For over 2 years the team at Industrial Light & Magic in San Francisco, Singapore and Vancouver worked tirelessly to bring Guillermo del Toro's science fiction epic "Pacific Rim" to life. This reel represents a taste of the visual effects work the team was tasked with in creating everything from monstrous Kaiju to the man-made Jaegers and the environments they are seen in. - ILMVisualFX

PACIFIC RIM SYNOPSIS - When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Pacific Rim was directed by Guillermo del Toro, from a script written by Travis Beacham. The cast includes Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Ron Perlman, Max Martini, Robert Kazinsky, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Diego Klattenhoff, and Brad William Henke. Now available on DVD & Blu-ray!

I was happy to see this, I just rewatched the film last week. It's amazing how much detail they put into these movies.

Nomis - Yup, that about sums it up. Guillermo has to learn about character development and dialogue.

ILM never wins.
Rest assured TF4 is going to be their bench mark work.

@ NB - In all seriousness, I think he does that when he want the characters and dialogue to carry the movie (See 'Pan's Labyrinth'), But I actually think he purposely "dumb down" Paciifc Rim so that the visual take first place.

@Nomis I think that's what everyone wants in a movie now, action, not story, or characters. I agree, this movie needed more development, but I enjoyed it, and unlike Josh's 1-Star, I give it a 4-Star, and I bought it on Blu-Ray.

SEQUEL I'D LOVE TO SEE SINGLE MANNED ROBOTS, MAYBE NOT BUILDNG SIZED MAYBE ARMIES OF 2 STORY HOUSE SIZED ROBOTS FACING A NEW ALIEN THREAT FROM THE "OUTER RIM".....MORE WITH THE ROBOTECH FEEL
Nomis - 1/7/2014, 1:14 PM
@ anthonyEstark - Certainly more so for a summer blockbuster than any other movies.

And Pacific Rim was what it was advertise to be. Giant Robots fighting Giant Monsters!

I walked in to see the movie knowing I wasn't getting 'the godfather' so I saw it just to see the VFX.

Persoanlly, I couldn't give it a 4 stars, because after a while the dumbness of the plot and characters get to me (a person can only take so much) but I gave it 3 just for the special effects alone.

1to10youLose - the wooden acting is right out of a Manga. That's an element that shouldn't be in there. Doesn't work in a live-action format.

this is what i've always said

just not "dumbing" it to make the visuals stand out part. i think that's a silly statement. you have to take into account the kinds of media he was taking from for the movie
anthonyEstark - 1/7/2014, 1:38 PM
After watching this movie, I could talk like Charlie Hunnam, and no one would know the difference. He sounded bored in the opening.
Jollem - 1/7/2014, 1:40 PM
i'm a sucker for voiceovers, and i liked this one better than junior's for iron 3. what was wrong with the plot development? there was plots and stuffs and they happened
Jollem - 1/7/2014, 1:46 PM
it didn't have oscar-caliber dialogue and performances. this is true
Jollem - 1/7/2014, 1:53 PM
manga, anime, godzilla movies, other kooky asian action movies. all that
Jollem - 1/7/2014, 1:54 PM
i think what everyone wants is constant one-liners and a poop or pee joke here and there
Jollem - 1/7/2014, 1:57 PM
weren't people complaining about batman not being in the batsuit and kicking ass the whole time in tdkr?
WakeOfMagellen - 1/7/2014, 2:02 PM
I looked forward to the movie and enjoyed it.
It was actually enjoyable to my wife which shocked me BIG TIME.
She's usually in to the "high brow" stuff :-p LOL

I dont know why people here think a movie can either be a big comedy, or a really serious movie...lets all pop a few chill pills and chill out, it aint really that serious...

NAILS, NOMIS,
I am a huge Kaiju fan, you guys are right, the movie looked good, I was highly disappointed in everything else. Plot written by a 5th grader.
RodimusPryme - 1/7/2014, 8:06 PM
This movie took advantage of rain, and other visual obstructions so much when it came to the Kaiju. Think, when do you ever see them clearly and direct? You don't. It was lazy work and a horrible movie. If I'd went into it expecting to see a b-movie script then I may have liked it, but I thought it was as bad as Batman and Robin.
heisei24 - 1/7/2014, 8:38 PM
The dumbest awesome movie ever made.
superbatspiderman - 1/8/2014, 11:15 AM
I just re-watched this movie last night and it is still really awesome. Granted the acting isn't the greatest except for Idris Elba and Charlie Hunnam but the movie still kicks ass. THe movie is what it says it is which is giant robots fighting giant monsters. They didn't advertise it as being anything more than that. I think of this movie as being a live action anime.
