Concept Art Of WB's Defunct AKIRA Live-Action Remake, OBLIVION & ENDER'S GAME

In 2002, Warner Bros. acquired rights to make a live-action remake of Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira. Plans for it didn't start to really materialize until 2008. That is when Irish short film director Ruairi Robinson ("The Last Days on Mars") was brought on board to direct. At that time, the script was being written by Gary Whitta ("The Book of Eli"), and Leonardo DiCaprio would've been one of the producers. Of course things fell apart and the project would end up in two other directors hands (Albert Hughes and Jaume Collet-Serra) before WB finally pulled the plug on it in 2012. Below, you will find several pieces of concept art that conceptual illustrator James Clyne created for Robinson's version of Akira. You'll also find some artwork that Clyne created for Tom Cruise's Oblivion and Gavin Hood's Ender's Game.

AKIRA concepts are awesome, looks like Chris Eva n's and JGL were used for likeness.
SuperCat - 2/8/2014, 6:18 PM
I would have seen this movie.
nailbiter111 - 2/8/2014, 6:19 PM
Interestein - yup, that's what it looks like. JGL was rumored for a part in the film back in the day, but I don't remember Chris being mentioned.
TheGambitFreakIsBatmanOfCBM - 2/8/2014, 6:27 PM
Well concept artist's usually are forced to start design production even if casting isn't confirmed (i.e., Jessical Biel as Viper, The Wolverine). Chris Evans was probably in talks.

Never seen the film. Looks [frick]ing cool though. Wish they woulda made it.
typicalfanboy - 2/8/2014, 6:32 PM
nice. jgl and evans would've been cool. it doesn't look shitty.
HeisenbergSaysRelax - 2/8/2014, 6:35 PM
Definitely see the resemblance. Chris Evans as Kaneda and JGL at Tetsuo would be awesome. The first two bits of art look awesome. Looks like they planned to go with a really large scale attack on the city from Tetsuo. I've always been concerned they would lessen his rampage if a film ever got made.

I am glad they did not make Akira. Some things are fine the way they are. Oblivion was kinda dull in my opinion like a 70's Sci-fi. Had the Logans Run-Thx1138 feel to it. Watchable just not memorable.
DrunkenNukem - 2/8/2014, 7:02 PM
i didnt like oblivion
Enphlieuwince - 2/8/2014, 7:07 PM
The Akira concept of the black guy must be based on Brandon J. McLaren

TheGambitFreakIsBatmanOfCBM - 2/8/2014, 7:20 PM
Oblivion was incredible. Visually and thematically amazing. There was so much underlying messages in that film.
typicalfanboy - 2/8/2014, 7:21 PM
keanu was going to be spike in a cowboy bebop live action, then that got scrapped since he's almost 50.
ALmazing - 2/8/2014, 7:43 PM
Really cool, but I am glad Akira didn't get Americanized.
SpiderFraud - 2/8/2014, 7:54 PM
It is taking way too long for a Akira movie. From the concept art, it could have been pretty good. I rather we do the movie before Japan, since they ruin movies with horrible CGI.
Ramiel - 2/8/2014, 7:55 PM
Shame Akira was scrapped. Sure would have nice to see Evans and JGL in the movie.
DeadpoolMikeyXD - 2/8/2014, 8:00 PM
Akira could have worked... I'm sure it would have sold worldwide if done right
MericawithanM - 2/8/2014, 8:03 PM
I recently saw Akira for the first time and I have to say it is one of the best animated movies I've ever seen. I would have loved to see a live action adaptation and I have a feeling this isn't the last we will hear about it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
thewolfx - 2/8/2014, 8:40 PM
Im glad this wasnt made cus hollywood would have [frick]ed it up just like every other anime property they have gotten so far.
ScorpioRisin - 2/8/2014, 9:09 PM
Thank god that didn't happen.
AGoodHonestMan - 2/8/2014, 9:15 PM
Thank god this movie didn't happen.
Tevii - 2/8/2014, 9:44 PM
Haters crack me up. Like there is any reason to be "thankful" this wasn't made. Lets pretend it was made.... Ok if it sucked, does that somehow take away from how great the manga and anime were? absolutely not.... So if it sucked we can always go back to the original to be happy..... But what if they made this and it was freakin AWESOME? Then we would have three ways o enjoy this amazing story...We just don't know how it would've ended up. Get over yourselves and your negative hate all the time
charlie2094 - 2/8/2014, 9:44 PM
Some great art!

Disappointed by Oblivion, but enjoyed Enders Game. Never seen Akira but have heard so much about it, will have to check it out at some point..
Vaportrail - 2/8/2014, 9:56 PM
I'm hoping WB figures out Akira, cuz the concept art at least looks spot on.
Hopefully along the way they'll also figure out that the Japanese culture isn't something that needed changing. Audiences that are going to see this film don't care about such things and they'll even earn points from the stubborn diehards who would've ignored it.
wbrowning79 - 2/8/2014, 10:47 PM
Look . okay. I've read the manga and watched the anime at least what seems like 20 times. I've even got kanedas jaket for [frick] sake. So you mean to tell me after all these years. After all these years on waiting and hoping for a good live action adaptation we get Americans... Neo- Manhattan... Tetsuo and kaneda are brothers... Kaneda is a bartender... Oh and their in their thirties apparently... And the concept art is good don't get me wrong it's awesome. These look like great action sequences and looks like the artist was TOTALLY respecting what katshurio otomo had created and I love them he we all do but we all haft to remember guys: This is concept art. Do you really think the director was going to this direction visually. Well maybe but judging by the script it reeeaaallyy seems unlikely. Hell,it feels like to me that after all I've seen about this movie it seems like Mr.Cline was the only freakin person who cared about this project and wanted to respect Katshurio otomo and watch the anime and read the manga. Mr. Cline is a visual genious, and I bet that his art was so genious that at some point hollywood was gonna roll their fat glutenous asses back at some point to check up on the development of the film was going to say "oh nope can't have this it's just to damn
good we can't have Somthing that respects the fans oh no no no no no, well we just haft to get rid of this right away. and mess it all up. I guarantee that's what happend. And maybe some disagreement about that or Somthing like that regurding respecting the original story is what led to the end of this remake and I'm glad about that I really am and I'm even happier that I get to look at this beautiful art and just imagine of an akira film were there are Japanese actors, were it's set in Neo- Tokyo, and we're kaneda is not a thirty year old bartender. And hey maybe this day will come maybe WB wi grow some balls and do a of this. But for now I'm just going to look at this art.
fistofthenorthstar - 2/8/2014, 10:56 PM
@wbrowning79

well said.
jimoakley666 - 2/8/2014, 11:07 PM
Looks good to me. And yeah, they look like Chris Evans and JGL.
KidGoku - 2/8/2014, 11:49 PM
That concept art is fantastic. Chris Evans and JGL would've been a great mix for the film as well. Dammit I feel like watching Akira now.
KidGoku - 2/8/2014, 11:51 PM
Akira can work. So can Fullmetal Alchemist.... and goddammit so can Dragon Ball Z
Bl00dwerK - 2/9/2014, 1:22 AM
A crappy live-action movie wouldn't have hurt the anime in the least 'cause it already sucks. Most overrated anime ever, imo. Fans are always telling people to watch Akira when they ask for opinions on what to watch, but they shouldn't...
N3lLiel - 2/9/2014, 1:52 AM
@wbrowning79

You, Sir, are my new hero!
AlSimmons - 2/9/2014, 4:38 AM
That Akira art looks fantastic. It might have worked if they had not Americanized it. The story is just too rooted in Japanese culture.
Durango95 - 2/9/2014, 5:26 AM
Travis....smh What the hell were they thinking?
thewolfx - 2/9/2014, 5:29 AM
@Bloofwerk

Gtfo
Jer3miah - 2/9/2014, 5:49 AM
Yeah, because Caucasian parents would name their son "Akira". >.>
Prime - 2/9/2014, 6:08 AM
Evans huh?
LocOps - 2/9/2014, 6:17 AM
Akira would only work as a live action film if it was shot for shot, 100% accurate to the original. To do that would be an amazing feat in itself.
jasonicus - 2/9/2014, 6:22 AM
Those American Akira pics just piss me off.
Badmuffin - 2/9/2014, 7:04 AM
Neo Manhattan.
Chris Evanz
Tetsuo (called...hum...Billy?) with a Pirelli T shirt.
Product placement.

God, I'm so happy that it's been aborted...
Demongod20 - 2/9/2014, 1:38 PM
@ Tevii

You only have one chance to get it right the first time. I'd rather them put it off, sort everything out, and get it right than throw some unpalatable garbage together and kick it out there.
LEOSTRATOR - 2/9/2014, 1:51 PM
So glad they didn't go ahead with the white wash of Akira. One of the best anime movie ever.
marvel72 - 2/9/2014, 4:13 PM
akira fantastic concept art, however thank f*ck it didn't get made with it all being americanised.

oblivion love the movie & this coming from someone who doesn't really like tom cruise that much.
