Quentin Tarantino’s Top 10 2013 Films So Far, Includes 1 Comic Book Movie & 1 Flop
Two-time Oscar-winner, Quentin Tarantino ("Django Unchained"), has revealed his top ten film of 2013, so far. The list includes one comic book movie and huge box office flop. Can you guess which films?
The Quentin Tarantino Archives has posted a list, created by screenwriter/director, Quentin Tarantino, containing his ten favorite films of 2013, so far. Keep in mind, they're listed in alphabetic order.
1. Afternoon Delight (Jill Soloway)
2. Before Midnight (Richard Linklater)
3. Blue Jasmine (Woody Allen)
4. The Conjuring (James Wan)
5. Drinking Buddies (Joe Swanberg)
6. Frances Ha (Noah Baumbach)
7. Gravity (Alfonso Cuarón)
8. Kick Ass 2 (Jeff Wadlow)
9. The Lone Ranger (Gore Verbinski)
10. This Is The End (Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg)
As you can see above, from our perspective, the most intriguing choices are, Kick-Ass 2 and The Lone Ranger. The inclusion of Kick-Ass 2 seems bit strange, as it represents the only comic book movie worthy of Tarantino's top ten. This means some bigger-budgeted comic book movies: The Wolverine, Iron Man 3, and Man of Steel didn't capture Quentin's interests. Although, if you dig a little deeper it isn't as shocking as it first seems. In 2010, Matthew Vaughn's Kick-Ass was the only comic book movie to make his top list that year. For those that our curious about Tarantino and other comic book movies that have made his favorite's lists, in 2011, Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class was selected. 2012, Quentin Tarantino's obligations to his own film, Django Unchained, kept him from making a list.
The other surprise, as mentioned above, is Disney's The Lone Ranger. A film that was trashed by critics and shunned by moviegoers. By most estimates, The Lone Ranger, Disney incurred a loss of $190 million. Maybe the biggest fallout from the film's failure at the box office, was long-time partnership between Disney Studios and Jerry Bruckheimer coming to an abrupt end. Perhaps the film will receive a bump in DVD sales by being included in Tarantino's list. We'll see.
Kick-Ass, Hit Girl and Red Mist return for the follow-up to 2010's irreverent global hit: Kick-Ass 2. After Kick-Ass' (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) insane bravery inspires a new wave of self-made masked crusaders, led by the badass Colonel Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey), our hero joins them on patrol. When these amateur superheroes are hunted down by Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse)—reborn as The Mother F%&*^r—only the blade-wielding Hit Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz) can prevent their annihilation.
When we last saw junior assassin Hit Girl and young vigilante Kick-Ass, they were trying to live as normal teenagers Mindy and Dave. With graduation looming and uncertain what to do, Dave decides to start the world's first superhero team with Mindy. Unfortunately, when Mindy is busted for sneaking out as Hit Girl, she's forced to retire—leaving her to navigate the terrifying world of high-school mean girls on her own. With no one left to turn to, Dave joins forces with Justice Forever, run by a born-again ex-mobster named Colonel Stars and Stripes.
Just as they start to make a real difference on the streets, the world's first super villain, The Mother F%&*^r, assembles his own evil league and puts a plan in motion to make Kick-Ass and Hit Girl pay for what they did to his dad. But there's only one problem with his scheme: If you mess with one member of Justice Forever, you mess with them all.
KICK-ASS 2 directed & written by Jeff Wadlow; based on the comic book created by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.. The cast includes: Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloë Moretz, Jim Carrey, Lyndsy Fonseca, Yancy Butler, Donald Faison, John Leguizamo, Lindy Booth and Olga Kurkulina. It lands in theaters August 16, 2013.
