EDITORIAL: Why I May Have Been Wrong About X-Men: First Class Being The Worst CBM Ever!

Last August, I wrote an editorial declaring that X-Men: First Class would undoubtedly be the worst comic book movie ever. Now, I'm beginning to think the opposite. Find out why, along with my take on the trailerand more, here...

I hate to say it. I really do. I'm actually looking forward to seeing X-Men: First Class! Good God, I think I just threw up in my mouth a little... As I'm sure you all must surely know, I've been one of the biggest haters towards the movie. When it was announced that Matthew Vaughn would be directing, and that it would be set in the 1960s, I was fine. "Could Fox finally be about to make a good comic book movie?" I wondered. It was Bryan Singer's revelation that it would not follow the original five and some seemingly dubious casting and character decisions that had me all but ready to burn Fox's headquarters down though. Apart from one or two decent enough decisions (Michael Fassbender as Magneto!) I could find nothing to like about X-Men: First Class. it was truly shaping up in my eyes to be one awful [frick]ing movie. And it was at that time, I decided to write a rather controversial editorial.

What was that editorial?

Why X-Men: First Class Will Probably Be The Worst CBM Ever!

Extreme, but that really was how I felt. Hell, I still do to a large extent. So what changed my mind!? Well, those unexciting set photos sure as hell did nothing to alter my opinion. The only thing the really assured me of was that Vaughn had successfully made a convincing looking period piece. To be fair, I thought the costumes were good (or at least a million times better than the leather monstrosities of the first three films) and Magneto's helmet was PERFECT. I was feeling a little more positively towards the film perhaps, but still had little to no interest in seeing Fox butcher any more of my favourite comic book characters. Then, the trailer was released. And all of a sudden, I was suddenly looking forward to X-Men: First Class as much as Thor, Green Lantern and Captain America: The First Avenger! Phew, I feel like I need to take a shower after confessing to such a thing! After all, we're talking about the same studio that made movies like Fantastic Four, Elektra and...well...every other bad comic book movie you can think of! I do realise that it's far too early to suddenly declare this latest effort as being better, based only on a teaser trailer and handful of impressive interviews with the cast. Only seeing it on June 2 (gotta love living in the UK) will ultimately decide whether it's any good or not. I do however think it's important to note that I no longer think it will be as bad as any of us either predicted or expected.

That trailer had everything in it that I always wanted to see in an X-Men movie. I hated Singer's two and Ratner's equally as much. (I won't go into why as I've done that plenty of times before elsewhere) Vaughn however has seemingly managed to find the perfect balance of politics and action, just as the comic books always have. The Blackbird scenes should be truly epic, while the rest of the action looked like it had been translated directly from the comic books themselves. (at least I could see nothing as lame as the Wolverine vs. Wolverine fight from the first one) And as much as I like Ian McKellen, how great is it to have a Magneto who actually looks menacing rather than one who looks like he should be in a retirement home? McAvoy also impressed me as Xavier, while they've nailed the looks of Beast, Emma Frost and Mystique equally well.

The problem that remains, is the drastic changes from the source material. I'm pretty sure that whatever the movie ends up being like, I'll find it hard to get over them. The fact is, it's out of our hands. However much we all complain, studios like Fox will continue making these movies. Why? They make a crap load of cash. We can talk about boycotting these films as much as we like, and perhaps the critics will dislike this as much as they have the past few. Even so, over two million people signed up to the Facebook page in anticipation of the trailer reveal. The response from non comic book fans? Pretty damn positive. It even changed my mind and many other fanboys, as you can see from this editorial, which is pretty astonishing considering that I once flat out refused to go and watch the movie. What I'm saying is that it might just be worth giving X-Men: First Class a chance. There's no denying that it will not be a good adaptation of the source material. But maybe, just maybe, they'll do enough right with the characters and story to make a decent film.

Recent reports have seemingly hinted at them introducing characters like Cyclops and Jean Grey in the sequels. While this is far from how the comic books did it, we could really be in for something great here. It's easy to hate Fox. Everything they do is seemingly another reason for us to do just that. But perhaps it's time to have faith in them doing the right thing. They've hired Matthew Vaughn for this, and the brilliant Darren Aronofsky for The Wolverine. Take a look at what we know about Captain America and Thor. Both of those are seemingly completely original stories not based on any specific stories. Steve will be a part of the USO. Bucky will have no mask. A powerless Thor lands on Earth and calls himself Donald Blake. Pretty far from the comics, but Marvel Studios earned our trust with Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk. Maybe X-Men: First Class is doing the same. If for one am looking forward to it. And I NEVER thought I'd say THAT.

SuperSpiderMan5778 - 2/24/2011, 2:13 PM
didn't wanna read all that but you will be one of the many who hated and then later will be shut the fawked up once this movie makes u butter your popcorn with your own geekgasm. haha jk man but yeah this movie is gonna rock.
fightingfoo93 - 2/24/2011, 2:15 PM
It's kind of a dick thing to say a movie is crap before it's out. Now I can't say I'm to excited to see this movie but I'm not going to say it's the worst CBM ever.
Frecks - 2/24/2011, 2:16 PM
Josh :( How could you!
imnotwearinghockeypants - 2/24/2011, 2:16 PM
You're wrong because there's no way it'll be worse than the Trifecta of Hellish CBM's that is Ghostrider, Daredevil and Catwoman. And don't try to defend Daredevil, I'd rather have watched a pile of dogshit dry on a sidewalk for two hours. Exhibit A: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJlwo9iZO-w
HavocT - 2/24/2011, 2:16 PM
How do I "hit" a jump?
Comedian03 - 2/24/2011, 2:17 PM
I have to agree with you Josh, I hated everything about this movie and while I'm still not jumping for joy over it, I've started to become a little more interested in it.
CraptainAmerica - 2/24/2011, 2:17 PM
Tipping my hat to you for admitting it. Most would just change their minds and say "I thought it would be good all along".

Always bed to see if the proof us in the pudding IMO
SwedishSkinJer - 2/24/2011, 2:21 PM
Your comment about Ian McKellen bugs me somewhat, even though it wasn't meant to be even negative. Yes, even though he looked old (although not every elderly person is automatically frail or in a nursing home...), I didn't find anything particularly wrong with this, as it's IAN MCKELLEN. He brought gravitas and class to Magneto and the intelligence that his voice implies when it reaches its most dramatic heights (his speech in X-Men 3 about mutants representing the true cure) is peerless. I hope Fassbender is able to live up to his performance because Sir Ian set one hell of a standard.

IMO, Ian's portrayal was more layered than generic, growling menace. His VOICE implies intelligence and menace; it's not all about physicality.
MovieMann - 2/24/2011, 2:21 PM
I don't understand how people can label something as the "WORST MOVIE EVER" before they have even seen it.
BezierCurve - 2/24/2011, 2:22 PM
You could summarize by saying "I haven't seen it yet, so can't judge it merits at all".
CaptainOtter - 2/24/2011, 2:24 PM
Eh, I still dont have big expectations. The trailer was kinda "meh". All it had was a speech from JFK and shots of the entire cast. I think Michael Fassbender could do some great things as Magneto, but McAvoy didn't impress me. The trailer wasnt bad, it just had little in it.

What bothers me even more is the rushed production process. They're barely getting it together in time, and whenever people walk on and off of movies it's never a good sign. While this doesn't prove the movie will be bad, it's not a good sign.

But the big thing is that I didn't need this movie. We've had three X-Men movies. I don't need a prequel.
luckylu - 2/24/2011, 2:24 PM
maybe electra has this one beat but it will still be one of the worst attempts.
SwedishSkinJer - 2/24/2011, 2:25 PM
Well, as wary as I still am about this movie, MovieMann, I don't think it will be nearly as bad as, say, Catwoman or Fantastic Four. I trust Vaughn more than no-names that had little experience with action (Catwoman's director and Tim Story).
Xandera - 2/24/2011, 2:27 PM
Kudos Josh for having the balls to admit that... but I am still on the fence...

Guys, check out the Eleventh Sub-chapter of WHITE FIRE... Unforeseen Battle!

White Fire
LP4 - 2/24/2011, 2:27 PM
I've been excited about this film from the start even back since the first leaked photos that were "unexciting" for other people perhaps but not to me. This and Spider-Man are the only 2 CBMs I've been excited for.

Brashlight - 2/24/2011, 2:28 PM
Great stuff JW, it takes some serious cajones to write that up. I also appreciate your approach to not completely jump on the band wagon. Let’s remember, trailers are meant to make movies look spectacular and there are way too many examples of trailers looking awesome and the movies sucking donkey dong!!! But with that said I am definitely excited to see this movie!
EditNinja - 2/24/2011, 2:30 PM
Too often we're spoilt for choice with 3 default opinion-options: LOVE - HATE - MEH. Unfortunately, none of these options require deep thought or analysis.

Hell, it wouldn't surprise me if it ends up being more popular than Green Lantern.

Nice editorial, BTW.
marvel72 - 2/24/2011, 2:30 PM
it ain't changed my mind, its an insult to the source material.

the trailer confirmed that for me.
Xandera - 2/24/2011, 2:30 PM
HA HA HA TEABAG!!!!
Ven0m - 2/24/2011, 2:32 PM
You werent wrong with your first article bud. Justify it to yourself all you want this movie will blow.
the1egend1ives - 2/24/2011, 2:33 PM
@JoshW

I've never been the biggest X-Men fan, but I can understand why people would be frustrated with the creative liberties that Fox has taken with these films. That being said, what was so bad about Ian McKellen's Magneto? Was it his age? To be perfectly honest, if Magneto lived during the Holocaust then I would expect him to look as old as he was portrayed in the movies. The reason I ask why you didn't like him in the first three films was because I always thought that Magneto, Professor X, and the relationship between the two was the one thing that Fox nailed absolutely perfectly.
Ranger14 - 2/24/2011, 2:33 PM
I haven't said the movie is gong to be crap. I am just not interested in the movie because of everything I know of it to date. I am not interested in going back to the past and seeing the "love story" between Magneto and Xavier. I am not interested in seeing teeny Xmen. I am not interested in hearing Cyclops isn't in First Class because he would be too young, but his younger brother plays a part in the movie. Simply not interested in their lack of continuity, which they said they would have to make this a legitimate prequel. They're just going to start the Xmen over again folks, this is just a way to try to not make it look like a reboot. Maybe a rental for me.
patriautism - 2/24/2011, 2:34 PM
The worst CBM ever is still and will always remain, David Hasselhoff's made for tv movie, Nick Fury: Agent of Shield.. I still love it though!!

TheUnHasseledHoff - 2/24/2011, 2:34 PM
these "EDITORIAL's" are f*#ing retarded... seriously...

"Why I was wrong for calling a movie terrible before it came out."
"Why I won't see a movie opening weekend based on a 2min trailer."
"Is this random rumor an actual fact that means that this theory I just made up is the plot of a movie."
"Why this movie will be terrible b/c the 30 second teaser didn't sell me."

Editorials are typically supposed to represent the views of the entire publication they're represented within... not one random fanboy who wants to [female dog]... you guys need to learn the difference between an informed opinion piece and gut-reaction fanboy rants based on 30-second television spots and speculation...
Xandera - 2/24/2011, 2:36 PM
Feel better after that Hissy Fit TheUnHasseledHoff?
Illuminatus - 2/24/2011, 2:36 PM
Whats the point of this article? You changed your opinion, zip a dee do da. I normally like your stuff Josh, but why is this front page news? And a trailer, some interviews with cast members, and some lame ass set photos are what changed your mind? Hmm..
CherryBomb - 2/24/2011, 2:39 PM

I'm really excited for this!
It may deviate from the comics, but I love the casting. (:
RorMachine - 2/24/2011, 2:40 PM
Ah Josh, I never say I told you so..;) hehe, just kiddin. I respect that you have the stones to change your mind about it.
TheUnHasseledHoff - 2/24/2011, 2:41 PM
i wouldn't categorize it as a hissy fit, but i feel better yes. that is a post based on many many weeks of reading frustrating "editorials" based on speculatory reactions. i think it would be interesting if anyone who posts things like "______ Movie is going to suck" is held accountable when the film comes out and they actually like it, or they just weren't allowed to see it period.

the fact of the matter is... you guys have no clue how the movie is going to turn out... and you're still going to go see it... or download it and watch it.
TheUnHasseledHoff - 2/24/2011, 2:43 PM
@Illuminatus... my point exactly... this is not front page news... who cares if Josh W. is going to see any movie?

you basically showed the idiocy of your last editorial by posting that you were wrong...
luckylu - 2/24/2011, 2:49 PM
@tea- exactly. i knew not to go see electra, ghostrider, or punisher war zone. and i know not to see this one. like marvel 72 said- its a slap in the face to the source material
MisterJay - 2/24/2011, 2:57 PM
u bunch of loosers...whit nothing to do but critice things that u can't even dream to make it better..... wait the movie is released....then u can talk your shit....damm...ima character designer...i said the movie could be good... and the prejudge is a double side sword....so i hope they shut your mouth and give a good movie ...why not....:/ just wait to see it... bunch of nerdy, non xperts critics xD
Illuminatus - 2/24/2011, 2:59 PM
@Joker13 How do you know we arent "critics"? You dont know any of us, dont make the assumption. And by the way, if youre coming on this site, youre just as much a nerd as we are.
NickKaseAKAthePieEATERxGETIT - 2/24/2011, 3:00 PM
Great editorial Josh, I agree and am looking forward to Fist Ass, despite hating it before the trailer ..
superpooper - 2/24/2011, 3:01 PM
I've had a deep hatred for all the previous X films (wolverine included) and that will never change, but I don't see this one being as bad yet. You can't expect a film to perfectly adhere to continuity. All the "committed haters" point to that as their biggest gripe but then praise it in other films so that argument is meaningless. Don't wanna hear it. My biggest gripe with the last films was the casting. None of the X-men were properly cast, that is except for possibly Patrick Stewart. Hugh Jackman sucks ass. He doesn't even resemble Wolverine. I don't mind playing with the timeline a bit as long as it still makes sense. I hate that Cyclops was younger and not so much the leader in the last films, not too mention that he dies! Aside from Havok being Scott's younger brother in this film, I'm pretty impressed with what I've seen so far. The rushed production will probably show, but I still want to see it. Can't possibly be as bad as Captain America is going to be.
MisterJay - 2/24/2011, 3:04 PM
@iluminatus....well this site is comicbook movies....right? ...not bunch of girls crying about dresses becouse they doesnt r what theyr spect...-.-' .....and im not against nerds....-.- i use to have fun whitth then in high school xD....but im against the assumption like u said :) ....so and by the way i like comics and comicbook movies...cause im a comic autor...im character designer and i like this movies...i think they have a lot of potencial...im a real fan...so im just saying...just give them a shot!!
Brashlight - 2/24/2011, 3:05 PM
Tea@ hopefully someone will enjoy it until that travesty befalls us!
Illuminatus - 2/24/2011, 3:05 PM
@superpooper "Committed hater"?? More like people who have actually read the comics. What have you seen so far? A teaser trailer and a few pointless set photos. How do you know Captain America is going to be bad? You havent seen it. But you suspect that First Class will be better? You havent seen First Class either. You have contradicted yourself, therefore, your opinion is invalid.
P862010 - 2/24/2011, 3:06 PM
anyone who thoguht this owuld be a bad comic book movie because a couple characters are not in is quite delusional
Illuminatus - 2/24/2011, 3:06 PM
@Joker13 Get a spell check/grammar check on your computer please. I really dont think you even answered any of my questions in that "comment".
80sFace - 2/24/2011, 3:11 PM
I'm with Joker13: too much speculation based on nothing, now a reversal based on not much more. JW, not to be critical, but it's premature to reverse opinions. What happens if the movie sucks? Will we get a 3rd editorial saying you knew it all along? It'd be nice to not make judgments until there's a finished product to judge.

Joker, we're all nerds here, and some of us are really, really angry - I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's due to a lack of sex. With another person. That you're not paying for. It'd be nice to have a civilized debate, but it ain't gonna happen until all of us are getting laid consistenly! To quote Rick "Nature Boy" Flair: I like my women with full sweaters and empty heads. Wooooooooo!!! (sorry Black Widow)
MARV3L - 2/24/2011, 3:14 PM
I'm sorry but they have far from nailed beast!
Illuminatus - 2/24/2011, 3:14 PM
@80sFace Joker13 refuses to admit that he is in fact a nerd. He also cant admit that he does not have any logical points or arguments to make, and I dont know why.
JoshWilding - 2/24/2011, 3:15 PM
Well, thanks to everyone who neither insulted me or found it necessary to [female dog] about one of us evil editors moving an editorial to the main page! :) However, I do of course appreciate the constructive feedback from the majority of you guys - I've been sitting on this editorial for a while, and figured that a fairly slow news day like this one would be an ok day to post it. I mean, you'd think that after posting over 200 news articles this year alone, that putting ONE editorial on the main page about a subject I feel extremely passionate about (and thought would start an interesting discussion) would not be a big deal! Ah well, "[frick] the haters" as LEE would say.
IronicMan - 2/24/2011, 3:16 PM
Good job, I was antsy at first too, but now I'm looking forward to this much more than GL (and about on par with Thor).
Illuminatus - 2/24/2011, 3:19 PM
Josh, I understand if that is a big achievement to you personally, but why brag about the fact that so far this year, youve posted over 200 articles? That does not make you "better" than anyone on this site.
lmind - 2/24/2011, 3:23 PM
redemption!
NextHero08 - 2/24/2011, 3:24 PM
