But, no, he's not. Coulson tricked him by catching Agent 33. When Ward showed up, Coulson offered him a deal. Either he helps them take down Dr. List (Hydra) and gets the TAHITI mind wipe, or Coulson locks him up.

Ward is essentially the typical 'bad boy' he switches sides but has his own agenda. He is 'good' on the inside, but his actions are generally 'evil'

Yeah. Coulson threatened him with it. It was a pretty good scene. Ward actually looked very scared of the possibility of having his entire life wiped away, as [frick]ed up as it is. He's got a plan though. Agent 33 expressed her worries about it, and Ward told her not to worry.

Hope it ends with them locating but not being able to penetrate the Hydra base. Then a call is made to Maria Hill and they have to bring in the big guns. Hand the baton over to the Avengers this weekend.

I've been watching season 1 from the beginning. Its cool to see the seeds of the second half of season one being sown even though the series got off to such a rough start. I've long forgiven AOS for the angst I felt when the show began. Its made up for it in spades and has solidly become one of my favorite shows and essentially must see TV.

I'm looking forward to the show getting past just finding its legs but hitting its stride in seasons to come.
