Mat Damon is not a good idea for Cap. America

Everyone here thinks Mat Damon is a perfect choice for Stever Rogers. I have to say, NAY!

Mat Damon is an incredible actor who has done amazing action sequences in the Bourne movies.

Captain America is a very action orientated man. So Matt Damon so far has the character down. Captain America is a male with blonde hair. Up to that point Mat is still doing well. The further you get to the character he can not do it.

Captain America is a tall man. Steve Rogers is a calm looking gentleman but can appear scary. Matt Damon does NOT have those qualities.

I mean yes, character-wise Mat Damon could perhaps pull off any and all acting that would need to be done for Cap. But physically no.
I recently saw "Invictus" and it showed Mat Damon shirtless for one of the scenes in the locker room. Yes he is buff but he could not pull off Steve Rogers. He is getting too old to do that.

I know this article is kind of short but it gets right to the point. Matt Damon is not qualified to play Cap.

(Sorry all you fan boys out there that disagree with me, this is my opinion)

I have to agree.

Steve Rogers has to have a very handsome and MANLY face!

Like Ryan McPartlin or Mark Valley.

What do you mean Everyone????

Ive been saying NO lol.

DAMON's best off sticking with BOURNE, though i rate him well over ackles an walker for the role lol!

What makes me laugh is everyone b1tches (those who wants young) at any older actor but DAMONS ok lmao, again he's up there with CENA for CAP! (Which ain't far on the CAP list).

Theres a lot better out there, UNKNOWN or NEW actor is best!!

lc - 1/4/2010, 3:59 AM
Hates damon makes me sick i tell you lol
LEEE777 - 1/4/2010, 4:01 AM
You what lc??

He's a good actor, but cant see him as CAP, he's MATT DAMON ffs! : D
lc - 1/4/2010, 4:14 AM
i HATE HIM abit like sam whats his face @LEE
lol.
InTylerWeTrust - 1/4/2010, 4:35 AM
Regarding Damon's height: Height is an incredibly easy aspect of a person to change on film. Give Damon a couple inches in boot lifts and you're good as gold.

Regarding not having the qualities you mentioned: Damon can be a gentleman and be charming. He can also be intimidating and scary as f*ck, as proven by the Bourne trilogy. He has great range. He'd be able to be the kind, charismatic Steve Rogers, and also the intense, tough Captain America.

Damon would be a fantastic Cap. He may be a tad old, but he looks like he's in his early 30's, and can get into excellent physical shape. Captain America is an action-oriented role, yes, but stunt-men can do some of the work and Damon I'm sure could handle some of the action.
LEEE777 - 1/4/2010, 6:21 AM
LEO's a better CAP!!

Check the mans movies out, if they want MOVIE STAR he's our man!! ; D

OdinsBeard - 1/4/2010, 11:48 AM
you kind of stepped on your foot with this one : 'I mean yes, character-wise Mat Damon could perhaps pull off any and all acting that would need to be done for Cap. But physically no.'

you basically said, "well he can become everything the character is and needs but he's not a scary as i want him to be'
we HAVE/NEED/GOT TO stop trying to cast based off of looks. none of us would have casted hugh jackman in wolverine, none of us would have casted heath ledger as the joker. if he can 'pull off any and all acting that would need to be done for cap' then it stops there. nothign else needs to be said. thats ALL that matters (okay not all we can't have will smith here) but you get what im saying. the only thing i care about when it comes to the actors look in this movie is the blonde hair. which can be dyed.

LEEE@ i think they need to go a route of a MOVIE STAR. i don't want an unknown for this. let's get a seasoned actor to nail this thing. leo would be fine in my book. so would worthington, pitt, and damon.
MovieTheaterLad - 1/4/2010, 12:53 PM
@Weiner

Pitt is way too old for Winter Soldier.

@SuperAlex

I don't mind having a seasoned actor, but big named star is asking for problems.

Imagine Johnny Depp getting cast as someone. Or Brad Pitt, or Angelina Jolie, or Megan Fox. You're basically setting up the movie to become sold to the public like this:

"THIS SUMMER, JOHNNY DEPP IS WHY THE HELL DO YOU CARE WHO IT IS IT'S JOHNNY DEPP AND THAT'S ALL YOU CARE ABOUT AND YOU'LL SEE THIS MOVIE REGARDLESS OF WHAT IT IS BECAUSE IT HAS JOHNNY DEPP"

If a big named A-Lister star is to play a pre-established character from a previous work of fiction, be it in another medium or whatever, than their name and persona will most likely outshine the character they play.
OdinsBeard - 1/4/2010, 1:09 PM
movietheatrelad@ totally, i undertsand exactly where you're coming from. but i remain in my same camp and will acknowledge that i am, for sure, in the minority.

i struggle with which way I THINK they should go on this issue. I get that a big name actor could be to TOO BIG and overshaddow that which we should be caring about, cap himself. but with casting an unknown you run the risk of his presence not being BIG ENOUGH for cap. i mean i have all the faith in marvel that they'll audition people and choose the best based on that. so when the role is finally cast you will hear no qualms from me. only hope that he does well!
I wish brad pitt was younger because TO ME he'd be perfect. lemme see if i can help you understand my view, brad pitt freakin IS captain america already! haha he helps out countless people accross the world with donations, is banging arguably the hottest woman alive, and is more famous and loved than almost anyone else in the world, i mean i can't think of one person who hates brad pitt and if you do then thats a you problem! again, he's too old, but the point im trying to make is if you can get an actor, a-list/b-list whatever, who's personality mirrors that of what cap is to the marvel u than that's all i want!:) (or if he can at least ACT like it)

Also you're remark about "..JOHNNY DEPP IS THIS MOVIE THAT DOESN'T MATTER CUZ IT'S JOHNNY DEPP..." while hilarious and correct i might add, might actually help international audiences get into the theatre. im not saying people in other countries won't see it if an a-lister isn't in it. but it couldn't hurt.
CorndogBurglar - 1/4/2010, 3:59 PM
i hate the title of your article..."everyone here thinks..."

sorry, but i think he is a terrible choice for cap, personally. although there ARE a LOT of people that think he would be good. i don't think he's right for the exact reasons you said...he doesn't have the presence or look to pull off cap, plain and simple.
vanillabear - 1/4/2010, 4:34 PM
thats what i like to hear ozy
BillyBlack - 1/4/2010, 6:41 PM
I'm with the "No to Damon for Cap" campaign.

Sounds like just about this whole thread is feeling the same. And fk Sam Worthington while we're at it.

I'm for Alexander Skarsgard, have been since jump.

He's got all the qualities you are talking about, and in spite of him being Norweigen, his accent is flawless.
And now the obigatory photo.

Photobucket

Personally, I don't give a rusty trombone if he's not American. If an American can play Sherlock Homes, I think we can get over this. It's about getting the best person for the part, not the American that comes the closest. Just my opinion of course.
StrangerX - 1/4/2010, 7:11 PM
If all else fails I would go with Chris Pine
@ Bllly Black u may be right.
BillyBlack - 1/4/2010, 7:28 PM
StrangemannX

Much like your image, Chris Pine is not available.
Ryden - 1/4/2010, 8:13 PM
I have to disagree. Damon can pull of scary, but I've never really thought of Cap as a scary character in the first place though. Theres absolutley nothing wrong with Damon as CAP, I mean the guy is a top-noth actor and has the look.

@MTL- A manly face and you want Ryan McPartly? Handsome and you want Mark Valley? Cap doesn't NEED to be handsome, and I'm not gay or anything, but Damon's not a bad looking guy.
NERO - 1/5/2010, 3:03 AM
I agree that Damon is not the best pick for Cap, but I think you need to flesh out your argument a little.

My own reasoning is that I think Matt is too well known; I personally would have a hard time disassociating him since Matt is essentially Matt in every movie he's always Matt Damon to me. He is a good actor, don't get me wrong, but I've never lost the guy in a role. When I watched Iron Man I literally forgot I was watching RDJ and just thought of him as Tony Stark or Heath Ledger was the Joker. Damon has never pulled that off for me. So to me it will always be Matt dressed up as Cap, not Steve Rogers. I want that quality in the actor that plays Cap. It may take a lesser known actor to do that since there will be less automatic comparison in my mind as I watch the movie. Does that make any sense?

Secondly, Matt is a very political guy, and I really don't want the actor that plays Cap to bring that to the table, I want him to seem like the beacon of America, not one party or another. It alienates the image at times and I'm a guy that holds my politics close to the vest (usually) and people that wear them on their sleeve aggravate me. What's it to you who I voted for, and I don't care about your freakin' bumper sticker telling me who you voted for, its none of my business, though it may determine whether or not I flip you off for driving like an idiot. HA! Who am I kidding I'm flippin' you off anyway. I have a conceal permit and a SIG P245 strapped in a holster under my steering column if you get fresh. I know, I know those are stupid personal reasons, but they hold true for me.

Lastly, I just don't see Damon as Cap. Is he good as Bourne? Oh, yeah. Could he be good as Cap? Maybe. Would I pitch a bitch if he were to play Cap? Nah. Would I rather it be someone else? Yeah. There are other factors too; age, the fact that Matt gets very broad and looks stumpy when he really pumps up, like in Invictus. His face would look odd in the mask... all odd nit-picky reasons that just add up for me.

The sad thing is if you ask me who I would like to play Cap I really don’t have a good answer. If this weren’t an origin story I would love to see Mark Valley, but he is really too old for this tale. I’m just hoping the casting is good and I don’t envy the casting director on this movie one bit.
NERO - 1/5/2010, 3:11 AM
As for my only unwavering requirement for Cap Casting; I want the actor that plays Cap to be an American. No offence to the Aussies with Worthington or the Brits with any of their actors, but certain characters really just need to be played by the people they represent, especially if the character is meant to be a symbol of those people. I would be disappointed if Captain Britain or Union Jack were played by an American or an Aussie as an example. Hell, I really wanted Thor to be played by a Norwegian, Dutchmen, or Swede.
lc - 1/5/2010, 8:33 AM
sam for cap more like sam for crap
god its only goin to get worse init lol
OdinsBeard - 1/5/2010, 9:23 AM
nerosday@ what about the american downey jr playing the brit sherlock holmes? idc one way or the other that movie didn't interest me at all it, just offering up some disscussion:)

also, i skimmed the comments so i feel pretty safe saying this: Im so glad no one on here has gone with the 'Team America' "mat damon" tagline! i don't even get that joke. is it because of what nerosay is saying? that he's only mat damon in all of his movies? becuase i disagree with that, also it's just not funny. i have a friend who everytime i mention damon's name he goes 'mat damon' in that stupid voice and thinks it's hilarious and hates mat damon because of that....

BillyBlack@ it's possible that while sarsgard was audtitioning for the thor role they could've seen something Cap-like in him and very-well could've already cast him in the role! im under the impression they have already cast cap and we don't know it yet. gives him time to tone up
Jackwagon - 1/6/2010, 10:04 AM
Why do I get the sneaky suspicion that Mark-Paul Gosselaar will be playing Cap.
Jackwagon - 1/6/2010, 10:05 AM
It should be the Michelin Man. Have any of you seen how he took down the Red Pump?
TheDrizzle - 1/7/2010, 12:21 PM
This article is right, but for the wrong reasons. I don't see Damon as having the acting chops to pull off this role. I don't think he has the range to be the leader that cap has to be. Not to mention the internal turmoil that Cap has to face by watching American soldiers die all around him. And yeah, he doesn't look young enough anyway.

Lee@ I can't see Leo as Cap either. He's a far better actor than Damon, but there's no way I could see him getting big enough for the role.

At this point, I'm throwing my support to either Jensen Ackles or Sam Worthington. Neither of those actors would upset me, though I think Ackles looks the part more than Worthington. But at least everyone is off the Gay-son Lewis bandwagon. LOL
Layperson - 1/7/2010, 12:23 PM
I'm not necessarily Pro-Damon or Anti-Damon. Personally, I don't see him taking the role, that being said, In terms of acting ability and look. I'm with Tyler on this one, height is not a problem...just ask Tom Cruise.

Personally, I'd like to see a big name actor take the part. I understand the downsides, but I think that it worked in Incredible Hulk, it worked in Ironman, why not in Cap'? If the ultimate goal is to make an Avengers movie we need someone who can share the screen with R.Downy Jr. and possibly Ed Norton (though his inclusion seems unlikely so far).

Also consider that they are only making 1 Cap' movie before the eventual Avengers flick, and 2 Ironman movies. Who is the audience naturally going to be more familiar with? Captain America is-more or less-the leader of the Avengers, if (for whatever reason)his solo movie doesn't have a protagonist that can draw and keep a crowd in the way that RDJr. does for Ironman, then no one is going to take the Avengers seriously.

In a perfect world we'd see 2 Ironman movies, 2 (legit) Hulk movies, 2 Thor movies, and 2 Cap movies. Why they don't do this, I'm not sure, I'm not a film expert. Picking someone solely on looks is a mistake, while the actor should bear some resemblance to Steve Rogers, remember, age, height, build, eye and hair color, can all be manipulated on screen. An ability to convincingly lead the Avengers both on screen and with the audience is vastly more important.

Again, we can't look at this as one movie, it's a crossover; crossovers only work if they have unbelievable writing and character balance. The presence of RDJr with 2 ironman movies tips that balance heavily...an actor like Damon would help to balance that out.

that's just the opinion of a Layperson-

MATT DAMON FOR BARRY ALLEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Chachie - 1/8/2010, 1:17 PM
For Capt America, you need top notch good looks, huge star power and someone who can achieve the body type.

Brad Pitt IS Captain America. (But they'll never get him.)

Edit- Layperson is 100% right, which is why Brad as Cap works on all levels. (But they'll never get him.)
TheColonel - 1/18/2010, 7:11 PM
