SUPERGIRL Gets Serious In Action-Packed New Trailer & Featurette SUPERGIRL Gets Serious In Action-Packed New Trailer & Featurette

A first look at CBS' Supergirl show was a pretty light-hearted affair, but this second (mercifully shorter) promo strikes a slightly more serious tone as Kara lays the smackdown on a super-powered bad guy.

SUPERGIRL is an action-adventure drama based on the DC Comics character Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist), Superman’s (Kal-El) cousin who, after 12 years of keeping her powers a secret on Earth, decides to finally embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be. Twelve-year-old Kara escaped the doomed planet Krypton with her parents’ help at the same time as the infant Kal-El. Protected and raised on Earth by her foster family, the Danvers, Kara grew up in the shadow of her foster sister, Alex (Chyler Leigh), and learned to conceal the phenomenal powers she shares with her famous cousin in order to keep her identity a secret. Years later at 24, Kara lives in National City assisting media mogul and fierce taskmaster Cat Grant (Golden Globe Award winner Calista Flockhart), who just hired the Daily Planet’s former photographer, James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks), as her new art director. However, Kara’s days of keeping her talents a secret are over when Hank Henshaw (David Harewood), head of a super-secret agency where her sister also works, enlists her to help them protect the citizens of National City from sinister threats. Though Kara will need to find a way to manage her newfound empowerment with her very human relationships, her heart soars as she takes to the skies as Supergirl to fight crime.

This show is so unrealistic. Do you have any idea how much an apartment that size would cost in downtown National City? Her rent would be more than her salary as an executive assistant.

Really impressed by the special effects but the first trailer was giving off the rom-com vibe too hard.

I'll check out the first few eps.

Loving the trailer.... soooo looking forward to the series... maybe they can bring Supes back (Tom Welling, flying and in full costume!)

Even though there's a mattress there, I still wouldn't fall back on it that close to an actual drop. [frick], that.

I hate it when they have to ASK PERMISSION to save the city!

I hated Ryan asking the Guardians in GL for permission to save the Earth....even though he's been already chosen to protect that sector...

Great trailer Supergirl looks great. The show looks like it will have a good story too which you can develop on TV and the colours are bright on the cape. will be cool when Superman makes an appearance too. Cant wait

Can I just say, within the context of overall approval of the apparent direction of this show, that one particular refrain from these trailers is really getting under my skin.

Kara is seemingling constantly being told what she should do, and what she shouldn't do from pretty much everyone around her. It sounds like she is constantly seeking validation from her sister, her cousin, her friend-zoned guy, the military. There are a lot of protagonists in superhero fiction (particularly younger females) that the writers tend to bounce around like a passive super puppy, without any particular guiding principles of their own.

That can work, if the overall arc is to disregard all of the dissenting voices around you and "follow your heart", or whatever. But that doesn't look like the way they're going here.

This is why Captain America works so well as a heroic character in the movies. He doesn't seek external validation. He doesn't need people to tell him what he should do to be a hero. He knows he is and knows when he isn't. That's an incredibly important aspect of the heroic archetype that so many of these shows and movies get wrong.

Blue Heat vision?! No thank you!

Nah, looks great. DC needs to embrace their fun side a little bit.

This new Supergirl show does seem a bit contrived but it does seem to have great special effects for a tv show budget. It's also pretty cool that Superman does exist in this universe. I will definitely be checking out the pilot episode.

I actually hope this succeeds, as long as the show runners treat the character with respect and not turn it into Gossip Girl with super powers. Melissa Benoist seems to have an instant likability about her. Give this one a chance people.

The VFX are pretty good, and she's likable. But that's about it.

I wish the producers would take a page out of the comics and have Kara wear a brunette wig as a part of her secret identity. The glasses are ok, a homage to Clark.

I'll hold final judgement until I see the show myself.

I have to say, the VFX are pretty impressive for a TV budget.

However, I'm even less impressed with the concept it's self now I've seen it in action. I have the feeling that Kara will become intensely irritating exceptionally quickly.

Ugly Betty with Powers sums this up perfectly. Sad times.

@Brainiac13

Exactly. There is some vein of superhero films and shows that for some reason make their heroes unbearably passive for essentially no reason.

Man of Steel's Superman basically runs from his powers because his father told him to, and only really accepts his mantle when his other father tells him to.

Arrow's Oliver Queen goes around threatening (and killing? memory is hazy) people on his father's list of co-conspirators for a reason he doesn't even understand for the first season.

Iron Man is usually immune from that, with Tony defiantly answering to no one's expectations but his own (until Iron Man 2, where he needed some validation from some Mad Men outtakes). Zigzagged a bit with Thor, where the source of his power actually is his father's approval (have fun with that, Freud).

Even Flash and Daredevil, while a bit better, are still wrapped up in a lot of daddy issues... So basically what I'm getting at here is that only Captain America seems to be doing this stuff because he's actually just a good dude.

Either that, or it's cuz chicks dig it.

I like that they aren't flinching from the costume, even if they seem to be jumping through imaginary hoops to explain it. ("Capes are aerodynamic" is so moronic that just saying "capes look cool" is somehow a smarter rationalization.)

But still, costumes are good. Hopefully this will help turn the tide on the TV discomfort with them.

this looks like an estrogen filled TV show.....and it looks super cheesy and predictable.....

"I was sent here for a reason"
"Ya know, you kinda look like him..."
"Kara! I believe in you!"
"I can't do it!"
"Yes you can!"

LMAO.....this show is going to suck balls......super lame

@marvelstudios

If this were in the CW-verse, then it's a bit odd that no one has mentioned Superman (who seems to be an established hero of worldwide renown in Supergirl). Also, when she says:

"Earth doesn't have just one hero anymore"

...this would be her telling Flash, Atom, and Green Arrow to go suck a dick, I guess.
