RUMOR: Sony Executives Hate Marc Webb's THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN
The website Badass Digest is reporting that they have heard rumblings that Sony executives are less than thrilled with Marc Webb's upcoming superhero film, The Amazing Spider-Man.
Take this with a grain of salt, but Devin Faraci of Badass Digest has returned from Las Vegas where he was covering CinemaCon, and has reported that while he was there he heard that there were Sony executives that loathed the new Spider-Man film.
I'm back from Vegas! All that travel means I'm a bit behind on some news, so while this happened yesterday I wanted to bring it up today...
Sony is looking at The Amazing Spider-Man as an investment. I've heard some really mixed things about the movie - much of which originates from INSIDE Sony - but no matter how the film does (unless the film is an unmitigated disaster, and that won't happen with a property like this), they're coming back for a sequel.
We'll see if The Amazing Spider-Man is as troubled as I've heard (the stories that come to me are that the execs hate it, and you can never tell when the execs are right or when they're stupid, stupid suits).
Let's examine this for a moment shall we. On one hand, why would a Sony executive open up his yapper and trash the film before it has even opened? That doesn't really make much sense, unless they want to try to distance themselves early from the backlash that will surely come if the film is in fact a stinker. Okay, so what about Badass Digest? This information was not the headline of their story. The focus of the piece is actually meant for the news about the Transformer scribes landing the gig to write the sequel. If Badass Digest was really looking to just gain attention you would figure they would've come up with a sexier headline like the one I have above.
The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents' disappearance - leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr Curt Connors (Ifans), his father's former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors' alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.
The Amazing Spider-Man stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Denis Leary, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, and Sally Field, the films swings into theaters July 3, 2012 in 3D!
