Talking to The Baltimore Sun, Hugo Weaving has seemingly revealed a reluctance to return to the role of the villainous Red Skull (or any other blockbuster movies) any time soon. While he doesn't specifically say he wouldn't be willing to face off against Captain America again, it doesn't exactly sound like he's desperate to either! Here is an excerpt from the report for you to judge his comments for yourselves.

Though Weaving says that such big-budget fare as "Captain America" can be a lot of fun -- not to mention lucrative -- these movies don't present the kind of acting challenges on which he thrives.

"I think I've about had enough," he says.

"I'm not sure how many more of them I'll make. It doesn't feel to me as though they've been the majority of my work, though that's probably the way it seems to most other people."


Here's hoping a big enough pay cheque from Marvel Studios would convince him to change his mind! While the Australian actor is known in some circles for acclaimed performances in the likes of Oranges and Sunshine, he's surely recognised most for his work in the Matrix and Lord of the Rings trilogies, and it would be a sad day for his fans if he were to turn his back on these sorts of films for good. He really didn't do much as Red Skull. Him and Cap didn't even have a hero/villain connection in the movie. I enjoy Hugo's work, but I won't miss him as Skull. He didn't stamp the role, he was underused, and basically hired for his name.

I still think he was sucked into the nine realms. I was hoping he would come back in Avengers 2 as part of a super villian team up. Oh well, time to call Thomas Krechmann(unless he wants to be Zemo).

He won't be away for too long if he leaves at at folks. I remember Patrick Stewart lamenting being in such big flashy movies back in the day when he was in big flashy movies. Now one gets the sense that he wouldn't mind being in another big flashy movie.
I thought Mr.Weaving was terrific As Red Skull.

I feel the connection was there if you think about it. When talking to the three German officer's Skull mentioned how Hitlerno longer concidered him to be a symbol of Aryan perfection because of his deformity. notice, this is what Rogers looks like. When Skull has him captured and is beating it up you can sense the resentment: "what makes you so special?"

A great actor but Red Skull wasn't his best. Red Skull was great, but simply because Weaving has such a high standard. It felt like he didn't even try and yet Red Skull was beyond amazing. I would love if he returned, if Skul returned of course.

There are ways to bring Red Skull back some him being dead isnt a problem. I thought Weaving's performance was very good, his accent however was not, it was more French than German.

I thought Weaving's performance was a lot of fun, and he did sound much like Werner Hertzog, so to me he nailed the accent.

I take his statement to mean that he's not signing on to any new franchises, or any tentpole films for a while. Unless he's in The Avengers, I wasn't expecting to see him as The Red Skull again for years anyway. I certainly wouldn't use him as the villain in Cap 2, if they go ahead with that. But Cap 3, set in modern day with his triumphantly evil return? That would be exciting.

He was good as the Skull but they will find another, let him go act it up as a lesbian lifesaver in some shite play.

Hope they signed him for a six movie deal.

Thats how I read it too. This interview isn't CA:TFA specific (although thats what started the question). He just says he isn't bothered on doing too many more blockbusters.

I am sure if the money was there and the role was interesting he would be Red Skull again.

Although i felt Weaving's Red Skull performance to be better than his Agent Smith, he didn't top his LOTR and V for Vendetta performances. And NONE of his performances were even anywhere near the same league as Langella's Skeletor. Hell, i'm sure Langella still can't figure out why he was so good as Skeletor since he hasn't given us anything remotely as good since.

...he was decent/good, who cares if he returns or not. i'm pretty sure if he was given more to do he would of killed it, but he wasn't and he didn't. he doesn't return...? great, someone else will do it and hopefully have a better accent.

@Bar20- it means nothing for the Hobbit films, he's already signed as Elrond for them, and filming started months ago so theres no backing out now.

I can understand where he is coming from, he did a great job as Red Skull but as most of you have said, it didn't require much acting but because Weaving is so good, he made a great villain. Personally I feel his role as Elrond is his best.

Since when did so many people hate Weaving as the Red Skull? I thought he was fantastic... I think a lot of you are just acting butt hurt that it seems he doesnt want to be in these movies anymore, and instead of saying so, making yourselves feel better by saying he sucked anyway... I would be very upset if they brought skull back and weaving said no. hopefully this is all just talk and post big budget exhaustion, and when the time comes, he signs back on.

rlkjets130- Someone actually said that he "sucked" as Red Skull? Where? I must have missed that. Truth be told, he did a great job of not [frick]ing up a highly ham & cheese character. Seriously, he has a red skull for a head and a shitty german accent. He did great concidering what he had to work with. And that's probably why he received praises when the film hit theaters. But lets be realistic, you can't possibly tell me it was his "best" performances ever. And i think the same goes for Hiddleston as Loki. He was believable as a character that could have cringed audiences to high heavens, but he wasn't anywhere near a "memorable" villain such as Nicholson's and Ledger's Jokers, Fienes' Voldemort, Langella's Skeletor, Michael Wincott's Top Dollar and James Earl Jones' Vader/Thulsa Doom. It was a good to average performance depending on the scene you're looking at.

Weaving was as perfect as it was humanly possible to be!!!

They couldn't have cast it better if they tried!
His accent was also perfect.

I'm sure he was just sucked into Asgrad. Oh yeah spoilers.
