of all time!
thewonderer - 10/5/2012, 5:58 PM
Movie could've been so much better with a few changes

But still I found it good. Great accomplishment marvel!

I just think people are sort of over praising because it really could have turned out a complete disaster and the fact that it didn't kind of excels it for people
hessecorp - 10/5/2012, 6:00 PM
Of course Titanic had to pass the two billion mark by being released twice. Avengers is better than both those crapfest combined.
CPBuff22 - 10/5/2012, 6:03 PM
Best Movie Of The Year and that includes the so called "Most Anticipated Movie of the Year" in TDKR and the "Best Action Movie of the Year" in Looper.
SageMode - 10/5/2012, 6:08 PM
The most epic superhero movie ever that no one thought would ever come true and be a success. It deserved every bit of gross and praise it got. Truly a true come true for the hardcore fans.

Cant wait for phase 2. Lets the epicness continue.
Nemeres - 10/5/2012, 6:11 PM
Saw it yesterday for a 2nd time. It's fun, but how some people managed to watch it so many times with few days in between is beyond me.
CorronZenith30 - 10/5/2012, 6:11 PM
Great news!

defenderofthefaith - 10/5/2012, 6:17 PM
The Avengers was a really good movie. I look forward to the next one. I will be curious to see who they add to the line up. I am quite sure they will keep these 6 heros but who will they add to them? As far as the other cast members go I think they will keep the same one's too except Coulson. Be interesting to who they add to this as well. Jane Foster should be a definite because hopefully she won't be pregnant again when filming starts, but who else will they add? And they should be careful not add too many so the screen is not too saturated with known characters. Might make the movie to confusing.

best comic book movie of the year the avengers (& best comic book movie ever!)

best movie of the year looper

best foreign movie of the year the raid
LAXtremest - 10/5/2012, 6:24 PM
I was so hyped for this movie I thought there'd be no way it could deliver. Boy was I wrong! It gave me everything I wanted and more! This is my all time favorite movie now. Bring on Phase 2.
LAXtremest - 10/5/2012, 6:25 PM
Marvel72- seeing Loopef tomorrow and I concur about The Raid.
GingerBird - 10/5/2012, 6:26 PM
Movie is WAAAY over hyped.
GingerBird - 10/5/2012, 6:27 PM
@hessecrap:
Avengers was also re-released. Look it up.
marvel72 - 10/5/2012, 6:30 PM
@ LAXtremest

you're gonna love it,definetly one of the best sci-fi movies i have ever seen.
CaptainRedFurySpain - 10/5/2012, 6:42 PM
Well deserved, best CBM of all time and one of my favorite movies ever.
Can't wait for phase 2!!!!
darkmetal - 10/5/2012, 6:46 PM
@GingerBird We go to movies to be entertained. The Avengers entertained me more than any other movie has and that was by midway through it.
It is the greatest action film ever!
No way its overhyped.
Overhyped would be a certain other CBM that came out this summer, that failed to entertain, while it seemed to exist merely to display great acting in non entertaining roles.
Avengers was better than Star Wars IV A New Hope, Raiders and Empire!
SpideyQuad - 10/5/2012, 6:51 PM
Stupid Batman fan, enough said
Fogs - 10/5/2012, 6:51 PM
Best CBM ever, easily.

Never thought I'd say that, but it exceeded my expectations.

And my expectations were waaay up there.

Gotta watch it again.
ComfortablyNumb - 10/5/2012, 6:55 PM
Best CBM to date. Nuff said.
defenderofthefaith - 10/5/2012, 7:06 PM
@DarkMetal,

I disagree. Even though I think The Avengers is a fantastic movie, I really don't think it was better then Star Wars, Empire or Raiders.
darkmetal - 10/5/2012, 7:15 PM
@defenderofthefaith I have no doubt that it was.
Those 3 are great and I think Raiders was the best of the 3. Star Wars and Empire are like Avengers as total fantasy, though Avengers had some real world moments. And all 3 movies were meant to be pure entertainment. Avengers delivered much more entertainment than any of the Star wars films with no weak spots.
superotherside - 10/5/2012, 7:19 PM
Great movie, deserves every penny and more. Hopefully when they re-release it sometime, it can beat Titanic.
Tymminator - 10/5/2012, 8:08 PM
The Avenegrs was not rereleased in the same way.

Titanic ended, then started another run this year.

Avengers was still out in some theaters, but around Labor day reopened to more theaters, which is pretty common. It's not like it closed out everywhere and then restarted like titanic did.

Even that said, I see no issue with a movie doing that either.
GuardianAngel - 10/5/2012, 8:37 PM
I liked $616 million more.
thalidomide - 10/5/2012, 9:50 PM
Best CBM!
FritoFrito - 10/5/2012, 10:57 PM
Awesome movie! Can't wait for phase two to begin. GOTG is hopefully going to be as epic as it sounds.
Minghagz - 10/5/2012, 11:12 PM
They're just now closing the books?! lol!
Great movie and well deserved! Not my favorite CBM and not the best CBM but it was one epic and impressive event!
Netman0007 - 10/5/2012, 11:52 PM

comicb00kguy - 10/6/2012, 12:28 AM
I had waited since 1982, when I first read an Avengers comic, to see them on the Big Screen. When I saw this movie, it was worth every minute of the wait. Excellence defined.
CorronZenith30 - 10/6/2012, 1:06 AM
That's a long time to wait comicb00kguy :-) AWESOME. Been waiting a while too, but I was born the year you picked up that comicbook so, you win LOL
Equivocal - 10/6/2012, 1:06 AM
The Avengers had "POTENTIAL FAILURE" written all over before openning day and NOBODY was expecting that MASSIVE weekend and I mean NOBODY saw that coming and now, not only established those characters as profitable franchaises, they are also very well known AROUND THE WORLD in just 4 years, since Iron Man in '08 !!!
To me it feels like a comic book movie brought to life on the Big screen, with plenty of cheese, just like the comics and my inner Nerd couldn't be Happier-Crazier about it !!!!!

CorronZenith30 - 10/6/2012, 4:14 AM
NoAssemblyReqd - 10/6/2012, 4:39 AM
This is crazy: if all goes according to plan, we'll have 18 MCU movies by 2018.

What's even crazier? Marvel doesn't have to stop there!
pOoPEE - 10/6/2012, 5:09 AM
Damn these Avengers articles, I have to watch the movie again every time I read them :-)

I swear I like this movie the more I watch it, so much shit I keep picking up that I missed before.
CorronZenith30 - 10/6/2012, 5:12 AM
@ NoAssemblyReqd - right on the mark mate! With good writers and directors... And of course continuing to pay respect to source material, Marvel studios has endless potential... Potentially :-)

Bring on Phase 2!
thunderforce - 10/6/2012, 5:59 AM
Awesome fantastic movie and I am not even sure Avatar 2 will beat it because when Avatar came out I could only see it in 3d at the theater and I did about 8 times but for Avatar 2 I have a 3d tv and can wait for the blu ray so if I go see it it will be once .
Azazel1 - 10/6/2012, 6:23 AM
I predicted between 350-400 million domestic, man was I ever wrong!

Not my favourite Marvel film due to the writing/story but one has to respect those numbers!

The CBM is here to stay...
