UNCHARTED Movie Close, MASS EFFECT Movie 5 To 6 Years Away

Producer Avi Arad is seeking to work the same magic for video game movies that he did for comic book movies (see Spider-Man and Blade). In a new interview, Arad updates the status of the Uncharted, Mass Effect and Metal Gear Solid movies.

Producer Avi Arad has his hand in a lot 'jars' these days and not just comic book movies. His new Pac-Man animated television show on Disney XD is a surprise hit but he's got bigger plans for video games. Arad wants to make the genre of video game movies just as big as comic book movies. Arad praises the success of the Resident Evil film series but thinks video game movies have yet to have that game changing production that changes public perception. "Converting games to film hasn’t been done yet successfully, though Resident Evil did very well—it was actually a great series. I remember when [producer] Bernd Eichinger started it,” said Arad. He continued, ”I was working with him, I just couldn’t do that at Marvel but I had a good feeling about it, it’s a fantastic franchise. I think that film studios are bankers and filmmakers are risk takers and somewhere in between we meet on the battlefield. And the moment one video game movie goes through the roof, it’s the same thing that I’ve been through with comic books.”

In a new interview, Arad made it sound like the Uncharted movie is furthest along out of his many video game movie projects that also include Mass Effect, Metal Gear Solid and inFAMOUS.“I think the Uncharted movie will be very successful. It’s a father and son game. There are things about it that are interesting. I think the world of antiquities theft, there are many countries in the world that realized they’re being robbed and they’re trying to recoup these important pieces. Now, the script has a lot of character [and] I think that has a shot at being the first one [to succeed].” Uncharted is currently set up at Sony and features a script that was originally penned by Joshua Oppenheimer and Thomas Dean Donnelly (Conan the Barbarian) but has since been rewritten by Marianne and Cormac Wibberley (National Treasure). At one point in time, director David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook) and actor Mark Wahlberg (The Fighter) were both attached to the project but they’ve both departed to pursue other endeavors.

The next closest project to fruition appears to be the Metal Gear Solid movie. However, that's still three or more years away according to Arad. Like the Uncharted movie, the Metal Gear Solid adaptation is set up at Sony yet, Arad cautions that negotiations between Sony and Konami could take a while. In the meantime, Arad says he remains in close contact with Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima.

The movie that seems to be the farthest away is the Mass Effect adaptation. The project is currently set up at Legendary Pictures, who just jumped ship from Warner Bros. to partner with Universal Pictures. “It’s a big idea, that we, humans, are the least developed, the least trusted, it’s an interesting image of our world, we are the aliens now,” said Arad of the adaptation. ”Love the project, it’s getting there, it’s been a lot of work; some movies take five, six years before they’re ready.” Legendary is currently working on bringing a World of Warcraft film to movie screens, whose success I imagine, will ultimately dictate the fate of Mass Effect.

Arad praises the success of the Resident Evil film series

Is when I stopped reading.

Looking forward to a trilogy of Mass Effect films though

@Cipher Ha!

Love Mass Effect, a movie has the potential to be great, same with Metal Gear Solid, though admittedly I haven't played much of it.

Guess the Warcraft film will be the one on which these movies depend. Though what with that, and the many Ubisoft films being planned, such as 2015's Assassins Creed, maybe it's time for video games to get the adaptations they deserve, I hope so
TyrantBoss - 8/30/2013, 7:03 AM
By the time they make Mass Effect no one will care what Mass Effect was.
MarkJulian - 8/30/2013, 7:04 AM
They're already planning Mass Effect 4 so a new game could coincide with the film.
ndwwrestler2 - 8/30/2013, 7:05 AM
Take your time with the Mass Effect, and for goodness's sake, pick a credible director.

@cipher That is awesome.
JayJayCAW - 8/30/2013, 7:08 AM
Hopefully we get some kind of Mass Effect follow up game before the movie just to get a refresher so it's a bit relevant again since in 5-6 years.....ppl will be like "WTF is Mass Effect?"
Arrowhead77 - 8/30/2013, 7:11 AM
A Mass Effect movie could be huge!!! If made correctly it would be a more badass Star Trek. It has great characters and sweet visuals.

Also would love an Uncharted movie!

Like Mark said above, Bioware are currently working on a fourth Mass Effect title, so pretty sure that given it's a successful series, there will still be Mass Effect games around the time of the movie
ndwwrestler2 - 8/30/2013, 7:13 AM
Honestly though. Something like Mass Effect would probably be better as an HBO series than a movie.

ndwwrestler2 - 8/30/2013, 7:18 AM
David O Russel was attached to Uncharted? Now that is something I would have definitely liked to see.
ATrueHero1987 - 8/30/2013, 7:19 AM
I remember this guy when he was with Marvel. He did a lot of talking. I remember he was talking about getting a Werewolf By Night, Deathlok, and even a Gargoyle movie made( the marvel mini-series, not the kids show) so to me all this video game movie talk is just that...talk.
spidey1994 - 8/30/2013, 7:22 AM
How the [frick] is Uncharted a father and son game?!
MrMartinMarvel - 8/30/2013, 7:22 AM
@ndwwrestler2 Trust me it was gonna suck. http://collider.com/david-o-russell-uncharted-departure-script-sony/
MightyZeus - 8/30/2013, 7:25 AM
Mark Wahlberg going to be portraying Nathan Drake? I'd feel sorry for the fans if that happened.

Also, i've never played Mass Effect but i know how big of a deal it is to the fans. I really hope the fans get the best representation of the game adaptation on the big screen when it get's developed.
MarkJulian - 8/30/2013, 7:25 AM
@spidey1994 "O. Russell had apparently changed Nathan Drake from a lone adventurer to a participant in a family of treasure hunters." Sony said [frick] that and gave him the boot.
MightyZeus - 8/30/2013, 7:26 AM
Hey i'm still waiting for that 'Moon Knight' film.
MarkJulian - 8/30/2013, 7:26 AM
But Arad's recent comment implies that element is still in play. Strange!
wcwpoet - 8/30/2013, 7:28 AM
@spidey1994 my thoughts exactly!
I can't stand Avi Arad his description of Uncharted is reason enough to distrust anything he has his hands in. And stay the hell away from MGS I do want to see it on the big screen but only if done right.
ndwwrestler2 - 8/30/2013, 7:29 AM
@MrMartinMarvel Ok, that sounds way different than the Uncharted I heard about.

It would've been good movie wise (O'Russell is one of the best directors out there), but I can see why fans would be pissed about that idea.
@spidey1994, well Drake looks up to Sully as a father figure.
Hopefully we get a great God of War and Legend of Zelda movie one day. The Metal Gear series is way to complex for a movie, but a show on HBO would work. I can't wait for Assassin's Creed movie especially will with Michael Fassbender in the film.
thewonderer - 8/30/2013, 7:39 AM
David O Russell is a fantastic director though. Changes suck, but O Russell makes it interesting still
DudeGuyMan - 8/30/2013, 7:41 AM
I though studios would be more open to Mass Effect after Elysium basically emulated the look of it.

I just hope it gets made before Uwe Boll gets his hands on it and ruins any chance of big studio adaptation.
@LEVITIKUZ, that would be great if they did Hell Boy 3, but I don't think Del Toro would direct the movie.
gmoney0505 - 8/30/2013, 7:48 AM
Metal Gear would make for a great story for a movie

If people would have any sense in a inFAMOUS movie, they would keep the story the same from the game. The game story is pitch perfect on all levels of emotions.

Uncharted is really unnecessary for a movie. Excellent game for action just story is not really needed.

A god of War movie would be a dream for me to see kratos climbing gigantic Titans like the game does. That fluid action with his chains would be remarkable to watch if done right.

Alot of times Sony just dont know what kind of gems they have under their belt with their games. They been sitting on Ratchet & Clank for a decade and finally decided oh yeah lets do a movie with this universe. Tat should have been done years ago with a animated series or something. Those characters and the dynamic they have are pitch perfect for series and movies.
MrMartinMarvel - 8/30/2013, 7:51 AM
I honestly don't care if it would have been a good movie, I'd take X-Men Origins over O. Russell's idea.
ndwwrestler2 - 8/30/2013, 7:56 AM
@MrMartinMarvel If you were arguing as a movie goer, I would strongly disagree with you. But as a fan, I can see why you (and probably most fans) would feel that way.
Ocelot - 8/30/2013, 8:00 AM
@cipher

LMAO

A Mass Effect movie could be great if done right, though I dont them basing it on the events of the game that include shepard, they'll probably do first contact war storyline or perhaps another character who interacts with different members of Shepards team over the films but doesn't actually encouter. Though the Reapers and the Illusive Man definitely need the big screen treatment. A new Mass Effect game is coming out in 2015 and there will most likely be follow on games , if a Mass Effect movie is 5-6 years away it will most likely coincide with one of the games. Just hope the Bioware writers have learnt their lesson after the Mass Effect 3 ending debacle, that was one of the biggest jokes i've seen for a long time.
MercwithMouth - 8/30/2013, 8:04 AM
Metal Gear Solid would be a wicked HBO espionage series, as long as it was cast right. God of War is my most anticipated game adaptation. I really, really, REALLY wanna see Kratos [frick] up some wraiths, and Titans, and Ares on the big screen!

Jason Momoa for Kratos!!!

Karl Urban for Solid Snake!!!
Tom Hardy for Liquid Snake!!!
Scott Adkins for Gray Wolf!!!
Paul Bettany or Michael Fassbender for Psycho Mantis!!!
polarkyle - 8/30/2013, 8:09 AM
am i the only who gets excited when a new video game movie is in development.
MightyZeus - 8/30/2013, 8:09 AM
Del Toro should do Justice League Dark then Hellboy 3, but that's just my opinion.
MercwithMouth - 8/30/2013, 8:09 AM
those metal gear choices would be a movie adaptation FYI
P862010 - 8/30/2013, 8:13 AM
should of just let david o russel make it but you dumb fanboys scared him away

the fighter
silver lining playbook

and you cried
Kyos - 8/30/2013, 8:22 AM
The father/son treasure hunting idea might very well make an enjoyable movie in the right hands, but it's not damn Uncharted and there'd be no need to call it that. I'd seriously hoped that project was dead already... :O
@ Levi, I didn't know he written a script, do you know what the story is about.
Growler - 8/30/2013, 8:40 AM
I' puzzling over how one could adapt inFAMOUS.

The whole point of those games was the moral choices the player makes and their implications so, unless there were two films in production at the same time to reflect the duality, there's no feasible way to make this film.
SpectacularJoShFest - 8/30/2013, 8:55 AM
The Uncharted script being written by the people who made National Treasure? [frick] that, get the people from Naughty Dog to write the story...and make it into a game...BOOM...there's your movie.
Uncharted doesn't need this kind of crap...in fact...after The Last of Us, I don't even think Uncharted has a chance to out-do itself. Uncharted was a master piece...Uncharted 2 was even better,Uncharted 3 was not as good as its predecessors but it was one of the best games on the PS3 any ways...and The Last of Us made Uncharted look like Crash Bandicoot with guns.
My point is.....[frick] the movie.
Vaportrail - 8/30/2013, 9:10 AM
5-6 years.
A series is at the peak of it's success and you want people to wait 5-6 years?!

By then, it'll be a nostalgia film. "Hey, remember Mass Effect?"
