Dark Phoenix Was Supposed To Kill Magneto In X-MEN: THE LAST STAND (2006)

X-Men: The Last Stand storyboards, created by Michael Anthony Jackson, reveal an unused scene involving Dark Phoenix/Jean Grey (Famke Janssen) vaporizing Magneto (Ian Mckellen) just as she did with Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart).

When Bryan Singer ("X-Men: Days of Future Past") left X-Men: The Last Stand to go off and direct Superman Returns, Brett Ratner ("Rush Hour") was had the keys to 20th Century Fox's X-Men franchise. The film is not well liked by X-Men fans, as several characters are killed off. The most controversial death scene would have to go to James Marsden's Cyclops who is unceremoniously killed off-screen near the beginning of the film. One scene that I thought was handled actually quite well, was the death of Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart). Xavier goes to confront Jean at her childhood home. He tries to re-establish the mental blocks he used to suppress her powers, but Jean's alter-ego, The Phoenix, is too strong. She unleashes her powers upon Xaviere by lifting him off his wheelchair and disintegrating him. Well, apparently at one time, The Phoenix was supposed to vaporize Magneto (Ian Mckellen) as well, as seen in Michael Anthony Jackson's storyboards below. Which is much different than the theatrical version, which had Beast (Kelsey Grammer) sneaking up behind Magneto during the final battle at Alcatraz and injecting him with "the cure."

Experience the awesome power of the X-Men's epic, final battle as the mutant revolution is upon them and it is time to take a stand. Join well known mutant heroes and villains and meet a host of all-new warriors - including Angel, Beast, Juggernaut and Colossus in this explosive adventure! After a controversial "cure" is discovered, mutants can hoose to retain their superhuman abilities or give up their unique gifts and become "normal." When peaceful mutant leader Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) clashes with his militant counterpart, Magneto (Ian McKellen), the battle lines are drawn for the war to end all wars. Bursting with non-stop action, spectacular special effects and exclusive special features, X-MEN THE LAST STAND is a force of nature that will blow you away!

X-Men: The Last Stand was directed by Brett Ratner, from a screenplay written by Simon Kinberg and Zak Penn. The cast included: Hugh Jackman as Logan / Wolverine, Halle Berry as Ororo Munroe / Storm, Patrick Stewart as Professor Charles Xavier, Anna Paquin as Marie / Rogue, Kelsey Grammer as Dr. Henry "Hank" McCoy / Beast, James Marsden as Scott Summers / Cyclops, Shawn Ashmore as Bobby Drake / Iceman, and Ellen Page as Kitty Pryde. The film earned $459 million at the world wide box office, against a budget of $210 million.

X3 was such a terrible terrible movie.
A huge waste.
CherryBomb - 12/21/2013, 1:14 PM
But Phoenix looks bad-ass on those images
MrCBM56 - 12/21/2013, 1:15 PM
Thank god they didn't. Charles and Erik gone. I'm not sure about that?
typicalfanboy - 12/21/2013, 1:16 PM
so the original end battle was going to be in dc not Alcatraz island?
McNyagano - 12/21/2013, 1:18 PM
Wait there was an X-Men 3? Wut?
nailbiter111 - 12/21/2013, 1:18 PM
crashrendar - apparently. and an unused Egypt scene.
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 12/21/2013, 1:22 PM
Singer would be [frick]ed
NovaCorpsFan - 12/21/2013, 1:22 PM
Egypt, eh? I smell foreshadowing!
Maestro - 12/21/2013, 1:22 PM
Definitely feels like an alternate reality. I think DOFP (going back into the past to fix things), might have been planned from the beginning.
gambgel - 12/21/2013, 1:26 PM
holly shit, that would have been awesome!!!

all the x-men fighting Phoenix on Washington, damm you Ratner

Thats what all fans wanted to see! and an aerial fight between Storm and Phoenix

agggh, this stupid director and studio
Odin - 12/21/2013, 1:30 PM
@NovaCorpsFan That's a top of Washington monument, not a pyramid. Sorry :)
nailbiter111 - 12/21/2013, 1:31 PM
Odin - oh, you might be right. i just thought it was a pyramid, but top of washington monument makes more sense.
Brainiac13 - 12/21/2013, 1:32 PM
If that happened........would've been a complete reboot and sorted the continuity out from scratch.
Ocelot - 12/21/2013, 1:32 PM
So Magneto was going to destroy the bridge and kill everyone on it instead of just moving it like he does in the actual film, probably explains why he was killed in the storyboards. It also looks like the X-MEN would try and take on Jean after she kills Magneto, I guess the target Magneto was after in these storyboards was a politician instead of Leech.

And also apparently Angel was supposed to actually do shit in the movie.
Maestro - 12/21/2013, 1:43 PM
The conclusion at the white house shown in this, instead of wherever they were in X3, would've made it a much better conclusion, imo.
Also, Angel having a more significant role would have been preferred.

Looking back at X1 & X2, Singer clearly would've made a better X3 film.
QuestiontheAnswer - 12/21/2013, 1:44 PM
Professor X is back so Magneto wouldn't really have died.

@CherryBomb
'But Phoenix looks bad-ass on those images'

Well, thank you cherry! Even though I still believe that my skin was awful in this movie. And so were my eyes. I looked so ugly in X3... [frick] Brett Ratner
Christuffer - 12/21/2013, 1:53 PM
Wow. I don't know whether or not that's better or not
DefcoN - 12/21/2013, 1:59 PM
Damn! Even Angel had a better role there!
ALegendaryPanda - 12/21/2013, 2:03 PM
Bad movie is bad. Can't wait for Days of Future Past though!
MrReese - 12/21/2013, 2:05 PM
Meh.
mgeoff88 - 12/21/2013, 2:07 PM
Wow... so as bad as X3 was, it could have been a whole lot worse.

Lol, at first I was like, "where the heck did that pyramid come from?"

Yes, that is the the top of the Washington Monument seeing how they are in DC instead of San Francisco in these storyboards.
CherryBomb - 12/21/2013, 2:10 PM
The only good thing about X3 was casting Ellen Page as Kitty.
Great casting.
MsDarkPhoenix - 12/21/2013, 2:11 PM
I just found out that it's Samuel L. Jackson's birthday today
CherryBomb - 12/21/2013, 2:11 PM
@TheDarkPhoenix

Haha, bad skin and eyes are nothing, you still rocked it girrrrl. ;)
KingNTheKong - 12/21/2013, 2:14 PM
X-Men: The Last Stand was on FX today. I watched it and I cried. Not because Cyclops died. Not because Prof. X died. Because I couldn't find the remote.
Nomis - 12/21/2013, 2:37 PM
I thought the casting of Kelsey Grammar as Hank McCoy was an excellent choice.

wilderfox2 - 12/21/2013, 2:55 PM
The only good thing about that movie was kelsey grammar as beast
gambgel - 12/21/2013, 3:06 PM
I loved both Kelsey, Ellen and Ben castings.

Its a shame Ratner did nothing memorable with such an awesome cast of actors and characters.

The movie didnt even have a 2 hours running time, Cheap ass Ratner!
Darlene1974 - 12/21/2013, 3:09 PM
The Phoenix Saga on its own should've been a big trilogy, 'Lord Of The Rings' Trilogy Style!!!.... Magneto & Storm wasn't up in the air a lot at all. Archangel wasn't in it much either :( ... And then they started killing killing killing.... i really really do not like it at all... They should've brought back Nightcrawler and Lady Deathstrike (which they shouldn't have killed, in the first bloody place, into X3 cos they were both pretty amazing in X2... but oh well, it's all done & dusted now...
They did ok with First Class. Let's see how DOFP gonna be. And then Apocalypse. ....
staypuffed - 12/21/2013, 3:10 PM
Retcon X3. Just get rid of it.
FoxForce5 - 12/21/2013, 3:13 PM
Wow! So glad this p.o.s. movie never got made...

Oh, wait; never mind. Thinking about this means it's time for me to go and cry in a corner again.
pointman - 12/21/2013, 3:18 PM
Ratner's X-men was better than singers.
lvcl - 12/21/2013, 3:21 PM
It´s the best FoX-Men movie at the box office with 459M$ Worldwide

The FoXverine couldn´t get that amount

The fight with Phoenix should be at The White House like in the storyboards

The traitor Bryan Singer left to direct Superman Returns
sinsear912 - 12/21/2013, 3:47 PM
pointman is trolling

@ Darlene1974 - If Singer would've been true to the source material in chronology order, the first 3 X-Men movies should have lead up to the Dark Phoenix saga.

1st X-Men movie - Charles Xaiver recruits the "new" X-Men to save his former students. It ends with the former leaves but Cyclops stay behind to help train the new team.

2nd X-Movie - Jean goes to visit the Scott at the school, plane goes down she is resurrected as Phoenix.

Introduce Shi'ar empire, and have it where Jean save the universe from Lilandra's Brother. Shi'ar nervous about Jean unlimited new powers.

3rd Movie - Introduce Kitty Pryde. Bring in the Hell Fire club fight X-men and jean goes Dark Phoenix and fights the X-men, only to be stop be Profesor X.

And last 3rd act be the Shi'ar bring Jean into the empire to judge the phoenix only for her to sacrifice herself in the end.

These should'e been the basis for the first 3 X-men movies and it would'e been EPIC!!!!

And the 4th movie should have been a translation of the the Day of the Future Past issues from the comics.
Nomis - 12/21/2013, 4:13 PM
@SlaveMasterFlexXxMas - Not in the hands of the right director/producer.

But If anything, it would make it seems everything was about Scott and Jean .

Which the Dark Phoenix Trilogy weas really about.
