CONFIRMED: Carter Burwell No Longer Scoring THOR 2; Marvel Unhappy With Alan Taylor?

A member of the website Film Score Monthly, Ford A. Thaxton, has a reputation for posting factual information and he reveals that Carter Burwell is no longer composing Thor: The Dark World, and Marvel isn't pleased with director Alan Taylor.

Last month, it was announced that Carter Burwell was composing the score for his first superhero film, Thor: The Dark World. Carter is a veteran to film scores; including work on True Grit, Fargo, Where the Wild Things Are, and No Country for Old Men. Many had assumed that Patrick Doyle, the composer for the first Thor film, would return, but that didn't happen.

So what's going on? Well, a few days ago some members of Film Score Monthly noticed that Carter Burwell had removed Thor: The Dark World imagery and information from his website. Soon after, Ford A. Thaxton stepped in with a rather shocking bit of info:

"FYI, I checked with a REALLY WELL INFORMED SOURCE and it was confirmed. Carter is off the film. It also appears so is the director who seems to have been asked to take a long vacation until AFTER the film opens. I've head one replacement name being mentioned which would be a very interesting replacement and is a VERY TALENTED composer as well. We'll see if he gets the gig." - Ford A. Thaxton

Normally a member's comment on a message board doesn't carry much weight, but after digging around Mr. Thaxton has quite the reputation for posting info that ends up being spot on. Of course, that doesn't mean that the info above is right, and I would treat it as merely a rumor.

Another bit of info:

Christopher Willis, who helped compose music for Twilight: Breaking Dawn 2 and X-Men First Class, tweeted just a week ago that he was beginning to work on Thor: The Dark World with Carter Burwell. It would seem odd that he would come on board with so much rumored turmoil. Or, quite possibly there is no turmoil, and this just an internet rumor that is gonna get out of hand.

THOR: THE DARK WORLD is being directed by Alan Taylor ("Game of Thrones") and will be released November 8, 2013. Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman, Rene Russo, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Zachary Levi, Jaimie Alexander, Ray Stevenson, Kat Dennings, Christopher Eccleston, and Idris Elba.

Was sitting on this yesterday, hoping some more evidence would pop up by now. I hope the Taylor bit isn't true. I'm all for a new composer however.
Omarvls - 5/27/2013, 8:39 AM
This movie is going to be GREAT period
DaenerysTargaryen - 5/27/2013, 8:39 AM
Oh Marvel.....man this movie has a lot of troubles. What with the first director quitting, the rumors of the cast not wanting to return, and now this. Geez
Vaportrail - 5/27/2013, 8:39 AM
Sheesh. Sounds like Incredible Hulk all over again.
What's the deal, Marvel? Are they difficult, or are you?
rocky - 5/27/2013, 8:40 AM
Last thing I want to hear about my co-most anticipated film of the year
GetsugaTensho22 - 5/27/2013, 8:43 AM
This is obviously untrue. These big time studios are NOT run by pubescent girls who keep arguing and throwing hissy fits like this. They're run by mature, reasonable adults. UGH, people who come up with stupid rumors like this annoy me to no end.
AlexanderLykins - 5/27/2013, 8:44 AM
I love the MCU but everything behind the scenes regarding these movies, besides maybe Joss Whedon, makes me sick to my stomach.
Ashdm - 5/27/2013, 8:44 AM
Really expecting a lot from this but it is not a good sign if the director's been kicked... Hope this is rumour stays a rumour
Omarvls - 5/27/2013, 8:45 AM
@Intruder
I agree with you 100%
This are rumors that won't matter after Thor DW becomes a mega hit
bfletcher6147 - 5/27/2013, 8:46 AM
Its like there is negative news about Marvel every week. Anyone else think its just BS because people are pissed about their ridiculous success?
AlexanderLykins - 5/27/2013, 8:47 AM
Oh yeah, I like Jon Favreau as well.
AlanWarlock - 5/27/2013, 8:47 AM
Think about it, though - Favreau is the only director right now with more than one Marvel film under his belt. Marvel switched up for the sequels to Cap and Thor. Obviously, Whedon will be back for "Avengers 2," but Marvel's not afraid to look around for someone else when necessary - Don Cheadle as Rhodey, the replacement Fandral for "Thor: The Dark World," etc.
Newbus - 5/27/2013, 8:48 AM
Intruder - "Strange how all these rumors are starting up just when a make or break film for DC/WB is about to be released. Hmmm."

Yep, first it was IM3, Thor 2 is next in line, the the Quicksilver/Scarletwitch issue now I expect the whole cast of Captain America 2 to go on strike.
MrCBM56 - 5/27/2013, 8:48 AM
Treat this with a grain of salt guys.
SageMode - 5/27/2013, 8:50 AM
INTRUDER

Exactly. How conveniently arisen its become that all these negative-toned rumors are circling the web a month-to-weeks before MOS hit the theaters.
xBlaze96x - 5/27/2013, 8:50 AM
It might be so or it might not. I wasn't really into the trailer all that much, it didn't really surprise me.
LucasMend - 5/27/2013, 8:51 AM
Marvel is like a little kid who is never happy.
SpideyQuad - 5/27/2013, 8:52 AM
My focus is way beyond this. GotG BABE!
ALegendaryPanda - 5/27/2013, 8:53 AM
People are really blaming WB/DC for this?! [frick]ing hell this place is dumber and dumber.
TheAbomination - 5/27/2013, 8:53 AM
Trouble in paradise again? Oh Marvel...
thewonderer - 5/27/2013, 8:54 AM
Heres the problem:

1. Marvel Studios wants all the money

2. Every person hired wants their fair share of money

3. Conflict
Seejay - 5/27/2013, 8:54 AM

That is good news. X-Men First Class had a nice soundtrack.

InfiniteMonkey - 5/27/2013, 8:55 AM
Rumours, nothing but rumours...

Cue, dumbass music for the believers.
DefcoN - 5/27/2013, 8:55 AM
I don't want to believe this (especially the info on Alan Taylor), but it's starting to worry me.
As for the soundtrack, I wanted Doyle to return and keep the music continuity. If this is his chance then I'll be glad.
PLUSH - 5/27/2013, 8:55 AM
Shit happens.
SageMode - 5/27/2013, 8:56 AM
BFLETCHER

You're not the only one that thinks this is just a ploy to make people discouraged with Marvel Studios. You'd be surprised how the competition or the fans of the competition will go to see the guys on top fall. Marvel Studios is at the top of the game right now and thy have a huge target on their backs. They have 2 movies to hit the Billion Dollar Club in just a little over 5 years. That's NEVER been done before
rgaona - 5/27/2013, 8:56 AM
@SupermansBeard Come out on top like they did with Green Lantern lmao ok. Let's be real Nolan is the man who makes WB look good when he decides not to do anymore superhero films for them we'll see how good they are. Man of Steel looks great because Nolan is the Godfather behind making sure Snyder has good input. WB is terrible at making comic book movies without Nolan.
TheAbomination - 5/27/2013, 8:57 AM
And if you're blaming DC/WB for Marvel's troubles, you need to grow the fvck up already and stop being a blind Marvelite.
AlexanderLykins - 5/27/2013, 8:57 AM
This is clearly WB/DC's fault!
jessepostal - 5/27/2013, 8:58 AM
Some of you act like Marvel is the only studio who has these problems. Every studio does, its a business and this is their product. If they don't like whats being produced, its their money, their baby, they can do what ever they want to protect, save, or make the best of THEIR project. That doesn't make them bad in any way. Its a business!
valeriesghost - 5/27/2013, 9:00 AM
as much as i like there movies, unless you're RDJ or Hiddleston it seems that the studio can be a bitch to work for a times
ALegendaryPanda - 5/27/2013, 9:01 AM
[frick] I just ran out of milk! Damnit WB/DC it's all your fault!
SpideyQuad - 5/27/2013, 9:01 AM
SupermansBeard, dream much buddy??? I love your unbias assessment on the WB/DC situation.

So what's next from your favorite studio? How will they move forward on their "strategical position"? I'm oh so curious...

... another Batman film perhaps? Please tell me what's next and why us dummies don't know yet. Hmmm
Newbus - 5/27/2013, 9:01 AM
TheAbomination - "And if you're blaming DC/WB for Marvel's troubles, you need to grow the fvck up already and stop being a blind Marvelite."

Maybe there isn't any trouble in the first place.
Filming ended in December 2012, we've had a trailer and Kevin Feige was happy with Alan Taylors direction a few weeks so what could possibly have changed? Maybe someone with a very vivid imagination.
GetsugaTensho22 - 5/27/2013, 9:02 AM
@Nibs: No, it's because i know what reasonable , mature adults act like . Maybe if some of you grew up, you'd know what i'm talking about, instead of living in your stupid paranoid fantasies like Intruder and SageMode.
AlexanderLykins - 5/27/2013, 9:03 AM
@nibs
Listen, I'm all for speaking the truth and keeping a level head but Iron Man 3 was a critical and commercial success. You may not have liked it but most critics do and it made over a billion dollars.
DoubleD - 5/27/2013, 9:03 AM
Why they picked Alan Taylor to direct Thor was always mystery to me. 0% experiece directing films.

CAREER IN MOVIE DIRECTING:

Palookaville
The Emperor's New Clothes
Kill the Poor

And that gave him experiece to direct Thor: The Dark World
AlexanderLykins - 5/27/2013, 9:08 AM
@LEVITIKUZ
I think you may be on to something. Your words are so profound!
DoubleD - 5/27/2013, 9:08 AM
LEVITIKUZ,, I hope DC stays with WB because that we are quaranteed more Marvel comic movies over DC.

Your right WB really don't make comic book movies, they rather be more open to the general public
SpideyQuad - 5/27/2013, 9:08 AM
Ooh Abomination I believe you just intimidated "everyone" over to your side of thought!

I love how you sloap heads blindly throw any support towards a corp that only wants your money. Talk about sheep!
