The 23rd James Bond film, Skyfall, is a monster hit at the box office. It's already at $430 million (probably more by now) internationally, and it just opened in US with huge $88 million in its opening weekend ($90 million, including the Thursday previews). Not only is it a box office success, but it also received a very positive critical reaction. The question is, could we see Skyfall making a big impact at the Oscars? According to the report over at Deadline, it's very possible. The film screened in front of a packed audience at the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences:
"James Bond and Abraham Lincoln both were very impressive at the box office this weekend but they also killed at the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences with packed turnaway crowds, certainly among the biggest of the year there and a good omen for their Oscar chances. For Lincoln Academy Award attention is expected but now MGM/Sony’s (with Eon) Skyfall, thanks to top reviews and the best business ever for a Bond, is also surprising pundits as an emerging Best Picture contender. One member told me they felt it is definitely Best Picture material and that was seconded by another, a self-confessed Bond uber-fan who proclaimed it the best ever."
I saw Skyfall two weeks ago, and absolutely loved it. Sam Mandes made a film that returned this 50-year-old franchise back on track, and it's a perfect combination of classic and modern version of James Bond. While it may be hard to get on that "Best Picture" list considering the big competition, there are a couple of categorizes I could definitely see the film getting nominated. The first one: cinematography. Roger Deakins really deserves that Oscar. The images in this film are just stunning. Right next to The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, this is his finest work. And as the report suggests, the other two categories would be the "Best Supporting Actor" and "Best Supporting Actress." Javier Bardem was mesmerizing and Judi Dench delivered another fantastic performance as "M." So, what do you think? Would you like to see Skyfall getting a Best Picture nod?
