Today in Tokyo at the Metal Gear 25th Anniversary presentation, Hideo Kojima, creator and director of the series, along with Hollywood producer Avi Arad, announce plans to adapt the video game into a movie. Avi Arad is best known for producing many Marvel films such as, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, and the X-Men trilogy, to name a few.
“For many years I fought to bring comics to theaters—and video games are the comics of today,” said Arad. “We will take our time and tell the story with all the nuances, idealogy, cautionary tales needed.”

During the presentation Hideo Kojima list a few of his favorite Hollywood actors like Matt Damon, Hugh Jackman, and Ben Affleck. Oh, and his favorite director just happens to be The Dark Knight Rises' Christopher Nolan. That's when Avid stepped in with a quick quip, ""We'll tell these actors and directors who you want, and maybe they'll do it for nothing."

This won't be the first video game-to-film adaptation that Avi has worked on. His name has been attached to Uncharted and a rumored inFAMOUS movie.

This also isn't the first time a Metal Gear Solid film has been in the works either. In 2008 there was talk of a Metal Gear Solid movie, but that fell through when Hollywood and Konami could not come to an agreement on the size of the budget. That version was to be produced by Boogie Nights' Michael De Luca.

The original Metal Gear was released in July of 1987. Over those twenty-five years Konami has solid 31 million Metal Gear games. The next installment, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance will be in stores next year. Check out the trailer below.

I hope this gets made, most videogame film adaptations get stuck in development hell or turn out awful. Super Mario Bros. anyone??? oh and First :)
Knightrider - 8/30/2012, 1:39 AM
If get it right, they have a chance at a awesome franchise
nailbiter111 - 8/30/2012, 1:44 AM
this was one of my favorite games when i was younger. i played the first 3 games in the series. with that out of the way let me say, this would make a really stupid movie. it's a really fun game, but that's all it is. the story was pretty silly, but for a video game you never really cared because the gameplay and graphics were so good. I'm sorry, a movie version makes no sense. cash grab!
gr3yfox - 8/30/2012, 1:53 AM
YES!!!

One of the best games l have ever played on the PS3, the cut scenes in the games puts some movies to shame!

this can be made into a trilogy just like the games and l have to say the director for this just has to be Nolan, he is the only one that can pull this off and l understand why the creator of the game Hideo Kojima said Nolan as there are lots of flashbacks and emotional scenes mixed with action.

Not expecting this to be made anytime soon but the creator Hideo Kojima will have total control over this not Avi Arad who likes to think he is.
CoolantTech - 8/30/2012, 2:13 AM
Man, Hideo kojima hit it dead on when he mentioned Hugh Jackman one of my best actors I might add, I could definately see him in the role... Hugh Jackman for Snake.

Grimm - 8/30/2012, 2:17 AM
gimme this and a front Mission movie! Then try to tackle Final Fantasy...
Toasty - 8/30/2012, 2:19 AM
NO NO NO NO, Metal Gear is my favourite game franchise ever, we do not need nor want a [frick]ing shitty hollywood movie the games are perfect and in essence like a movie themselves, LEAVE MY FRANCHISE ALONE!
AlexDeLarge87 - 8/30/2012, 2:19 AM
knightrider@ Couldnt agree more.

Jackman would be a decent choice as Solid
HavocPrime - 8/30/2012, 2:20 AM
Would be cool, but the games felt like movies anyway, so I don't really see thrones need to do this.
AlexDeLarge87 - 8/30/2012, 2:23 AM
Viggo Mortensen would have been awesome Snake back in the day.
lokibane2012 - 8/30/2012, 2:26 AM
MGS is badass game but will make a stupid movie. And Avi Arad is one creativity destroying force to be sincerely and severely feared.

(shudders)
Lightsplasher - 8/30/2012, 2:29 AM
OMFG ! This is amazing ! But hopin' they would not take Nolan
BigDamnHero - 8/30/2012, 2:34 AM
Snake? Snake?! Snaaaaakeee?!?!
polarkyle - 8/30/2012, 3:04 AM
i trust this guy that they can make a decent movie
Maxi91291 - 8/30/2012, 3:05 AM
AH cr@p ... I really hope they dont turn it into another Resident evil,Max Payne, Hitman or something ... Im just happy that the president of Kojima said that Uwe Boll will never get the rights when he wanted to make this movie ...

Jackman is not a bad choice .. he has that Snake face and physique ... maybe even E. Bana wouldnt be bad or Toby Stephens but yeah .. Jackman

But I would love it if they went with the Naked Snake/MGS 3 storyline for the first movie .... No Solid Snake yet .. just Big Boss
Maxi91291 - 8/30/2012, 3:08 AM
Raiden is really gay
TECHNODROME518 - 8/30/2012, 3:10 AM
OH MY GEEBUS IT'S ABOUT TIME! I've been wanting this since 2000. Eric Bana has Snakes look, and he might be able to play the role well. Now lets just get a Mega Man or Mega Man X, Zelda, and a Metroid movies in the works.
TruePunishment - 8/30/2012, 3:12 AM
This movie will suck MGS works better as a game.
AutobotCommander84 - 8/30/2012, 3:32 AM
@lokibane2012 Ignorance is bliss for you isn't it. [frick]ing dumbass.
spidey1610 - 8/30/2012, 3:45 AM
@lokibane2012 The man that produced Iron Man & inspired millions of children through Spider-Man deserves some credit.
DrainBamage - 8/30/2012, 3:59 AM
Here we go with this again. I wish they'd stop adapting these games into movies.
marvel72 - 8/30/2012, 3:59 AM
its got to be faithful to the games unlike resident evil & more like silent hill.also it needs to be based on the original games & not metal gear solid revengeance.
R888 - 8/30/2012, 4:23 AM
[frick] nolan, get Josss weldon
Fiffis - 8/30/2012, 5:03 AM
@grif
Agreed. Make a movie about a young Snake fighting through Outer Heaven and battling Big Boss at the end. I have felt that the original Metal Gear needed a remake or a movie or something.
toco89 - 8/30/2012, 5:05 AM
Mark Walberg could be a good choice for Solid Snake.

I'd believe him more as a soldier than Damon and definitely Affleck. Even though Damon has Bourne to his name. If you read the books, Bourne is actually supposed to be really good looking guy with soft features, which doesn't aptly describe Damon, but Walberg looks rougher like Snake.

Both actors are the same age as Snake more or less, but Walberg not only LOOKS like Snake, he's a stronger physical specimen than Damon, and he's actually from streets. Been to prison and all.

Hugh Jackman might make a good Liquid Snake, or a sissy Solid Snake.

I like the guy and all, but even after working out, a scruffy beard and cold showers, I never bought him as rough. Much less a badass.

KingEmperor - 8/30/2012, 5:07 AM
As much as I want to see a Metal Gear game translated into a movie, I kind of don't want this to happen.
toco89 - 8/30/2012, 5:14 AM
Kurt Russell for Solidus.LOL

If not Ray Winstone would do nicely.
Robert - 8/30/2012, 5:20 AM
Kurt Russell is the original Snake. I feel as if the video game creators got their Snake from the Escape From New York and Escape from L.A. movies.
GuardianAngel - 8/30/2012, 5:24 AM

I hear Christian Bale is a huge Metal Gear Solid fan and had been talking about wanting to play Solid Snake.
Maxi91291 - 8/30/2012, 5:32 AM
Robert, Toco

Kurt Russell would be a sweet old Big Boss ... The eyepatch + he is old enough
sameoldthing - 8/30/2012, 5:39 AM
Hugh Jackman would do nicely but is caught up in the Wolverine franchise.
If The Wolverine does well he will do several more films I'm sure..that's his bread & butter.

Now Christan Bale needs a new franchise..he could pull it off.
No candy ass young Hollywood pricks, only someone with a bit of age & grit will work.
Maxi91291 - 8/30/2012, 5:42 AM
sameold

That depend on which story they want to tell ... if they go with the old metal gears 1 or 2 then they will need a young Solid Snake
Maxi91291 - 8/30/2012, 5:42 AM
or even MGS 1
DevilHulk666 - 8/30/2012, 5:43 AM
My favorite game franchise, don't laugh people but Keanu Reeves with a beard could work?
MetropolisMarvel - 8/30/2012, 5:46 AM
Kiefer Sutherland as Solid Snake
Maxi91291 - 8/30/2012, 5:54 AM
Even Tom Selleck would make a sweet Big Boss :D
Dedpool - 8/30/2012, 5:58 AM
Bout Damn Time!!Kurt Russel for Old Snake, Jackman or Crowe for younger snake.
DevilHulk666 - 8/30/2012, 5:58 AM
Matt Damon no way, and Hugh's starting to get on my nerves, Bale could rock it
DevilHulk666 - 8/30/2012, 6:04 AM
who's gonna play the bad guys? Psycho mantis, Ocelot, Vamp etc,
Maxi91291 - 8/30/2012, 6:09 AM
Jeremy Irons for Mantis
toco89 - 8/30/2012, 6:10 AM
@Robert

Kojima has stated that Solid Snake was indeed based on Snake Plisken. Kojima as a fan of the movie series.

In MGS2 Snake took the name Plisken for a good part of the game.
DevilHulk666 - 8/30/2012, 6:14 AM
Karl Urban could work
toco89 - 8/30/2012, 6:21 AM
Not Karl Urban. Seriously no. I like the guy and everything but no.
DevilHulk666 - 8/30/2012, 6:22 AM
with the right cast and director this could be huge, like Avengers huge
Maxi91291 - 8/30/2012, 6:23 AM
@Monkeyballs3

Video games level : Japan
Maxi91291 - 8/30/2012, 6:43 AM
yeah .. and Tom Hiddleston as Naomi Hunter
fettastic - 8/30/2012, 6:46 AM
I never understood the love for this series.

I played the original Metal Gear on 8-bit Nintendo. It was essentially a clone of the Commando game, but with more gadgets.

I'm not sure if I played Metal Gear Solid, but a friend told me Metal Gear Solid II was like the best game of all time, so I tried it. Some of the action was fun and interesting, but the damn movies were a complete chore. I remember one was at least 10 minutes long! Are you kidding me? Then the little window that showed calls or texts or something would go on and on with random crap that had nothing to do with the game. I remmebr one particular exchange was the wife (or girlfriend) asking me to go get bread from the store. My time is being wasted with garbage like this?

And Solid Snake didn't seem very interesting to me. Just a Japanese interpretation of what they think an American military guy is like with a heavy Escape from New York filter. Just came off as silly G.I. Joe type stereotyping to me.
toco89 - 8/30/2012, 6:54 AM
I want something crazy.

-Start with Outer Heaven first, with flashbacks.
-The sequel will be a prequel of the first two games.
-Then MGS2.
-Then MGS3, or MGS2 then 4 with flashbacks of 3 in both.

I love Volgen and his crazies but I want the more recent history explored more, even though by itself MGS3 would make a great movie, starting with that would establish the original Snake as the protagonist of the series rather than Solid Snake and original Snake's as a backdrop to his story.

I want the first sequel a prequel because there will be a lot of questions about Snake, and in Outer Heaven they would be about who is Big Boss and Grey Fox, but more importantly to the general audience, who are they to SOLID SNAKE.
toco89 - 8/30/2012, 7:01 AM
@fettastic

I'm sorry to be the one to tell, even though I think you already know,...
You didn't get it.

Maybe if you play the first one. If you dont understand the backstory, and pay A LOT of attention (because that's why we love it, the story. The gameplay is cool and everything, but it's just a conduit for the story.) THEN maybe you'll understand.

Twin Snakes was MGS1 for the Gamecube. Much better graphics than PS1.
