Bill Murray: "Ghostbusters 3 is Dead"

The star of the first two Ghostbusters films says that the much anticipated third film is "dead."

In a recent interview with GQ Magazine, Bill Murray discussed the future of the rumored third film in the Ghostbusters franchise. He had this to say:

"It's all a bunch of crock. It's a crock...
Harold Ramis said, Oh, I've got these guys, they write on The Office, and they're really funny. They're going to write the next Ghostbusters. And they had just written this movie that he had directed...Year One.
Well, I never went to see Year One, but people who did, including other Ghostbusters, said it was one of the worst things they had ever seen in their lives. So that dream just vaporized. That was gone. But it's the studio that really wants this thing. It's a franchise. It's a franchise, and they made a whole lot of money on Ghostbusters."

Well, I guess that answers that question. However, studios are a greedy group and it would not surprise me the least bit to see them go ahead with a new group of actors or better yet...you guessed it, a reboot. As a fan of the original films, I'd say just drop the idea and move on, but I just don't see that happening anytime soon. Time will tell on this one I guess.

Leave it. I wanted a Ghostbusters 3 until I started reading the shite they were thinking of doing. Sod that. I'm happy with the original 2, thank you very much.
jimoakley666 - 7/20/2010, 2:33 PM
By the way, brilliant of Bill Murray to be so blunt and to the point. I also didn't see year one but heard it was dire arse juice.
ROMACK - 7/20/2010, 3:05 PM
Yeah they need to leave this one alone and not leave a bad taste in everyones mouths with a Ghostbusters movie that will nevver live up to the originals. I bet they wanted to do this shite in 3D as well.
AlexDeLarge87 - 7/20/2010, 3:24 PM
Ghostbusters all ready have enough sequels if you ask me!
They are an animated series called The Real Ghostbusters and The Extreme Ghostbusters! And they are great! We dont need anything else!
DogsOfWar - 7/20/2010, 3:29 PM
Sounds like a little friction between Bill & Harold. Say it ain't so!
Talontd - 7/20/2010, 3:33 PM
I kinda liked the idea of the kid all grown up and Bill Murray as a ghost....oh well...
Creature - 7/20/2010, 3:39 PM
The movie should have been a stand alone in the first place.
comicb00kguy - 7/20/2010, 3:41 PM
It's better to leave this franchise back in the 80's where it belongs than to try to resurrect it and wind up ruining it.

The first one still has the single funniest sight gag I ever saw. Let's leave it as a treasured memory of the 80s.

....I'm gonna go crawl into a whiskey bottle, now....and cry my little heart out.
BillyBlack - 7/20/2010, 3:56 PM
Well at least Year One had some sort of positive impact.

It's been on cable all month. I stopped on it a few times... briefly. Just terrible.

Looks like I'm gonna have to go to Hollywood and clean house. A bottle of whiskey and a bag of knives.

I still say he's giving us the red herring, i still have 100% faith this movie WILL happen, if i had to put all my fictional gambling chips in on one film, this is it, i just want GB3 to happen, regardless, because to me personally no movie matters as much as this one..
Suffertree - 7/20/2010, 4:02 PM
I think we could've all gathered that Year One sucked based on the fact that it had Jack Black in it.
asher1485 - 7/20/2010, 4:05 PM
I hate the mentality that a bad sequel ruins a franchise ghostbusters 2 wasnt as good as the first. if the internet and this site were around when 2 came out everyone would be crying about how it ruined everything blah blah blah
Bandrews1 - 7/20/2010, 4:06 PM
I new this would happen.
Superzero - 7/20/2010, 4:09 PM
OK I have a serious gripe about the posting of this article under the headline: "Ghostbusters 3 Is Dead"
If you actually read the WHOLE article on GQ Murray never says he's is NOT doing it, that it will NEVER happen. He pretty much just says that the writers wrote a movie that sucked and he and the other busters were not enthused with those guys WRITING it. Nowhere in this article does he say "I'm not going to be in this movie." or "This movie will never be made" and after that he goes on to talk about Zombieland and freaking Garfield. He's stating that, for the most part, he'd do it if it was something he LIKED, but he's not a fan of the current script.
If you're gonna "report" off of another author's piece just make sure you report what was said in the RIGHT context.
The GQ article is an excellent piece on Murray btw...I'm with him on GBIII as long as it honors the original idea and is the EXACT OPPOSITE of the second one I'd see it. Otherwise let it go.

this was just snippets of that interview, here is another link with a little more that was posted:

Superzero - 7/20/2010, 4:13 PM
Oh and one more thing: having your headline look like this:

BILL MURRAY: "GHOSTBUSTERS 3 IS DEAD"

Is you making it look like a quote from Murray himself. He never utters that line AT ALL in the entire 4 page article. So it's for the most part hit whoring and lying.
GusGalaxy - 7/20/2010, 4:18 PM
i agree with superzero, he never said that, so i have no idea why that would be used as the title of the article or headline.. also, i usually keep my mouth shut when people relentlessly bash movies and sequels being made from different franchises, but this is something i personally stand for so it pisses me off a little that this is getting bashed as well, i just don't want GB3 haters overpowering the real fans who genuinely want it to happen, like myself, it's not fair, but i do respect that everyone is entitled to their opinion.. so, technically, "Ghostbusters 3 is NOT dead"..
Joker08 - 7/20/2010, 4:20 PM
This is just a bunch of crock. They're trying to sell sodas, plain and simple. I've been watching these reports since morning, and Ive seen twelve soda commercials so far... TWELVE!
SuperSpiderMan5778 - 7/20/2010, 4:35 PM
murray has always been the pessimist about the third installment. he doesn't know sh1t. he said he's down to do it then he says its a crock? what the fawk are we suppose to believe? come on Columbia..."We're ready to believe you"
Fumbles - 7/20/2010, 4:59 PM
I view the game as the last part of the Ghostbuster's franchise, and I can live happily with that.
Superzero - 7/20/2010, 5:09 PM
Christopher Nolan: "Batman 3 is Dead..."
"...ly close to going into production!"

LOL couldn't help it! Thanks Gus! When the first one came out I was like 5 and vividly remember watching it from the back of my parent's station wagon at the Drive-In, remember those? I had all of the action figures and 2 of the proton pack toys and even a toy ghost trap. We loved using my dad's beat up beta-max camera to make our own Ghostbusters movies. I am really in love with the idea of Venkman as a ghost and would love to see this get made but only in the love and spirit(I love puns) of the original! Anyway everyone else besides Murray could use the paycheck!
ecksmanfan - 7/20/2010, 5:38 PM
@Superzero & Gus- I apologize about the title, I meant it more as a pun (dead...ghostbusters...no?) and it didn't com across that way. I'd change it but I can't access the article anymore for some reason. Sorry for the confusion.

As for "bashing," I'd like to expand on my comments above. I'd rather see them drop the idea of a third film than to put a film out just to make money off it. DO what they can to bring the original group back and put together a good story. Don't just throw something together and call it Ghostbusters.
Deathlok - 7/20/2010, 5:54 PM
I don't understand what's keeping Dan Akroyd and Harold Ramis from writing the third film. They wrote the first two movies and they apparently had enough time to write a Ghostbusters video game which is 10 times as much dialogue and detail, yet they wanted to entrust the third movie to a newer group of writers from The Office. Am I missing something here? Do they really have that much on their plates right now that they can't put together a script for this?
DeadPoolLax - 7/20/2010, 6:02 PM
i was kind of looking forward to this. oh well.
TennesseeJed - 7/20/2010, 6:51 PM
I chatted briefly with Ernie Hudson recently and he said that there is a script for GB3 but not everyone in the core group liked it. He specifically mentioned "Billy" (very cool moment, by the way)... in that Bill Murray shrugged at the most recent script. I think his comment was something like, "Billy's perception of good is different than most people," which sounds pretty accurate and what I'd assume.

He also said, however, that the last time he talked to "Sigorney" and "Danny Akroyd" (equally cool!), they were both in. I got the feeling that he liked the script too... hedid mention the hesitation over Year One, oddly enough. But basically, it was the script issue... and he did say that last time he heard directly from Murray was that if the story is good enough, he would be in too.... whatever that is worth to y'all.

I, for one, grew up reciting EVERY LINE from GB1 at single digits in age, so yes, I would love to see part 3 happen, but I agree that they all have to want it. He did NOT mention Rick Moranis... where the hell has THAT guy been?? Hehe... I bet if they did do it, he'd come outta' retirement. I'dhope so. Need that Louis Tully fix!

Ven0m - 7/20/2010, 7:31 PM
They just need to do GB3 with the original cast or no one at all. And they all need to get their head out of their ass time still clicking and they arent getting younger.
Vital - 7/20/2010, 8:39 PM
Are you [frick]ing kidding me?!!!!!!! Why does stupid ass movies get greenlit but I can't have Ghostbusters 3?! What horseshit this is.
Pooh - 7/20/2010, 9:15 PM
I'm disappointed. I don't see why they can't make another Ghostbusters movie that's as good as the original. So what if Bill Murray's balls are hanging down to his knees.
GusGalaxy - 7/20/2010, 9:20 PM
@ecksmanfan it's fine, you just scared me with the title! lol i understand the pun you were going for now too, with the venkman ghost idea.. no harm done, but i have every bit of movie faith banking on this, so that's why i was so jumpy earlier, and @superzero, i totally agree with you on all that, i was 3 or 5 when i first saw and fell in love with the franchise, the toys! the mythology and backstory! the character development! lol also, once i got into my teens, wrestling became another passion, and made ghostbusters feel nostalgic to me, but still i feel it's always been a strong part of my life.. i would say my influences in life are always 25% ghostbusters and all things paranormal including ghost hunting, 25% NIN and my own music as well, 25% pro wrestling and my ambitions in the ring, and 25% family guy and my comedy animations.. so, a good good quarter of my life is inspired by ghostbusters.. ghostbusters and KISS opened many doors for me, they helped shape who i am as a person, so that's why i show more attention then usual when these articles come up, so no offense to anyone, no harm done or given, and it's really good to see a lot of people as passionate as i am about this! ;)
RemiMartini - 7/20/2010, 11:20 PM
I respect murray for doing this. Sure I wanted to see another movie but definitely not from the team who brought us "Year One"

Keep doin your Wes Anderson movies Bill. Your doing just fine
odie00 - 7/20/2010, 11:33 PM
yeah year one blew i really didnt find it funnny, im not a fan of michael cera anyways
ChrisMc - 7/21/2010, 12:11 AM
I thought 'Men in Black' was supposed to be and marketed to be the 'new' Ghostbusters????
whatshisnameMD - 7/21/2010, 1:15 AM
If your gonna do it, you need Murray, Aykroyd, Ramis, Hudson, Moranis and Annie Potts. Keep this away from all of this new talent and keep it original. Dont go 3D use crap special effects (it's not avatar). Stay away from gimmicks. You do all of that then the film will turn out perfect.
marvel72 - 7/21/2010, 3:02 AM
shame....i want gremlins 3.
JustinMSalvato - 7/21/2010, 7:15 AM
Jahozafat is getting really ticked off! I want Ghostbusters 3!

LancerEvo - 7/21/2010, 11:35 AM
Y'know, if people really want a Ghostbusters 3 that bad... play the game! It follows the movies to a "T" and trust me, when you play this game you'll actually feel like you're bustin' ghosts alongside Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson :D. I just finished this game last week and I have to say I loved every minute of it, especially all the Easter Eggs of the first 2 movies you find along the way :D
darque13 - 7/27/2010, 5:18 AM
i think ghostbusters should be handled in either 2 ways and it doesnt have the "3" at the end of the title...A) they should do a reboot, maybe give it a more serious and darker tone (or maybe not, cld go either way, altho i dont know how serious one can be w a goofy looking proton pack on their back lol) or B) make it a continuation with new up and coming GB without the OG cast with exception of Dan Ackroyd.
deraj36 - 7/28/2010, 11:42 PM
While he obviously doesn't seem optimistic about it, he never actually said it's "dead"

And Year One did suck. A whole lot.
odie00 - 8/7/2010, 11:33 AM
well bill murray is kind of an ass from what i hear, i dont think he wanted anything to do with the movie. i mean you know how long it took to finally get him on board for the game. either bill is still the man
