Actor Benicio del Toro spoke to Collider about his role in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, including what drew him to the role, how he developed the character and what his contract with Marvel Studios entails. Said del Toro on The Collector, "What James [Gunn] wanted, that I found out little by little as I was doing it, is that he wanted me to explore and just keep pushing the character and keep creating [him] as I was in front of the camera."

SYNOPSIS: Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits–Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand - with the galaxy’s fate in the balance. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is presented by Marvel Studios and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gilian, Djimon Hounsou with John C. Reilly, Glenn Close as Commander Rael and Benicio del Toro as The Collector. Distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, the film opens August 1, 2014.

@SimonPhoenix I'm half way through and it is just way too boring.

To anyone about to see the video, he basically says he's not sure how many he's signed on for, but if they wanted him back he'd be fine with doing it.

*spoiler* If you've seen the movie by now you'll know the twist in the third act is that the collector is the Mandarin. So unexpected.

@GliderMan, its a joke. I'm playing off the assumption by many nerds who, despite severe evidence to the contrary, assume the movies will follow the comics, specifically by killing off the first star to make rdj money without being rdj and replacing him. The big piece of evidence usually cited is how Evans has a shorter contract than Stan. (Which is really just because of Evans uncertainty at the time of signing on, and of course Stan isn't necessarily guaranteed to fulfill all those appearances, look at Ed Norton's contract.)

Thus, I am teasing that actors signed for multi films will replace Evans.

SPOILERS!

SPOILERS!!!!!

After Ophelia blows up the Collector's museum during the movie, we are brought to the Collector sitting in the rubble with bandages rubbing his head. Cosmo (In full Russian Cosmonaut gear) comes up and starts licking his face while the Collector has a defeated look on his face. A voice is then heard off screen saying "You shouldn't let him lick your face like that"

It cuts to a broken display with non other than Howard the Duck sitting, staring at the Collector drinking a martini. He's all CGI and lis wearing his trademark red coat.

"He was licking his own ass." He says as he stares at him.

His voice sounded just like Nathan Fillion, so my guess is that this is his secret role.
