It was only just yesterday when news broke that Michael Arndt had written a treatment for Star Wars: Episode VII, and today it has been confirmed that Arndt not only wrote the treatment, but is also writing the screenplay. StarWars.com, in conjunction with Disney and Lucasfilm, has issued an official statement:

As pre-production of Star Wars: Episode VII begins, Lucasfilm has confirmed that award-winning writer Michael Arndt will write the screenplay for the new Star Wars film. As revealed in the ongoing video series posted here on StarWars.com, Kathleen Kennedy and George Lucas have begun story conferences with Arndt. Arndt won an Academy Award® for Best Original Screenplay for writing Little Miss Sunshine (2006), and was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay for writing Toy Story 3 (2010).

Arndt is quite the prize, as he is not only an Oscar winner (Little Miss Sunshine), but also a huge fan of Star Wars. But then again, who isn't? His admiration for the original trilogy usually spills over into his lectures on screenplays, referring to the Return of the Jedi's ending as "Masterful." May the force be with him.

Super12 - 11/9/2012, 5:47 PM
Love it. This is good news. And the main reason I'm so ok with it? Toy Story 3 made me shed tears in the theater. It was powerful, especially if you'd grown up watching those movies. I can only imagine what he'll do with something like Star Wars
ManofSteel22 - 11/9/2012, 5:52 PM
man,id like to see the more dedicated star wars fan do a marathon when this new trilogy is over lol
FOOM - 11/9/2012, 5:59 PM
Could it actually be that fans will get the Star Wars movies they've always deserved? Imagine, Star Wars made by people who actually know how to write for and direct quality films. And from Disney??
Who would have thought?

I loved both little miss sunshine and toystory 3 but has this guy really proven himself to the point of us entrusting a star wars movie with him? I dont know. Im probably just over thinking it. He'll do great
Nemeres - 11/9/2012, 6:33 PM
Guys, I can totally feel it - this movie's going to be what fans were so sure they were going to get in 1999.
Durf - 11/9/2012, 6:43 PM
@MrEko: Yeah that would be the ultimate *facepalm* moment for WB.
RedeyeJedi - 11/9/2012, 6:55 PM
Well, at the very least, he's not a hack. But only time will tell if he's the right guy for Star Wars. I sincerely hope that's the case.
bazinga85 - 11/9/2012, 6:57 PM
"That's no moon. It's a space-station" I can see it now,lol...great choice by Disney btw
jjk2814 - 11/9/2012, 6:57 PM
Yes! This is great! Perfect. I was hoping the rumors were true. Lets look at it this way...

Little Miss Sunshine is known as one of those movies that at the surface, wouldn't be for everyone. The dark humor, the druggie grandpa, a lot of people would be turned off by it, but that was a movie that makes you care so deeply for the characters and makes a bizarre situation completely relatable and lovable.

Then with Toy Story 3 he showed that he can step into a beloved film series and find the voice of all the characters AND take the direction of the series into an exciting, thrilling conclusion.

He is a damned fine screenwriter. Just what we should want.

ok , so i am living up in the hills of Nor. Cal. usa and this is exciting because my sexy bitc# and i believe whole heartedly that we have a wookie that has made this are home. maybe a few of them . we got prints and tracks and hair samples and the craiziest tree formations that are appearing out of nowhere. my lady said that we should use my projector to marathon the Star Wars set on my 10' screen outside to see how they respond to Chewie! Yes!!! this is a perfect storm if you ask me :) Shibby is going to be in full fledged BabE Fett costume that eve ;P
Jlocklin - 11/9/2012, 7:04 PM
I'm ok with this... for now.
PeterParker1991 - 11/9/2012, 7:18 PM
Good news. Still got my opinion about Disney, but Toy Story 3 was amazing so this is a step in the right direction. Just don't screw this up Disney!!
DaenerysTargaryen - 11/9/2012, 7:29 PM

rockerdude22 - 11/9/2012, 7:49 PM
Loved Toy Story 3! I'm sure this guy will do great!
TheAbomination - 11/9/2012, 8:00 PM
Now if you can just get Brad Bird to direct, you'll be on the right track.
