Peter Weller Doubts ROBOCOP Reboot Will Be As Good As The Original

At the Hero Complex Film Festival Peter Weller was asked about the upcoming Robocop reboot. A film he doubts will be able to capture the magic of the original. Click the jump to find out why.

At the three minute mark in the interview Peter Weller begins to share some fascinating behind-the-scenes information about the original Robocop. But it's at the eight minute mark when things get really juicy. Geoff Boucher asks Weller about the upcoming reboot and the actor doesn't hold back as he explains why the film will have a hard time duplicating the original's success.

I also encourage you to skip to the eleven minute mark in the video as Peter Weller uses Denzel Washington's car scenes in Training Day as an example of bad filmmaking.

Skip to the 8:00 mark for comments about the reboot.

TheAlexLynch - 6/25/2012, 7:15 PM
I actually just watched Robocop for the first time and it was amazing. Can the reboot be better? Possibly, but it definitely won't have the impact that the first film made.
TheGambitFreakIsBatmanOfCBM - 6/25/2012, 7:16 PM
I don't see the point in re-doing it. Same with Total Recall.
95 - 6/25/2012, 7:19 PM
He's probably right.
WellDrawn - 6/25/2012, 7:21 PM
Anyone else see Robocop back in the day first on TV, edited, and then watch the actual movie on DVD/VHS? I was shocked by just how brutal / violent it was - No way the new one is going to top it.
kurekurcubic - 6/25/2012, 7:24 PM
i love weller for what he did in robocop and he will always have my respect for that.but he is beeing a big hypocrite here.he has a problem with a robocop remake but he has no problem beeing in a sequel to a remake-STAR TREK!
BANE5000 - 6/25/2012, 7:25 PM
Im with Weller on this for sure...Robocop is my favorite sci fi film of the 80's, love the action, tragedy and satire of the film...
blvdnoise - 6/25/2012, 7:27 PM
Wow, He's got an 8mth old son? He just turned like 65 yesterday.. He's an interesting guy, but seems pretty hung on himself.
Fogs - 6/25/2012, 7:28 PM
@kurekurcubig - agreed. 100%.

ATrueHero1987 - 6/25/2012, 7:29 PM
Yea, good luck with the Robocop reboot. As for the Training Day car scenes. funny, lol, but I kinda disagree.
Coloso - 6/25/2012, 7:29 PM
@kurekurcubic no, not even close. 2009 Star Trek was not a remake, it reset the timeline so the prior films still count. That film did it right and added not subtracted from the Star Trek canon. In fact it made it cool again. Robocop is the remake that won't be able to catch the magic the original had, but it will look pretty with today's cgi.
damntree - 6/25/2012, 7:32 PM
As if the star of such gems as Screamers has any idea what a good movie is; this guy has never met a paycheck he didn't like.

MadJakHatesSpinoffs - 6/25/2012, 7:36 PM
The only way I see this reboot having a chance at even coming close to the original is just to not hold back and make it excessively violent. They need to forget 2 and 3 were ever made and just focus on the elements that made the first one great. Bloody, gritty, ultra violence is the one thing this movie needs. Just let Robo blow someone in half with a submachine gun.
marvel72 - 6/25/2012, 7:36 PM
it'll probably be better than robocop 2,3 & that f*ckin shit tv show.
SUPERMAN2013 - 6/25/2012, 7:39 PM
I like that they reboot old stuff,at least new generations can see some old films that had shitty cgi renewed for them, what do you think its gonna be like when we are 60,they will probably more spidermen and avengers n all that stuff and then we will complain about reboots, thats life..lol
Himura - 6/25/2012, 7:39 PM
Yeah I dunno how well the reboot will do but I'm still gonna go see it.
herofreak15 - 6/25/2012, 7:53 PM
You guys know Peter Weller is probably right...right?

Although I hate that their rebooting one of my favorite movies of all time it could be good, but right now I'm still kind of pissed about it. I might change my mind later on though when we see set photos or a teaser.
herofreak15 - 6/25/2012, 7:56 PM

I was just going to post what kurekurcubic said. Mr. Weller should himself shun all sequels and remakes. In fact no superhero should ever grace the screen in a sequel, retelling or remake again. Time must stop.

The first time I heard Weller I sympathized with his rant. But to me he is now only sounding like the lame old jock who does not want his 1960 high school track record broken. He goes from coffee to coffee shop sitting at the counter loudly saying how kids today are lazy crap compared to him in his day, and that, even if his record is broken, that kid is still not as good as him cause all these young brats have it so easy now.

The original is a classic and Mr. Weller can never be replaced in that regard. I don't have ESP, so I can't say whether the new version will be good or not. But I won't be hating the younger kid for giving it a try.
UrbanKnight - 6/25/2012, 8:15 PM
the og robocop is one of the first movies i ever saw as a kid.
ithought i was probably too young like 4 or 5 in the late 80s early 90s but wellers son beat me!lol

its still one of my favorite movies, huge impact on me that score!
i hope it doesnt suck but its all good i got the og one on bluray;)

he's got a point about traning day but i got a soft spot for that flick cuz my home town of watts, cali comes out in it..Watts up!
PeterDarker121 - 6/25/2012, 8:17 PM
This interview was absolutely amazing. I had never really noticed that about Training Day, but maybe it's because I assumed we were watching the close-ups from Jake Hoyt's point of view in the car, and...well, he WAS dusted on PCP.
cmay13 - 6/25/2012, 8:20 PM
This guy is [frick]ing nuts
thamorse - 6/25/2012, 8:24 PM
@WellDrawn. Yeah, I was born in 84, so that's exactly how I saw it the first time. Same thing with Predator.
Jolt17 - 6/25/2012, 8:34 PM
I've just seen the movie again yesterday, and...well, people have said it above. I'm hoping for the best, though, because I honestly really want to see the character back in action. It's been a while.
geeekgod - 6/25/2012, 8:54 PM
well, DUH!!! of course it's going to suck
Deathlok - 6/25/2012, 9:02 PM
Weller is so full of himself it's coming out of his ears.
darkmetal - 6/25/2012, 9:20 PM
Never watched Training Day but I checked out a clip and Wellers right about the scene. Ive seen car scenes look flawed as actors dont look ahead and the car never seems to stop at stop signs but Denzel Washington did the worst fake driving ever.
Denzel W. looks like a guy riding in a car, not a guy driving.
As for Robocops reboot, the cyborg story has been told. Weller, Ronny Cox and Kurtwood Smith as well as other actors made it great. We've had CGI heavy Transformers so Robocop CGI is not going to matter.
SageMode - 6/25/2012, 9:24 PM
The original was always one of my favorite film ever. This reboot just.......well, I don't think it's gonna a commercial success.

I agree with Weller BTW
theartofoneness - 6/25/2012, 9:36 PM
hes full of himself in a good way. he knows whats good and whats bad. on the note of the reboot, ide rather they called it a reimagining. You cant restart something that iconic... not really.. Im not sure what they will do but I imagine it will be very different than the original. It would be idiotic to try to do that unless you used the same costume design and made it about 400% cooler, meaningful, and epic.
Pokeysteve - 6/25/2012, 9:42 PM
Just the Score from the original will be better than the reboot. The new Total Recall looks stupid too. I'm biased though as I hate Colin Farrell.
mattattack - 6/25/2012, 10:11 PM
lol, the original Robocop is fun but not really that great of a film. Maybe it was back in the 80's but I don't really think it'll be too hard to top. Just look at the inspired casting and that alone should reassure you that it'll at least be worth checking the trailer out next year.
LeoKragg - 6/25/2012, 10:17 PM
Maybe it's 'cause it's late, and I'm tired from walking around all day but when Peter Weller stats ranting I don't know WHAT he's talkin' 'bout'! but I guess I get the gist of it heh heh!!
natedetroit - 6/25/2012, 10:28 PM
great interview.
thalidomide - 6/25/2012, 10:36 PM
Then why bother?
Ceejay - 6/26/2012, 12:10 AM
So its ok to reboot something like Star Trek but not this, why exactly? Well as usual as long as its not something you're particularly fond of nobody minds it being rebooted.

All I'm hearing is a lot of people HOPING that this film isn't better than the original. That's not hard, the original was an entertaining film but hardly an example of film making art and its SFX were ropy as hell. They already have a much more talented cast with Gary Oldman, Sammuel L Jackson and Hugh Laurie involved. Depends if they want to go down the satirical route the first movie did or not, they don't need to. They can take the subject a whole lot more serious and make a damn good scifi drama.

The reality is that the movie was no classic, just a cult favourite and as usual with cult films that status usually means the actual film isn't anything special, just for a small group of fans who grow attached to it for whatever reason. Peter Weller didn't go on to become a huge star or even a household name, nobody in the film did and Nancy Allen was coming to the end of her hey-day when she decided to do the movie. It was a budget movie to make at only $13 million dollars and its box office wasn't spell binding at $53 million so a decent remake stands a good chance of making at least four times as much as well as delivering a quality production.

@Owlman - Joel Kinnaman is playing Robocop, he was the asshole corporate tech thief in last years flop 'The Darkest Hour' and was in the US TV version of 'The Killing'.

fullmoon106 - 6/26/2012, 1:42 AM
I love the original Robocop. It's one of my all time favourites. I understand that some people are displeased about the reboot, but I'm not. Even if the movie sucks, it's not going to affect the original. They don't need to top that movie, they just need to make a good movie about Robocop for the audience of this day.

I think Robocop has been away too long, and I really wan't to see him again. Another sequel just doesn't cut it any more. The reboot seems like the right way to go, and I'm glad they seem to have some fresh ideas while staying true to the original. I don't want to see the same movie again, but it has to feel like Robocop.

And for now, things seem to be in really good shape. They have a great director, great cast and everybody seems to have a lot of respect for the original. I'm excited and I hope the movie does well.
White - 6/26/2012, 1:47 AM
If this is PG-13 lame bloodles comic action movie then I hope it flops and flops hard. But if it's Rated-R I will givi it a change. Robocop is R.
GUNSMITH - 6/26/2012, 2:33 AM
WELLER MADE ROBOCOP COOL..YOU CHANGE THE LOOK ,THE MAN, IF YOU CHANGE IT..IT'S JUST A MOVIE WITH A BORROWED NAME.
GUNSMITH - 6/26/2012, 2:41 AM
THE GUY SAYS WHAT HE FEELS AND ITS 100 PERCENT PASSION..HE WANTS TO GET THAT TENSION OUT BY GETTING VOCAL ABOUT ALL THE MISTAKES..HE KNOWS HIS STUFF

jaewest215 - 6/26/2012, 4:49 AM
LMAO!!!!! he's funny as hell.

he's speaking STRICTLY from an artist perspective. For the people that don't appreciate film and have not studied the craft, you won't know what he is talking about.
damntree - 6/26/2012, 4:54 AM
@Trudy - It's still bad even if it has some charm. The point is he doesn't know what a good movie looks like and if he was ever in a good movie it is purely by chance.

Robocop was good for sure but it was not the pinnacle of cinema. The good thing about remakes is it brings attention back to the old movies and contrary to popular belief all copies of the original do not instantly burst into flames when one comes out.
EstimatedProphet - 6/26/2012, 5:07 AM
It amazes me how many of you have no idea what a reboot is. The J.J. Abrams Star Trek movie was not a reboot. It's just another movie in the same universe, but on a different timeline. So, no, Peter Weller is not going to be in a reboot and he's not being hypocritical.
BenderDickCumPatch - 6/26/2012, 5:15 AM
THEN WHATS THE POINT OF A REBOOT IF YOU DONT EVEN HAVE FAITH IN THE FILM YOUR MAKING?
