SPIDER-MAN (2002) & Green Goblin Concept Art By Warren Manser

Recently, director Sam Raimi grabbed a few headlines for admitting that he too wasn't thrilled with Spider-Man 3, but instead of focusing on a negative let's look at alternate Green Goblin and Spidey costume designs from 2002's Spider-Man.

The other day, we took a look at Warren Manser's Daredevil and Elektra concept art, but today I wanted to look at his Green Goblin and Spidey concept art for Sam Raimi's Spider-Man. I like Warren's alternate designs for Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin costume, especially the version in which the mask opens up like a visor on a knight's helmet.

"I really like the Goblin from the comics because he always reminded me of halloween. My first concepts were very close to the comic version because I wanted the character to retain his method of intimidation through fear. Technology would be secondary to psychology, and so he could look like a demon. But alas, he went the high tech route. There was much concern over whether or not the audience could see actor Willem Dafoe’s performance. I created quite a few concepts of the mask’s eye lenses articulating to reveal his eyes, and then the whole mask hinging open to reveal most of his face." - Warren Manser

Warren was very busy at the time 2007's Spider-Man 3 went into pre-production, so he only worked on that project for a brief time. You can see one piece of Venom (Topher Grace) concept art, at the bottom, that he designed for the film.

Spider-Man (2002) - Average teenager Peter Parker is transformed into an extraordinary super hero after he is accidentally bitten by a radioactive spider. When his beloved uncle is savagely murdered during a robbery, young Peter vows to use his powers to avenge his death. Deeming himself "Spider-Man," he sets about ridding the streets of crime, bringing him into conflict with malevolent super-villain "Green Goblin."
