UPDATED: Seth McFarlane to Reboot The Flintstones

Deadline is reporting that Seth McFarlane has been given the green light to reboot The Flintstones as both a TV and film property. Many details still need to be ironed out — including how much of McFarlane's off-color humor can be incorporated into Fred, Barney, Wilma and Betty. Now McFarlane himself has weighed in on the reboot.

UPDATE — COMMENT FROM SETH MCFARLANE
“One of the first things I ever drew was Fred Flintstone,” MacFarlane said at the Fox Upfronts, noting that this new version has to keep up with the times, but that some things will remain familiar to fans of the original. “The characters will look the same but the only thing that will change is the stories. What’s the [prehistoric] version of an Ipod?”

As Deadline puts it, "Not only did the suits have a ton of deal points to work through, but I hear the "Yabba Dabba Doo" prehistoric family sitcom's rightholders were somewhat concerned how the classic series would be interpreted given MacFarlane's brand of raunchy comedies like The Family Guy. (But, if you ask me, Universal's dreadful Flintstones films were the real abomination...)."

So what's the feeling out there about a reboot of the Flintstones -- Yabba Dabba Doo, or Yabba Dabba Don't?

Why mess with a classic? You already have your own show to do as you please with Seth, but do you really need to make a mockery of the Flintstones. That is what it feels like, only because that is what you do in all your other cartoon comedies.

The Flintstones is a different beast and as such cannot be handled in the same way as Family Guy or The Cleveland Show. So if this does come into fruitation the rightholders better lay some very strict guidelines down. If that can be squared away it is worth a try, I just see this stuck in development hell.

I always though that they should give The Flinstones on TV again. But Seth McFarlane as the man to reboot the franchise . . . I don't know. I don't want him to make it too raunchy and destroy its classicism. But I am willing to give it a try.

If this does go down I hope they don't change the animation style like they did with the Looney Tunes.

I'm fine, as long as he keeps it childish, but he probably won't, so he should just stay away.

He is a bad predictable gag reliant writer. Hate to be controversial or snobbish but only stupid people find his writing funny.

Since Family Guy is ripping off Simpsons and the SImpsons are ripping off the Flintstones, this is like Seth getting back to the Root of it all

What I want is for Matt Greoning to reboot UNDERDOG (and not that lame live action movie)

Don't forget -- the Flintstones was originally an adult, prime time show in the '60s. Hell, there were TV commercials where Fred and Wilma were talking about the joys of smoking.

I would REALLY be upset to see the Flintstones reduced to a raunch-fest like McFarlane's other shows. The difference here is that the Flintstones has been established as a true FAMILY show since before most of us here were born.Keep it family-oriented and clean, and I'd be all for it. Yes, I know that Fred and Barney pitched cigarettes and beer, but those were very different times. People were a lot more tolerant of smoking in the early '60s than they are today. Also, keep the original animation style.

Vrbuzard: I'd be all for a proper reboot of the Underdog cartoon series myself. One of my childhood favorites.

He would do great with this! He is trying to hard with "Family Guy" so the jokes seem forced and pointless. He is not involved with "The Cleavland Show" which he could help but the show just sucks. And hes not pushing "American Dad" which I feel is still brilliant and the only one holding up. He just needs something new and to stop hashing up whatever crap he can for his older projects.

This is awful news. Makes me wanna poke my eyes out.

Have you guys seen the original FLINTSTONES? it´s adult timeless humor, it´s beyond Seth McFarlane´s reach, it shouldn´t be touched.

Guys Seth has done more family oriented stuff to he originally started by writing episodes of Dexter's Labratory, Johnny Bravo, and Cow and Chicken . I have faith in him and i know he loves the source material and wont do wrong with it

I don't care for The Flintstones but I like Family Guy, might be neat to see what he does.

How he is able to make three sitcoms at once is beyond me; I guess he'll work on this after FG is finished.

@ InSpace- You hit the nail on the head; he wrote two episodes of Cow and Chicken one of the most outrageously stupid cartoons of all time.

I would boycott buying Pebbles cereal if this were to happen and don't expect my kids to take Flintstones vitamins anymore.

Seth Macfarlene is not funny at all, in the [frick]ing least. Family Guy is DUMB. It's just "Hey lois remembert the time I sat on Mr T's face for an hour and a half" Cut to- "Get off ma face fool!"

Anyone can right a family guy joke, it's pimples.

How is this anywhere close to "comic book movie" news?

This article is not about comic books or movies or comic book movies....

What's next? Articles on the stock market? Or how about weather and sports?

That's the big problem with this site -- it's having a hard enough time trying to provide accurate, reliable and interesting news about CBMs, yet it tries to cover other topics like video games, TV shows etc.

It's not like it's October and it's a dead period for CBM news.... We are in the eye of the CBM news storm. Come on now.

blinkudlhc, there have been MANY Flintstones comics published over the years, making it as legitimate as any other film or TV show that has been turned into a comic that we cover on this site.
