No one saw this coming, that's for sure. According to the latest report, the Sam Mendes-directed 23rd James Bond film has passed Spider-Man 3 at the global box office, and it is officially Sony Pictures' highest-grossing film ever. That is quite amazing. Skyfall still needs to open in China, one of the biggest international markets today. If the film breaks out there, $1 billion should happen, which would make Skyfall the first James Bond film grossing $1 billion at the box office.

Skyfall was back on top this weekend at the domestic box office, beating The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2, and the film has also passed Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises at the international box office with $656.6 million.

Starring Daniel Craig, Ralph Fiennes, Javier Bardem, Judi Dench, Naomie Harris, Berenice Marlohe, Albert Finney and Ben Whishaw, Skyfall is now playing in theatres.

Loved it but thought majority of rights belong to MGM and eon
rockerdude22 - 12/9/2012, 9:54 AM

SUPERMAN2013 - 12/9/2012, 10:02 AM
Im afraid to say it,and this is only my opinion but I think it is slightly over rated, and this is coming from a british guy,but it is a good film for a james bond film, far from as bad as quantum
TheSonOfKrypton - 12/9/2012, 10:02 AM
Well doesn't that speak volumes.
SUPERMAN2013 - 12/9/2012, 10:03 AM
@levitikuz

because it wasnt sony who didnt want to do it,it was raimi's disagreement with sony about something to do with the 4th film
JonathaNisMagnuM - 12/9/2012, 10:06 AM
Definitely well deserved! Greatest Bond Movie of all the 007 films! Even in Quantum, Craig is stellar as Bond! Lets hope they keep Mendes on board w/ another sequel & have this Bond franchise be the measuring stick for what future Bond Movies should be!
JokerFan21 - 12/9/2012, 10:08 AM
Totally deserves it.
Robe - 12/9/2012, 10:12 AM
Spider-Man 3 didn't deserve to do better than the superior previous two.
shadyginzo - 12/9/2012, 10:15 AM
strangely misplaced pride, clashing with batman related mourning.
mattattack - 12/9/2012, 10:16 AM
MGM are now on suicude watch.

Suck it Twilight

:P

LEV@ At the time we had an article here from an insider or it might of been a writer saying that Sony wanted to take advantage of Spider-Mans popularity by continuing with a new and younger cast to keep things moving longer

they had no intention of making SM4 :)
CharacterAssassin - 12/9/2012, 10:30 AM
It was a team effort.
Maximus101 - 12/9/2012, 10:30 AM
Amazing movie, deserves the 1 billion mark no question. One of my favorite movies this year behind TDKR and dredd and looper.
bundyse - 12/9/2012, 10:36 AM

Ceejay - 12/9/2012, 10:49 AM
Very deceptive headline. Sony only has distributing rights to MGM movies, the production and ownership of Skyfall is an MGM, EON and Danjaq deal, just like most of the Bond films. Sony owns Columbia Pictures who make the Spider-man films so yes, that's their baby. But they have no production ownership in any percentage of stake whatsoever in the Bond franchise other than to distribute it for MGM around the world.
SpiderManofHouseStark - 12/9/2012, 10:56 AM
its sad that spiderman 3 even lasted this long lol
Equivocal - 12/9/2012, 11:05 AM
of course SKYFALL surpassed tdkr at the international box office, it's a better film !

I can not say the same about Ice Age: Continental Drift ($714 mil) which also passed tdkr ($632 mil) at the international box office

oh well, I ENJOYED Skyfall TREMENDOUSLY !!!

twilight ??

I've seen the first one and that was the end of it...
teabag - 12/9/2012, 11:08 AM
I think at this point a position in the top ten highest grossing movies of all time is not out of the question

hell its only $163 mil behind TDKR

:)
LehnsienLaw - 12/9/2012, 11:10 AM
@teabag ,that is an amazing list, almost exactly mine. and yes this film deserves it...TDKR DOESN'T
Funsize - 12/9/2012, 11:24 AM
One of my favorite films of 2012 along with avengers, dark knight rises, the grey, dredd, and wreck it ralph.
Ric - 12/9/2012, 11:25 AM

Robe - 12/9/2012, 12:59 PM
Loved Dredd, just sorry it flopped.
ACira - 12/9/2012, 1:00 PM
@LEVITIKUZ everyone involved in Spider-Man 3 walked out of Spider-Man 4 after Raimi left the project. Maguire, Dunst, etc, wanted to show their loyalty to Raimi, and didn't want to make more Spidey movies without him. Trying to continue a series (already weighed down with lots of continuity) with a completely new cast, is very difficult and would be likely to fail (since Spider-Man 3 was so poorly received by critics and audiences alike).

The other option for Sony was to reboot, with younger actors and focus on the things they felt they got wrong the first time around, specifically the high school stuff - the producers all said they wished they'd spent more time with Peter in high school, at least in the first film, as it was so big a part of the character's life in the comics, while they also had the chance to delve into Peter's past and explore his parents, bring Gwen in as his first love (and do the Death of Gwen Stacy storyline at some point), which they obviously couldn't do properly in the Raimi series.

They most likely would've made Spider-Man 4 if Raimi stayed, because then they'd have retained the original cast.
Gnyah123 - 12/9/2012, 1:30 PM

SuperDan89 - 12/9/2012, 2:07 PM
Great news!

Nice to see Skyfall, like TDKR not banking on [frick]ing 3D ticket sales
GammaVerve - 12/9/2012, 2:34 PM
tdkr getting its butt kicked again!
eleven59 - 12/9/2012, 2:50 PM
Im guessing there will be a sequel ;)
TheYoungMan - 12/9/2012, 3:36 PM
I'm glad Skyfall is doing good. With the success of TDKR and Skyfall this year WITHOUT 3D, maybe studios will not feel like every blockbuster needs to be in 3D to make money.

Guess what the last two billion dollar non-3D movies were? The Dark Knight in 2008, and The Dark Knight Rises in 2012. Maybe Skyfall will be next. 70mm IMAX all the way!
NeoBaggins - 12/9/2012, 4:39 PM
Word of mouth must be strong with this one. Great film and an epic step up from Quantum. Awesome in IMAX.

Can't wait to see Graig own the role one more time.
Xandera - 12/9/2012, 5:38 PM
Saw it for the second time today... Even better than the first time... It deserves to be a member of the billion dollar club...
druzod2501 - 12/9/2012, 6:18 PM
and once again I'm painfully reminded that Spider-Man 3 ACTUALLY MADE MONEY!!! and the world isn't fair
I'm so glad this deserved version of Bond is getting praised! I absolutely love it! The greatest unexpected success of the year! Please sign Craig for two more and don't foil to PC bullshit: Elba rules, but if it's not broke..., ya' dig?! "CHANGE!" Idiots!
This movie kicked ass! I was able to dismiss the hit whore writers that compared Bond to Batman. Not that it's a crazy comparison, but unless payed, you should truly check yourself. Period.
*even if payed, find a dark corner and just do it.
Off yourself. You just used Bond and Batman in a neg light, for a paycheck. :-|
It doesn't make you a pop culture participant; oh shit the stories I'd have to relay.., naw it truly shows character. Oh I'm sorry is there a few series of publications you're working on simultaneously? Right.
blackster - 12/9/2012, 10:07 PM
"Skyfall was back on top this weekend at the domestic box office, beating The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2"

So there is still hope for mankind after all :)

Oh wait, scratch that. I just remembered Hunger Games' near $700 Million gross.
TexasTwoFace - 12/9/2012, 10:45 PM
My favorite movies of the year so fat in order:

The Avengers
Silver Linings Playbook
Lincoln
Skyfall
The Dark Knight Rises.

But I hold out high hopes for The Hobbit and Zero Dark Thirty. And Argo was real close to making my top five.
TexasTwoFace - 12/9/2012, 10:45 PM
Oh and Les Mis.
darkseidpawns - 12/10/2012, 5:53 AM
@LehnsienLaw
