The Tesseract (aka Cosmic Cube) has appeared in several films in the
Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though, it took center stage in Marvel's
Captain America: The First Avenger. The
Red Skull and
Arnim Zola want to harness the power of the Cosmic Cube to power their weapons. Then in the finale, Red Skull plans to use the Cosmic Cube and his long-range bomber to attack the United States of Awesome. Along the way, Red Skull scoops up the cube and results in him being disintegrated. Since he has no body to hold the cube any longer it lands on the floor of the bomber and melts through it like butter - dropping into the ocean. We will later find out that Tony's father Howard Stark recovered the Tesseract.
