MAN OF STEEL Concept Art: Kal-El's Starcraft, Superman's “S” Shield & Faora's Helmet

The website, Film Sketchr, just posted an interview with Peter Rubin, that includes Man of Steel concept art of Jor-El's Warkite, baby Kal-El's spacecraft and Superman's insignia. Also, Andrei Riabovitchev's design for Faora's (Antje Traue) helmet.

Film Sketchr has conducted a lengthy and fascinating interview with concept artist, Peter Rubin, in which they discuss his contributions on Zack Snyder's Man Of Steel.
Film Sketchr: What kind of things did you design for the film?
Peter Rubin: I conceptualized a lot of the Kryptonian tech in 3D, often in collaboration with other artists working in 2D. Most importantly to me, the "S" glyph, and The Starcraft, were entirely, or mostly, mine.

Plus whole lot of smaller stuff, like the control panels that Jor-El and Lara use. The stasis pods in the Scout Ship. The device that cradles Kal-El in his father's laboratory and absorbs the Codex, before he's put into the Starcraft. Those ubiquitous standing control panels. All of that came primarily from me, with guidance from Alex.

Film Sketchr asked about the process and the challenges that Peter Rubin encountered while designing the new "S" Shield, here is an excerpt from his response:
...we went to Art Nouveau works of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, everything from architectural facades to bookplates to ladies' hairbrushes. Art Nouveau designers assumed that nothing could ever be as beautiful as what nature creates. We tried to be as true to that ideal as we could.

There came a point in the process when it became clear to me that Alex was counting on me not to simply dimensionalize the things we'd done in 2D, but to make the Art Nouveau thing my own, really understand it on a physical level, and bring that to the table. I spent a few days really working on it, taking it to the nth degree, trying to make it part of my hand-eye repertoire. Shout out to Chris Strother, our art department researcher, who is awesome, and who sort of took me by the hand and showed me the path. In the end the work was, funnily enough, unusable, because it was too slavish to the 19th century, but by the time I was done I had the style down. It worked out in my favor, because when Alex (McDowell) and Zack (Snyder) decided they needed a new approach to the glyph, the El family crest, Alex came to me, because I was able to reflect that style most effectively.

We started by throwing open the door to almost anything. I must have created more than thirty very different shields. The only rule was that it had to fit in with Alex's preferred aesthetic. No straight lines, only graceful curves. Even the exterior frame is curved, although we came close to breaking the rule for that for a bit. There are probably some who would have preferred a radical departure from the past, but I regarded it as my particular challenge to make this version both something new, and a loving homage to the image of Superman I've carried in my head my whole life. I was extremely lucky, in that Zack and Alex instinctively saw exactly what I saw in it.

Concept Art by Andrei Riabovitchev

In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Henry Cavill) is a young twenty-something journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond his imagination. Transported years ago to Earth from Krypton, a highly advanced, distant planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question 'Why am I here?' Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Diane Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner), Clark discovers having extraordinary abilities means making difficult decisions. When the world is in dire need of stability, an even greater threat emerges. Clark must become a Man of Steel, to protect the people he loves and shine as the world’s beacon of hope – Superman.

Man Of Steel was directed by Zack Snyder, from a script written by David Goyer. The cast includes: Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Russell Crowe, Ayelet Zurer, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Michael Shannon, Antje Traue, Christopher Meloni, Harry Lennix, Laurence Fishburne and Richard Schiff. How come both of the Superman origin movies have Kal's baby penis in them?
Jollem - 6/17/2013, 2:40 PM
boys usually have those kind of things
AsianVersionOfET - 6/17/2013, 2:49 PM
Cool stuff.
aRandomSinisterClone - 6/17/2013, 2:51 PM

QuietStorm - 6/17/2013, 2:59 PM
I'd literally be happy if they just had pictures of faora inserted into all of the conept art. Damn she's hot in that suit. Can the cosplay begin please?
TheOneAboveAll - 6/17/2013, 4:32 PM
@Froggy

Kingdom Come is too epic to be on screen, it would just be an artfest of beautiful visuals too much awesomeness for the eyes to behold. You would need a kubrick like filmmaker to make it

We Brazilians are awaiting launch in July ... Tragic ... It will take a lot ...

Man Of Steel. A very awesome movie.
All the complainers are clearly Vitamin C deprived Anal Retentives.
The Action was the Best and Casualties are Casualties. I did not care if fictional people died. Even in the comics they die. LOL!
Can't wait for the next one!
Cavill and Shannon were intense.
Anal Retentive Haters are always going to be Anal Retentives. LOL
ALmight - 6/17/2013, 5:20 PM
@InfiniteMonkey, it is a pretty awesome movie, but most people's complaints are valid. Superman's lack of regard for life in the movie is a problem, I've loved Superman my whole life and I have a problem with it.
Bodwulf - 6/17/2013, 5:30 PM
Man of Steel reminds me of Godzilla 1998. It has a monster that looks like Godzilla but it does not act anything like Godzilla. Man of Steel has a guy who looks like Superman, but he does not act like Superman. That being said it is a good solid movie.
NextHero08 - 6/17/2013, 5:44 PM
agreed @Bodwulf
RGINLA - 6/17/2013, 5:57 PM
@ZackSnyder I was more terrified of General Zod & six Kryptonians than Loki w/the entire Chitauri army!!! @ManofSteel_2013 @ComicBook_Movie
ALmight - 6/17/2013, 6:26 PM
@RGINLA, who wouldn't be terrified in a world where Superman is more concerned with throwing punches than saving people?
Howlett - 6/17/2013, 6:29 PM
I love the designs that they make from their Kryptonian outfits and their space ships, overall MOS is by far the best CBM this year.

When does superman disregard lives of innocent? He is freaking protecting them from the threat of Zod, Faora and friends! And i always know from the glimpse where all Metropolis people are fled and run, they basically have leave the buildings. If not, than they dont pay attention to the emergency instructions when things like this happens.

Yeah @bodwulf and @nexthero08: i see that also from avengers, do you think they're battle in New York didnt cause any casualities? And how THOR fights brutally with Hulk in that craft, do you think there wont be any casualities there? And how Bats harmed those cops in Begins and the train destructions? And killing Harvey to save the boy. How about Keaton Bat the killer? Yeah right.
NostalgicYouth - 6/17/2013, 7:35 PM
Faora was too sexy in the movie. She had the best scenes in the movie; and god she was badass.
nowtheresaBATman - 6/17/2013, 7:55 PM
@RGINLA
Totally. Loki looked like the wicked witch of the west w/ a broomstick in his hand flying around on one of those Shitauri gliders. Real scary lol
Bodwulf - 6/17/2013, 8:28 PM
@Thosemortalmen I do not have a problem with the casualties or the destruction. I am talking of the way the actor played Clark/Supes. Seemed like a great guy and he was struggling with his power, but the only time he felt like Clark to me was in the flashbacks and the last line about "being from Kansas and that is as American as you can get." Still liked the movie. Not hatin' on it at all. Still can't help but think what Brandon Routh's Superman would have been like in this film.
Inhuman - 6/17/2013, 9:07 PM
Man Of Steel - General Zod
Man Of Steel 2 - Lex Luthor and Metallo
Man Of Steel 3 - Brainiac and Doomsday
xXkryptoniteXx - 6/17/2013, 9:16 PM
The choice for the kryptonian's culture and technology design looks very odd. It could have been better but I can over look it. What's done is done. Now I can't wait for the story to continue.

Lex with doomsday for part 2 and in part 3 have brainiac. That would be a cool choice but WB just do it right with better screen play and dialogue. None of that forced job, espcially the kiss between the two. That was very forced and of not than not enough character build up to justify the romance between.

Realistically Superman should be dating wonder woman. I can see it now in heshe's how it should have ended. Them making fun of superman carrying for the humans like pets. Lol. Good movie still, just can't wait for them to dissect it for jokes.
JULEZ13 - 6/17/2013, 9:47 PM
The designs for MOS were freaking amazing! They definitely were part of what made the film so great!

I saw it for the second time today. It was just as epic. Best CBM of all time.
MarkV - 6/17/2013, 9:51 PM
There is no cohesive Kryptonian design theme.
aRandomSinisterClone - 6/17/2013, 10:05 PM
that Kingdom Come photoshop job is [frick]ing great.
HeadPool420 - 6/17/2013, 10:23 PM
You guys gotta remember this was his first outing as Superman. Lots of room for character growth. Patience.;)
Man0fSteel69 - 6/18/2013, 12:10 AM
Cool stuff! The 'S' shield is dope!

@NostalgicYouth I completely agree, bro.

@Inhuman511 Fingers crossed! I would say maybe put Brainiac in the second movie with Lex Luthor and Metallo. Great villain choices though, dude.

@JULEZ13 I only saw it once, so you're beating me right now, haha! I plan to see it five more times! It was that good!!!
113 - 6/18/2013, 12:50 AM
@hope420

You're 100% right. This was the set-up of a set-up. MoS 2 (which should be called Man of Tomorrow) will truly allow character development of Clark, Lois, Perry, Jenny, etc...

I'm sure Lawrence signed on for multiple films, same with Diane Lane.
lucio7lopez - 6/18/2013, 12:55 AM
I want the art book. Too much awesomeness!
Inhuman - 6/18/2013, 2:20 AM
@manofsteel69

Thanks man! I figured Lex will have Kryptonite and Metallo is made out of Kryptonite so those 2 make a perfect match to face off against Superman and possibly Supergirl in Man Of Steel 2. Brainiac and Doomsday come from space so I thought Brainiac can unleash Doomsday since Doomsday is a mindless beast and Brainiac would be the mastermind and then Superman would have 2 gigantic showdowns first with Doomsday and then Brainiac in Man Of Steel 3.

.......and obviously you save Darkseid, Mongul, and Legion Of Doom for Justice League 1, 2, and 3 =D
Lockjaw - 6/18/2013, 6:15 AM
The designs weren't the problem with the movie. Just bad writing & editing.
figuresmaniac - 6/18/2013, 6:53 AM
Art book will be awesome...
Nubase - 6/18/2013, 2:01 PM
@SuperJagerNaut
