CAPTAIN AMERICA Star Chris Evans Clears Up Confusion Over The Future Of His Career

Fans were disappointed to learn that Chris Evans, aka Steve Rogers/Captain America, might be retiring from acting after his contract with Marvel expires. In a new interview, he makes clear that this is NOT the case. Click on for details.

Skip to 2.03 in the following interview to hear what he has to say:

Interviewer: I want to address these rumors because they're out there right now, Chris, that you are quitting acting and much to the dismay of your fans. Not true?

Evans: Yeah, well you know you say one thing and, I said that I directed last year, I really responded to it. I really enjoyed it. I'd love to focus a little bit more on that...

Interviewer: Suddenly, you're not an actor anymore!

Evans: Then retiring! Hanging up the shoes I guess! By no means am I planning on retiring, it's kind of a silly statement. Um, but I certainly am going to try and focus a bit more on directing at this point.

So that clears that up. Whether Chris would be interested in extending his contract with Marvel is another matter. He has already made clear that he thinks six films is an enormous commitment in itself, so any extension to said contract would seem rather unlikely at this point.

Chris' new Marvel film, Captain America: The Winter Soldier hits US theaters on April 4, and Snowpiercer, the South Korean science fiction film in which he also has a leading role, will arrive in theaters on June 27.

Omarvls - 3/31/2014, 8:01 AM
Said it before now after seeing it for the THIRD time
Yeah

Winter Soldier is the best Comicbookmovie of all time it has replaced
The Dark Knight as my all time favorite

This is from someone who loved the Avengers but still thought The Dark Knight was much better
SuperCat - 3/31/2014, 8:04 AM
Maybe he'll direct a CBM sometime in the future.
SauronsBANE1 - 3/31/2014, 8:09 AM
A lot of people think the whole retiring from acting thing (now debunked, I suppose), combined with Sebastian Stan's 9 film commitment, means it's a given that Bucky is going to take over as Captain America soon...but I seriously doubt that's going to happen. At least, not anytime soon.

First, the reason Stan has 9 films compared to Evans' 6 is simply because Evans is a more established, A-list actor with much more negotiation power. Marvel and his agent had to strike a deal that was more fair to both sides. Stan, on the other hand, pretty much had to accept whatever deal Marvel threw his way. It was a business decision, plain and simple. He'll be in those 9 films IF and only if Marvel wants him to. Nothing is a given at this point.

And second, I just don't see the logic in it. Replace perhaps one of the most recognizable Avengers with a 2nd tier actor and expect him to lead potentially his own trilogy of movies? Really? I just don't see that happening, mostly because most audiences wouldn't exactly respond well to that. What works in the comics doesn't necessarily work in the films. But if I'm wrong, I'll happily eat these words.
MrNiklander - 3/31/2014, 8:13 AM
^^^This what SauronsBANE1 said.I love Evans as an actor and honestly I cant wait for him to direct movies.Dude has enough money to do anything he wants like Keanu Reeves after The Matrix Trilogy
Bekss - 3/31/2014, 8:17 AM
I heard he almost hate working out so much so I hope he ends up being just a Nick Fury type of character and Stan takes his place as Cap. Same with RDJ if he doesn't want to continue. Hemsworth is the only one saying he will be Thor forever.
Bekss - 3/31/2014, 8:18 AM
But he has to be Cap at least till Avengers 3
DaVinci31 - 3/31/2014, 8:19 AM
Shocker.

DaVinci31 - 3/31/2014, 8:20 AM
@Omarvls

Those are some big words there.
MsDarkPhoenix - 3/31/2014, 8:22 AM
All these people saying that TWS is better than TDK and the Avengers... I'll have to see it to believe it, these are pretty big words!!
MrSotoMan - 3/31/2014, 8:25 AM
Directing, is a lot funner than being an actor.

That's all I gotta say.
ruadh - 3/31/2014, 8:28 AM
@SauronsBANE1

Exactly. They originally wanted to get 9 films out of him, but he couldn't commit to that many.

As I keep pointing out, there's several actors who have multi-picture contracts. It doesn't mean Tim Roth will ever come back, or that Marvel has a plan for him to return. It just means they CAN bring him back if they find a future use for his character.

I always point out, Ed Norton and Terence Howard STILL have contracts with Marvel. Doesn't mean anything beyond the option possibility.

Also, like you, I keep pointing out how I don't expect the Captain death/Bucky fill in story either. I really don't expect general audiences to turn up for a Bucky Cap movie, and I'd be shocked if Marvel did either. Yes, they'll have to replace Evans eventually, but probably with someone who kinda looks the part and is more recognizable.
ProfessorX - 3/31/2014, 8:30 AM
I think it depends what you're looking for in a CBM as to whether it's "better" than TDK. As a film, I would probably rate TDK higher, but as a CBM, I think TWS surpasses it. The characters in TWS are perfectly translated from the comic books, and the action (fight choreography in particular) is far superior to that in TDK.
SageMode - 3/31/2014, 8:31 AM
That host is sexy as hell. Yummy
Omarvls - 3/31/2014, 8:34 AM

@DaVinci31

Yeah cause The Dark Knight has been my all time favorite Comicbookmovie of all time and to me nothing has come close not even the Avengers

But for me The Winter Soldier was that good, so good that it replaced The Dark Knight as MY All Time favorite

Now that is only my opinion that I feel a lot of other people will also have
TopCat89 - 3/31/2014, 8:41 AM
@soto

Are you speaking from experience? I always imagined an actor's life, as ridicously tough as it is, to be less stressful than a director's...

As for Evans taking a break from acting for the director's chair...I'm interested to see how that turns out...though it's a shame won't see him on screen for a while...thought he was great in Cap2, The Iceman and Snowpiercer....
MrReese - 3/31/2014, 8:43 AM
Lol he reminds me off me when I open a pizza box all drunk. XD
antoineflemming - 3/31/2014, 8:48 AM
I don't think TWS is better than TDK on a holistic level, but I'd say that Batman should fight as good as or better than Cap does here. TDK is still a stronger film IMO, as far as theme, tone, and iconography. TWS is really close IMO though, and I like Chris Evans' Captain America/Steve Rogers more than I like Bale's Batman/Bruce Wayne. For me, best CBMs are:

TDK
TWS
MOS
BB
IM1
Avengers
TDKR
TFA
SM2
The Wolverine
TDW
TIH/HULK2003 (like the actors/actresses in 2003, story in TIH)
Thor
SM1
XM:FC
TASM
XM1
Wolverine:Origins
XM2
XM3
FF
FF:ROTSS
IM2
IM3
SM3
antoineflemming - 3/31/2014, 8:49 AM
That said, I think as a specifically Comic Book film, TWS is the best. As a film regardless of comic book ties or source material accuracy, TDK is the best.
MrSotoMan - 3/31/2014, 8:50 AM
@TopCat89- Well you have a lot more control as to what you are doing. I am talking from experience. I have acted in plays, and even though a directors job is challenging and tough, nothing is more rewarding than witnessing the final product of your work being shown to others, and to have people say it was cool to say the least.

As director you get a hands in on what the movie should look like, how actors should act, how dialogue should be said, how moments in the movie should be conveyed, you get so much more control in scenes rather than an actor where you are following along with what your boss says, an act out the scene to the best of your ability. Directing to me; is a lot better than acting, along with screenwriting.
batz11 - 3/31/2014, 8:52 AM
Thorsday baby! Can't wait...cool Fan-manip of the Avengers 2 suit...

TheFirstAvenger97 - 3/31/2014, 9:04 AM
The way he freaked over the pizza... Lol
cipher - 3/31/2014, 9:11 AM
They're not going to do the "Death Of" storyline. I just don't see it happening.

Whatever, feel free to screencap this shit in case I'm wrong.
cipher - 3/31/2014, 9:18 AM
My girlfriend made me sniff some new detergent she's trying out, and asked me what I thought. I said "babe, the day I believe my opinion actually matters in these things is the day I willingly spend more than five minutes with your mother without the aid of alcohol".

Screencap that too.
batz11 - 3/31/2014, 9:20 AM
Ciph, post a naked pic of yourself, then I'll do the screen-cap...

cipher - 3/31/2014, 9:31 AM
Sure thing, batz!! I manscaped just for you.
TopCat89 - 3/31/2014, 9:33 AM
@soto

Yeah I can imagine witnessing your own story or adaptation coming together on screen/stage would be an awesome feeling...then audience members saying they liked it, being the cherry on the cake. I myself atm am trying to train as an actor, though I've always had a love for storytelling and camerawork...a hobby of mine...I chose the actor's path as tough as it is, because I love how it frees me up, for me the feeling during/afterwards can't be beaten. That being said I always have had it in mind to try directing or writing at some point in the future if the opportunity presents itself...atm I wouldn't know where to begin or find the time...focusing on acting for now! Interesting to hear your own experience of acting in plays....are you still working as an actor or focusing on directing/screenwriting now?
kevberg - 3/31/2014, 9:40 AM
hellloooooo legs.... (i mean the interviewer).
batz11 - 3/31/2014, 9:52 AM
Yeah, I've seen your manscapin' before @Ciph haha

MrSotoMan - 3/31/2014, 9:59 AM
@TopCat89- Yea either way work always pays off no matter if you are an actor or director. I just feel there is a lot more that could be done as a director.

I acted in Cinderella as an extra, I was also in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels as Arthur, and I did a movie where I directed and acted in as the main character but was never released, that right there assured me I am not ready for acting or good for acting.

As for directing I made the movie I said, a bunch of shorts that was on Youtube that had me acting in it as well but it was in 07 when Youtube decided to take down everything that was copyright, and fan trailers were at a all time high, where there I would practice editing on Windows Movie Maker. The latest was Vigilante which I had a very small role and but I directed, wrote and edited it as well. I remember even firing the writer cause me and him just wasn't on the same page. He wanted ideas to go one way where I wanted ideas to go one way. His favorite line "At least the wine was cheap" he wanted badly, but I told him the line just doesn't fit with the movie's tone what so ever which the tone we were trying to go for was gritty. Hell he even wanted one of the extras to ask in a store for "A pack of Newps", hated it.

Overall it was hell for a month, but to have it shown and people seeing it and saying that they actually liked it and was even interviewed is something to behold honestly. In fact, here is my interview with "the world must think I am cool" brother.

He even bought the camera we worked on, felt really embarrassed he told almost everyone that. Lesson learned for certain, but he isn't working on this years AFC with me, he is going to be with someone else which I think is good, because during the movie, me and him had budding heads at times on how scenes should work and what doesn't work, but then again that's his flaw as a human being, he thinks he is the most competent, the only one who is right, and smug person I've ever known.
MrSotoMan - 3/31/2014, 10:00 AM
@TopCat89- My next movie, will no doubt be a comedy/action movie, I have an idea that I think will rock, and we've saved 1,000 for the movie so I am excited for what we can do with a budget, other than having 150 dollars as our budget last year.
Destined - 3/31/2014, 10:03 AM
Thanks for clearing that up Chris.
DrDoom - 3/31/2014, 10:05 AM
He needs to get a contract extension. He IS Captain America.
DudeGuyMan - 3/31/2014, 10:14 AM
The only way they'd kill him off is if Marvel did the Civil War storyline and I woud have no problem with that.
TopCat89 - 3/31/2014, 10:47 AM
@soto

Congrats on 'Vigilante'. Must be satisfying, after a stressful process, for the finished product having a positive reaction. Be interesting to see what you achieve with a bigger budget on your next project. When completed, If CBM related, you should post a trailer in Fanfic or something. Be interesting to have a look!

Oh and yeah I know what it's like to have a brother...have an older one myself....the "successful businessman" of the family. Though he is supportive of my decision to be an actor, rather than work behind a desk, he told me "if all else fails with the acting, you can always be my pool cleaner" hahaha brotherly love
MrSotoMan - 3/31/2014, 11:53 AM
@TopCat89- Yes it is extremely satisfying to think for days your movie sucks then to finally realize it's not half bad at all. I am thinking about making some type of fan-film that isn't restricted by the AFC or any type of competition. The next competition after AFC is Gasperilla maybe, but that's for a feature length movie maybe which I am hoping to accomplish next year. But a fan film trailer...now that would be interesting to see how big it gets to inspire me to actually make a full 20-40 minute movie maybe....Maybe.

I'm telling ya brotherly love, my brothers different though, he likes to mooch off of other peoples success and claim it to be his own or that he had a huge hand in it while not giving anyone else credit but to himself.
Gary8264 - 4/1/2014, 5:10 AM
I like Evans as cap, and thin' he's a good actor. As a matter of fact, if any of you haven' seen "Cellular", it's actually pretty good also.
