Superman: Man Of Steel....The Video Game, Will We Get One? Superman: Man Of Steel....The Video Game, Will We Get One?

With the new movie coming out in 2013, are we to expect anything less than an amazing next-gen game as well? Let's discuss...

We all remember the cancelled Superman game that was in development back in 2009 by Factor 5 for the next-gen systems PS3 and XBOX360. We learned that it was cancelled over debt issues and contributing parties involved going out of business. It looked truly amazing, especially given that all we really saw were images and video from early on in its development. By the way, you can find the link to Factor 5's efforts in the POLL below.

Now, we also remember that with Nolan's 2005 release of Batman Begins, that we got also a Batman Begins video game for the PS2, XBOX, and GAME CUBE, which overall received good reviews. It was a new beginning and although it seemed routine at times...it was a fun play. Then, as TDK was in production and almost ready for its release, we learned that we would NOT be getting a TDK video game based off the movie. Instead we were gifted with the awesomeness of Batman: Arkham Asylum....and oh did we praise it. In fact, we are now salivating over its next installment entitled Batman: Arkham City.

So, given the information at present, what are we to expect from the Superman franchise? We know that Snyder's Watchmen was developed for the next-gen machines...will his Man of Steel also be developed for them or will we be getting a Superman: Suicide Slums type of game that is not based on the revamped hero?

Of course only time will tell but I am expecting WB to pull the cork out and really take that leap of faith that they soooo desperately need to take in order to really launch their flagship character to new heights. Superman Returns the game simply wasn't enough. We need something more. Something that will give us all that we have hoped for in a Superman game. With the technology that is available to us, there is no excuse for making this another mediocre effort. It needs to be visually realistic and cutting edge a la UNCHARTED franchise where GamePro quoted it as being 'about as cutting edge as we've seen thus far'.

It needs to give us free roaming...if we wish to reach outer space.....why not? We should feel as though there is nothing holding Superman back from where he needs to go. Perhaps several missions throughout the world, and each mission is free roaming.

Lastly it needs to have a well written script that can rival with Hollywood cinema. As GamePro bragged on the Uncharted franchise by saying 'if this keeps up, the Matthew McConaugheys and Nicolas Cages of the world will all be out of a job...' Heck...i would even go as far to say to let the creators of Uncharted helm the project. Naughty Dog.

So do we deserve a well crafted Superman game where we can not only believe a man can fly but in a sense believe that WE can fly too? I say YES and i wouldn't demand anything less than just that.

Feel free to leave your flight paths below. Primary colors only please. :)

movie games usually have a low rating status.

1.Make a Superman movie not based on the movie ALA Batman arkham city not based from TDK.

2. If flight is incorporated into the game , open world is a must and flying controls have to be good.

Rocksteady should be put in charge of all DC... heck ALL comic book games. Rocksteady making a Man of Steel would be epic!

Frogman....agreed...they have done all too well with Batman...but if not Rocksteady then Naughty Dog should have a shot at it.

Here's the thing. Superman is very difficult to make into a game. He has a lot of powers to figure out how to implement well, flying mechanics present a special challenge of their own, and his level of invulnerability makes it difficult to strike the balance between "I'm Superman! That shouldn't hurt me" and "Hey, this is ridiculously easy.

Only a few enemies have Kryptonite and for the most part, I'm powerful enough to take everyone else out without a sweat." I enjoyed Batman Begins, but looking back it was just decent and one of a handful of movie tie-in games(along with Spider-man 1 and 2 movie games) that was really worth while. Movie tie-ins tend to be sub-par because they're rushed and often just cheap tie-ins. Combining the movie tie-in factor with the challenge of making a Superman game, I think it's unlikely we'd be pleased with the result.

I'd rather have some studio take on the task of making a game that's not necessarily tied to the upcoming movie so they'd have as much time as they want. If they could make a tie-in game that was as decent as Batman Begins, then cool. One of the things I'd say that was great about Batman Begins is how it helped contribute ideas that made Arkham Asylum great. Bottom line, if they do make a tie-in, I think the best we can hope for is a decent stepping stone to the Superman game we really want.

Superman is boring, and nobody wants to play a Superman game. but a Batman Beyond game, now you talking my language.

I agree with BIGBMH they should have their own game separate from the movie. A movie game just causes limitations. Look at Arkham Asylum/City, so many possibilities, villains and missions and it's not attached to Nolan's films. And have alternate costumes for Supes. I want a studio to take their time and make a great game. Don't put out another half baked superman game, we have enough of those.

I'd love to see a GOOD Superman game. like BIGBMH said trying not to make the game to easy, and not to where your wondering why Superman is effected is hard. Also I know this may be asking for a lot, but if There is a superman game I want DESTRUCTION!!!!!!!!!! Legit major fights for example with Doomsday like in the video, or Darksied or other major villains who can actually go toe to toe with Supes should leave that part of the city in destruction honestly. That would make me feel like Superman!

Sadly I believe the best way to make a Superman game
would be with the Lego franchise. He's hard character
to do right in a game. With that said I'd still buy
whatever game they release.

Oh God yes! I have been waiting since I played Spider-man 2 for an EPIC open world Superman game! It should have fully destructible environments with the same tech as SW :The Force Unleashed but on a MUCH larger scale, I envision three main areas-Metropolis of course, Smallville and the Fortress. I ask for Rocksteady studios simply because no one else seems up to the seemingly impossible task.

No tie in game, seperate it from the film and it might have a chance. I still remember Superman 64 and I still shudder everytime I think about it. Superman needs a kick ass video game just like Batman.

I want to fly around Metropolis, fly to the Fortress of Solitude.....and go inside it to find a fully detailed and functioning home base for the Man of Steel........be able to fly to Smallville.......and lastly to the moon lol

@m1312020 - I would play the [frick] out of a Lego Superman game. Plus it could work as a good first step to figuring a more developed game out. They did release a Lego Batman shortly before Arkham Asylum...

@BIGBMH....i agree with you. That it should not be a game tied to the movie. I hope that they go with the classic look for Superman when and if they get to another game. And yes....Superman is hard to translate into a game but i believe that it can be done.....and should be done...even if it isnt Super challenging....the point is that its exciting and satisfying to the fan. But great points.

@alucard365....thanks for commenting ;)

@SHHH...I Love your icon, man. Well this article is expressed in hoping that we get a decent game....hasnt come yet.

@THABATMAN....yes yes yes

@m1312020...ummm no offense but i think we should leave lego to LUCAS and SPIELBERG.

@Masterkalel...great point. Spiderman 2 was sweet. But i think that as BLUMEX said ..OPEN WORLD is something i def wanna see. You know something that i just thought of regarding that ( I KNOW IT PROBABLY WOULD NEVER HAPPEN BUT,,,)was that if it were open world then it would mean that he could visit GOTHAM and other cities that home super heroes....perhaps those locations could be unlocked thru apps or something. ANyway....

@JayJayCAW,,,,for real....interplanetary flight would be awesome. MAYBE watchtower on the moon??..

@jbak368....i forgot about legobatman....how did that happen?...;)

@BASTARD...i agree....i'll say no more.
BIGBMH
BIGBMH - 9/30/2011, 8:25 AM
@naterator, I'm definitely with you. It can and should be done. I just think it might take a few more tries before they come close to an Arkham Asylum level Superman game. With Batman, they can look to other 3rd person action games and stealth games due to Batman's abilities being mostly normal. There really aren't many games out there that could serve as an inspiration for a Superman video game's gameplay style, so that's another reason why it might require more trial and error even with people working hard to make a good game.
Frogman
Frogman - 9/30/2011, 8:36 AM
@naterator this is why I'd like Rocksteady to make all DC games, so there can be lots of easter eggs and like you say, being able to travel to Gotham as some DLC or something would be great! "Superman: Metropolis". I'd like collectibles in the Superman game, like the Riddles in Batman: Arkham Asylum or the ones in Gears of War.

@BIGBMH....now i havent played the new GL game but i hear its good....perhaps it could be similar to it in some respect??
naterator
naterator - 9/30/2011, 8:51 AM
Great point Frogman....if Rocksteady did it then perhaps AA and MOS could tie into eachother along with other superhero games from DC....it could be a form of DC universe online without having to pay for the subscription...
Frogman
Frogman - 9/30/2011, 9:02 AM
@naterator and they would work as stand alone games too. The GL game is alright but again no where near the standard of AA, I think superhero games are better when they're not based on a film.
ManofSteelo
ManofSteelo - 9/30/2011, 9:43 AM
HELL YES!! to a Supes game!! SR was shite -- especially the Warworld stuff. If it's not a direct adapation of MOS, then it should be like Arkham Asylum in terms of gameplay. As bad as "Smallville" was, a Smallville game would have been pretty cool, and would have tied nicely into the show (Goal: to become Superman). There's a void out there for the Big Blue Boy Scout in video games -- here's hoping it's filled sooner rather than later!!
naterator
naterator - 9/30/2011, 10:02 AM
Yes....SR was sooooo lacking. I enjoyed ot for what it was...but seriously...i was disappointed when the end of the game was concluded by a series of tornados...ANyhow...games make us feel young and for that we enjoy them.

Also, for any of you that havent seen THE LEGACY yet...check it out.... Ive watched it twice now and its gotten to me each time. I get teary eyed...yeah its silly but I think its cuz i have kids too....so to remember what its like to have a childs imagination and think to apply it to your father or hope that your children will see you in this same light is to say the least ....touching. I'll post it here in case you didnt see the Scoop that i posted a day or two ago. Enjoy.

@BIGBMH-i think I have a way around the invulnerability. some super heroes have beaten Superman, just not for very long. what if there was a game where there were consequences? if someone beats you, instead of going back to the beginning of the fight, like most games, it jumps to where Superman recovers. the bad guy has captured Superman in some trap that you have to figure out how to get out of, or has lefy him for dead and has tried to take over the world (Darkseid for this one) or has caused complete and utter destruction (Doomsday). i think this would be an awesome idea for a game

If only his costume was that badass!! I mean loosing the red underwear is one thing but the suit still needs some contrast otherwise it just looks...ordinary and empty.

I didn't like the Returns game for Xbox at all...
I remember playing the 2600 game for hours! Still a groundbreaking game IMO. Kids these days (like my 9yr old son) have know idea how lucky they are to have Call of Duty games, Madden games, 10 Nickelodeon channels on 24 hrs a day...wow, I'm feeling old!!!

@naterator -- I'm also a fan of "The Legacy", I think you're right it's because I'm a Superman fan and father. It's also because it has a bit of "Adventures of Superman" George Reeves feel to it (when they're watching the TV clip). Not to get off topic but that's always been MY favorite Superman.

naterator - 10/3/2011, 10:16 AM
@cbostont102....oh not off topic at all....thanks for commenting. I was really touched by "the legacy" short film. I thought it was very creative and it was made to make you believe that your father was Superman. Crazy but definite props to the ones that put it together.

Legacy was fun to watch with my son as well...the boy that played the son (Paul Butcher) used to be on a Nickelodeon show "Zoey 101"...one of my son's favorites.

I have to admit I liked that short much better than Returns!

@cbostont102 i knew i had seen that kid somewhere!! it was a great short film.

@JayJayCAW...I would love to have the capability to fly to the moon....and MARS. Hall of Justice would be sweet. there could even be unlockable players such as Batman and WonderWoman....Green Lantern or Flash... that you could do small quests with that would aid superman in his fight for TRUTH JUSTICE & THE AMERICAN WAY....

The dramatic but much needed re-development of the Superman franchise has started with the New Man Of Steel Movie coming June 14th 2013... It is only RIGHT that The Man Of Steel Video Game get the same re-development. I still have my Superman Returns video game...... sigh.... Though it was an "ok" game for that time... As SUPERman I still felt limited. I believe The Creators of Uncharted, God Of War, Batman:Arkham Asylum...hell The guys that created The Amazing Spider Man Game should have control over the Next Superman/Man Of Steel Video Game project (Team work PEOPLE). No limits, Amazing Graphics, Free roaming, Brilliant Story line.... If I wanna go into space... Let it be so, For I am Superman!!!!! If I wanna go swimming in the deep blue sea..... Let it be so, For I am Superman!!!! If I wanna visit china... Let it be so, For I am Superman!!!!!!!!!! The entire world, galaxy is Superman's backyard/playing field... If I wanna fly around the world at light speed to turn back the hands of time "Like Christopher Reeves did in the 1978 blockbuster of Superman..." Let it be so, For I am Superman!!!!!!!! C'mon... It's Superman!!! Lets have our imaginenations run wild with this one!! Please!!! For the LOVE OF GOD!!!! Thank you. That is all.
