In November, the Science Channel broadcast a special Firefly reunion show, Firefly: Browncoats Unite. The one-hour special was a huge success for the network as it pulled in 1.2 million viewers, making it the channel's most-watched Sunday night ever. During the show the cast (Sean Maher, Summer Glau, Nathan Fillion, Adam Baldwin, Alan Tudyk, Morena Baccarin, Gina Torres and Jewel Staite) and crew discussed the well-deserved cult following that Firefly has established since it first aired a decade ago. Also, deleted scenes were shown, and three of them have been been uploaded for you to view below.

I have to be honest, it's a good thing I don'thave a sister that looks like Summer Glau because it could have made to a very complicated and confusing family life...

theomegasanction - 1/4/2013, 3:19 PM
if i had to pick one tv series that could be brought back for new episodes it would be Firefly.
@nailbiter, thanks for keeping the state of Kentucky the go-to-state for hillbilly references in our country. i like what you post, so no hard feelings. i actually think that Kentucky's claim to fame has now become being the "hillbilly state"; got to take what you can get i guess
Ghaleonausa - 1/4/2013, 3:46 PM
@theomegasanction I could not agree more, It was a shame that it only lasted one season

This article sums up US society and its view on ignorance and intolerance within it's own country quite nicely. "Joke about Kentucky Rednecks who sleep with their sister"?? No probs! "People from the South are easy targets for that, and best of all, generally no one seems to care and finds it funny"!

I'm Canadian and I find it sad that many people in the US find it fun to insult, put down or negatively label specific parts of their own country.

Now... if there's been a study done and it has shown that per capita, Kentucky has the largest amount of brother/sister "relations" then I take it back! But assuming there isn't one, this article is very dissapointing on many levels.

CrimsonReign - 1/5/2013, 3:43 AM
Funny how the last thing that it is still okay to insult are poor fat white southern males. Make fun of any other group and...

Splenda, "Blonde jokes" are no where similar to labeling a state as a place that incest happens. Big difference.

I'm FAR from the PC police and I'll poke fun and make comments about people and sub-cultures just like anyone else, but when you group people IE; Chinese can't drive, mexicans only eat tacos, blacks aren't academic etc; you are 100% WRONG and I find it extremely ignorant and simply lazy if your intention is to make a joke about a disturbing subject.

Believe me, I don't feel this way from this one editorial alone, many in the US find it "OK" to bash the south and I find that is a problem within the US and its unity... but I'm Canadian so what do I know.

Anywho, just a personal pet peeve but having fun and discussions like this are healthy so back to our regularily scheduled programmimg with CBM's and "boobies" ;-)

xcan28@ Just how in the world are we going to come across these statistics, you speak of. If you were a southern American and you'd fvcked your sister, would you admit that in a statistic-generating questionaire?
I think that humans tend to use jokes like this to communicate information, in a way. We joke about Mexivcans only ever eating Tacos (which is, of course, ridiculous and not true) to communicate the information that Tacos are a Mexican food. It's the same with the dp south and incest. It's just a stigma that hasn't gone away. You're right it probably is not true, in the slightest, anymore. But it is more likely in underdeveloped and poorer areas that incest would occur. For one thing there is a whole lot less pussy around, so what else are you gonna do? You live on a farm, in the middle of nowhere, with little access to education, population or media (obviously I don't mean the deep south of today) and you're a horny teenaged virgin boy in a hot climate and your sister is unmistakably hot and scantily clad and she is also a horny teenaged virgin and there are no other boys around... y'know? Compared to the kind of background that you're used to in modern day Canada, you can see how incest would be much more likely and a tad more excusable in that situation. I'm pretty sure that this stigma probably came from a few real-life occurances that circulated via hearsay and were probably even exaggerated by conjecture.
And that's why we joke that they [frick] their sisters in the south.
Also, you said it yourself, you are a bit removed from the south. As am I, I'm a Brit. But while the US has rednecks, the UK has chavs, so I can relate to the fact that a lot of the discrimination stems from fear which in turn stems from the fact that a lot of these rednecks are probably dangerous and as such a tad scary.
Besides, like foxforce5@ said; If Summer Glau was your sister, you might not fvck her ('cause she'd be your sister and that's just not done), but the idea wouldn't be entirely unnattractive.
xcan28 - 1/5/2013, 1:29 PM
Duke, I spend a lot of time across North America for work so I am very familiar with the southern states, but my concern to this article is the acceptance of "It's Kentucky so there must be a whole lot of incest".

Every country has a sub-culture (region, religion, culture etc;) and they all rip into each other, that's standard for every country. BUT I've yet to see a western country that allows and even encourages the "bashing" of a certain group of people like some of the media and a group of people do in the US for individuals living in the South. Joking about things like incest in a particular state 'crosses the line' for me, and the seemingly acceptance to these jokes, ESPECIALLY for people living in the US, is what disapoints me.

Anywho, my piece has been said so everyone enjoy your Saturday! ;-)
