The always reliable Devin Faraci over at Badass Digest has seemingly dropped some more hints about the direction Marvel Studios and writer/director Joss Whedon will be taking the alien invaders in come 2012's The Avengers. Still no word on their actual identity, but if the following is correct, they may not even have one!

What they’re seeing is a major battle between the Avengers and an invading alien army (as far as I know the aliens are currently unnamed, although their design does NOT match the standard Skrull design. They’re all CGI).

It's fairly obvious that the aliens will be all CGI creations due to the stunt guys being in mo-cap costumes, but the fact that they'll be "unnamed" and won't match the standard Skrull design is very interesting indeed. Does this the alien invaders will be a different take on the iconic villains or perhaps a race such as the Kree or Inhumans? It's worth remembering that Joss Whedon created the "Breakworld" aliens during his run on Astonishing X-Men, so it's not hard to imagine him coming up with something completely new for The Avengers!

STARRING:

Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America
Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man
Chris Hemsworth as Thor
Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye
Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Ramanoff/Black Widow
Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk
Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury
Tom Hiddleston as Loki

RELEASE DATE: May 4th, 2012. (US)

Them fighting in the streets with alien invaders definitely reminds me of that episode of Avengers:Earth's Mightiest Heroes with Kang the Conqueror and his invasion army. But I doubt they'll do a story of them coming from another century

don't come up with a new race, has to be a race we have in the comics already...please don't mess this up, the skrull would fit prefect, and set up alot also...

also I doubt it's the Kree. The Kree's weapons kinda look like pistols. Some of the shots I've seen almost look like the blasters are attached to their arms or are their arms, like the Chitauri. Also, remember the scenes that were leaked yesterday? Cap took a blast right to the gut at point blank range and didn't even fall down. I can't see the Kree shooting Cap with one of thieir guns and him barely taking a step back.

I'm fine with the Chitauri being used if they are a completely different alien race from the Skrulls. But not as a redesigned version of the Skrulls, that would suck.

Heh,...Lava men. Avengers #5...

Probably not a new alien threat...Whedon would twist in something recognizable for the fans. And he'd likely go "early" for inspiration. I'm thinkin' Kang....

No telling how Loki is involved.

any alien race that is featured in the comics would be fine,i'd rather they didn't just create a new race for the film.

I don't care which alien race it is. As long as the Avengers kick ass and there is a good story does it really matter? There are so many alien races in the Marvel Universe. Hell it could be the Badoon, Brood or the other 1,000+ aliens.

I think the shell of the craft looks kinda egyptian-esque. Like a Scarab. so perhaps it's Kang.

A new alien race....what a great way to make the Avengers SUCK.

Why can't directors just leave things alone, why can't they just use the correct stuff from the comics...that's the whole frikin reason that we want these movies in the first place...to see our favorite comics on the big screen not some half a@@ rendition of what some non-fan boy wants to see.

Give us Atlanteans...give us Skrulls...give us the Kree...give them all to us at the same time...just please don't make up a new alien race just because.

Wow...I've not had them much "Whine/wine" since my wedding day. I need to have some whisky.

I'm not exactly shocked that they wouldn't use green men with pointy ears or blue men as the Skrulls or Kree... I would guess that either would get a redesign, although it might possibly just be battle armor with the more familiar look inside. Whatever the design, it's humanoid enough that motion capture suits are helpful.

When's the Marvel stuff getting revealed at D23?

Actually think chitauri look cooler than the skrulls. The skrulls looks more like goblins or orcs from a fantasy setting, than a high tech alien species.

The above being a chitari.

These are the goblins, I mean, the Scrulls. :)

I confirm tea's last statement. That is exactly the problem with Chitari.....they look just exactly like every other alien that we have seen on screen. When it all comes down to it, what the Hell difference does it make which name they use for the aliens?

Seejay: The skrulls looks more like goblins or orcs from a fantasy setting, than a high tech alien species.

What exactly do the "high tech alien" races look like? =P

I'm so pissed that Marvel hasn't planned the Avenger's as a trilogy. With such a so called big event movie you would think they would want to do something bigger than a one shot. I' very disappointed!!

The gun does seem to be of Kree design. It looks very similar to Noh-Varr's.

True, however regardless, the Skrulls look associates to medieval fantasy imo.

But I'm fine with whatever. Marvel will undoubtedly not let the audience down.
BooYah
BooYah - 8/20/2011, 6:29 AM
@strangerx- I'm actually happy they arent. They had so many movies leading up to this it'd be better to have a movie that finishes the story. I do want a trilogy though.

calavera666

Maybe it's just some random space gladiators/minions, sent by a main villain, call it kang/thanos/or whatever.
poseidon
poseidon - 8/20/2011, 6:46 AM
This is ridiculous. I think what Marvel is doing is copying pretty much the Ultimate Avengers direct to DVD from 2005 & 2006. If you watch those you will see the similarities so far in the movie. They will fight Hulk in the beggining then the SHITARI! I dont want the SHITARI I want Skrulls! The SHITARI are too generic.
poseidon
poseidon - 8/20/2011, 6:48 AM
I definetely now think we are not getting Skrulls. I rewatched the Ultimated DVD and Im convinced its the SHITARI.....Look at the way the actors portrating the aliens are hunched over......

These "aliens", cough*Atlanteans*cough, will be existing characters from the Marvel universe. Whedon is just trying to be as secretive as possible with their identity. That's why they are going to CGI all of them in later, even if they are the Kree or whoever.
