Callan Mulvey Talks 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE And CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

Rising Australian actor Callan Mulvey talks about his preparation for WB's 300: Rise of an Empire and Marvel's Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Is his Marvel role one and done, or is he appearing in other projects like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.?

A while back, I posted a theory that Captain America: The Winter Soldier is greatly influenced by a 1988 six issue miniseries, Nick Fury vs S.H.I.E.L.D., written by Bob Harras and Paul Neary. To sum up a long story, S.H.I.E.L.D. is infiltrated by an outside, malevolent force that corrupts its policies and practices in such a covert manner that only Nick Fury realizes what is happening. We don't know for sure yet, but it appears that something of that ilk may be happening on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and in the Russo Bros.' Captain America sequel. Clevver Movies spoke to Mulvey about his Marvel role (he plays Jack Rollins, a central S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent in the 1998 comic book story), as well as his role in 300: Rise of an Empire.

Mulvey's career is definitely trending in the right direction. After a breakout role in Zero Dark Thirty, he's starred in 300: Rise of an Empire, filmed a key supporting role in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and is rumored to be up for a role in Zack Snyder's Batman vs Superman. I'd say things are definitely looking up for the 39-year-old Australian.

Gimme back Red [frick]ing skull for Cap 2 then Masters of evil for Avengers 2
Jollem - 3/8/2014, 4:57 AM
wouldn't red skull make an awesome villain for the avengers? or a real, actual mandarin? sigh
DrunkenNukem - 3/8/2014, 5:03 AM
He is a good actor...he was a badass in 300 ROTE

He would have own the Lex role
Jollem - 3/8/2014, 5:27 AM
are they really gonna backtrack on their terrible decision to make mandarin an allegory for rdjr.'s personal life? if you look at it, the iron man suit is an allegory for crack cocaine
CaptShipwreck - 3/8/2014, 5:36 AM
Dude this a 300 thread ... Stop beating a dead horse already with the mandarin bitching... You kinda sound like a baby girl .... Act like a man and stop menstruating by not bitching
sameoldthing - 3/8/2014, 5:38 AM
He's a cool actor, hope he stars in more films.
New 300 movie was badass..much like the original.
Not supposed to be historically accurate, just a good ol R-rated action flick.
Jollem - 3/8/2014, 5:41 AM
does the crack make the man or does the man make the crack?
Nomis - 3/8/2014, 6:03 AM
@ 0megaDaGod - Man, he would'e been great as Lex!
TheRealRemyLebeau - 3/8/2014, 6:14 AM
Haven't seen the new 300 but my friends told me its not all that great. It's ok compared to the first, I was told. Anywho I remember that article about nick fury vs. Shield. Interesting thoughts and that story might bleed into agents of shield. Oh the wonders of marvel.

Agreed. Regardless of how well Eisenberg's Lex comes out, it will very likely not be what I was looking forward to. No matter how good it gets, on some level, it will be a disappointment; it reminds me of X-Men in that way. Mulvey would have been a great physical presence for the Lex I envisioned.

@Enphlieuwince,0mega & Nomis

I have to admit Eisenberg was the last person I thought would be a Lex,but he is Cavill's same age, regardless of appearance, and his casting feels like Anne Hathaway as in that Princess couldn't pull of Selina Kyle.

Interesting to know he's an agent in the new Cap movie. Hmmm.....
dethpillow - 3/8/2014, 9:19 AM
@Jollem - hmmm, i think you're on to something. cuz at the end, Tony seems to epiphanize that he, himself IS the crack, itself.

so he used to have ingest the crack, itself, but now his body must be able to just generate it, itself. from maybe from copying it's chemical DNA signature.

it's similar to how Batman, was a symbol of the fear, itself that Gotham, the city itself, was wanting, but that the city, itself, actually needed something it didn't know it wanted yet. it didn't itself know that yet.

cuz it wanted fear, and if fear makes gods walk amongst men, then who will walk amongst the fear that gods make?

if truly this is a time for gods to fear the legacy of their own walking.
then can any man, himself, truly become a walking legacy amongst fearful gods?

and if those that doth toll the bell of rising dark steel?
does the bell toll for them? ask not what your bell can toll for your country, for whom the bell does toll walks amongst gods in the form of a fearful bats and maybe even with Superman. in fear and dark rising steel.

so i think it's fair to say that it's probably that they don't know yet...
and probably you have to check back in a couple weeks or so and find out then.

@remy

300 rise of the empire has some pretty good action and effects but that pretty much it..... Oh also Eva Green's boobs which was almost worth the price of admission ;)

SCURVYDOG619 - 3/8/2014, 10:59 AM
That Nick Fury Versus SHIELD story was somethin' ,all right. In the story-spoilers-SHIELD is infiltrated by LMDs who have gained sentience and replaced many characters, including Jimmy Woo and Clay Quartermain, with dopplegangers, forcing Fury to go on the run from his own agency. It'll make your head spin....

JoJo1982

Then a glorious boob it must be.

@enphlieuwince

Lol yessir it is
frova - 3/8/2014, 2:31 PM
I think when they ask him about AOS he says yes right away - realizes immediately and explains to cover it up. Felt like he was covering up an answer
Jollem - 3/8/2014, 4:10 PM
@dethpillow - in im 2, the suit and the condition he has makes him a hero (kooky, quirky, awesome actor guy), but being iron man is also killing him (as crack tends to do)

at the end of 3, he blows up (quits) the crack and gets his "condition" fixed. he don't need that shit no more
MightyZeus - 3/8/2014, 5:15 PM
I would not have mind if this guy was Lex.

I also would not have mmind if he where Parasite or Metallo.

Batman vs Superman sure has wasted there opportunity.

Captain America The Winter Soldier should be spectacular and i'm really looking forward to it.

I believe the terrorist organization that is infiltrating S.H.I.E.L.D. is HYDRA.

I'm ruling out the The Ten Rings because they're probably being saved for future Iron Man movies.

The way the bad guys operate in CA:TWS screams HYDRA. Also, HYDRA plays a big role in TA:AOU which CA:TWS leads into.

MarkJulian - 3/9/2014, 7:31 AM
@Gr33n4rrow I write it. And he is an Australian actor, family moved their when he was 8 and he got his start in the Australian film industry. I actually research stuff before I write it up. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Callan_Mulvey#Personal_life
huckfinnisher - 3/9/2014, 11:10 AM
@jollem wouldn't it be easier to say drugs since the parallels your spoke of are pretty much universal to all hard drugs not just crack?
Gr33n4rrow - 3/9/2014, 2:04 PM
bro, Born in New Zealand means you have a kiwi passport and birth cert. hence your a kiwi. I am from England but live in New Zealand. If i made a big life success in something i would never say i were a kiwi, and know the kiwi culture im sure Callan would call himself a kiwi.
Gr33n4rrow - 3/9/2014, 2:05 PM
he is also part Maori, which has a massive influence on Kiwi culture and history.
