The famed director of the Hellboy movies as well as classics such as Cronos, Pans Labrynth and the Orphanage says he will never again film in his home country of Mexico because of his fathers kidnapping 10 years ago.
Del Toro has expressed to the press that his fathers kidnapping 10 years ago has left him fearing for his life. His fathers kidnappers were never all caught and his family recieved death threats for some time after his release.
Del Toro says that while filming in Mexico his daily routines become public knowledge, causing him to fear for his safety. He calls it a 'forced exile' and is deeply saddened by the thought of never filming in Mexico again.
According to the article, Mexico has one of the highest kidnapping rates in the world.
This is sad news to think that a man cannot make his movies in the place where he grew up and created some of his best work. Lucky for us however he is now living in New Zealand, home of the Hobbit.
Is anyone else overexcited for him to be directing the Hobbit and for Peter Jackson to still be on board?
