Watch Jean-Claude Van Damme Wearing The Original PREDATOR Costume

Did you know, Jean-Claude Van Damme ("Bloodsport") was originally cast as the monster in John McTiernan's 1987 film, Predator? Well, he was. Come see the Muscles From Brussels wearing the original costumes designed for the film.

Before the award-winning creature designer, Steve Wang, designed the look of the Predator that we all know and love, there was a much different version conceived with "backward bent reptilian legs, extended arms" and an insect-like facial sculpt. That original version of the monster didn't require a tall actor like Kevin Peter Hall, who played the final version of the monster, so they hired then-newcomer, Jean-Claude Van Damme ("The Quest"). In the video below, special effects guru, Steve Johnson, recounts the challenges the Muscles From Brussels encountered on his first big Hollywood production. There's also some rare footage of the Sudden Death actor in the original monster suits.
Arnold Schwarzenegger stars in this action-packed adventure story of fighting men pitted against an unseen enemy, a force more powerful than their fiercest weapons. Recruited by the CIA to rescue hostages held by guerrilla fighters in a Central American country, Schwarzenegger and his men encounter an enemy unimaginably more deadly than any on Earth - because the Predator is not of this Earth. Packed with spectacular special effects and combat scenes of gut-wrenching power, Predator is the most terrifying Schwarzenegger movie yet.

Cast: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers, Kevin Peter Hall & Bill Duke
Director: John McTiernan * Writers: Jim Thomas, John Thomas

Off the boat from Belgium? Really?

JCVD has had his share of bullshit in his career, and I'm sure he had this pipe-dream of going to Hollywood and becoming a star, especially with that era's rising interest in martial artists. His failures have humbled him.

I remember I read somewhere that Van Damme wanted to impress some agent or somethin', so he throws a high kick at the bloke's head, and it misses by, like.. two inches (he missed intentionally, of course. The whole point was precision). Now, this was waaaaaaaaaay back before he was known, so I can understand the, ah.. enthusiasm, but yeah..

That'll either impress someone, or have the cops crawlin' up your arse. He's lucky it wasn't the latter.

Heh, Shane..

"JEEZ, YOU GOT A BIG PUSSY."

Mysterion - 4/8/2014, 9:29 AM
talk about the biggest bullet in Hollywood history dodged....yes even bigger than Tim Burtons Superman movie. We almost didnt have one of Hollywoods most iconic Alien of all time.
Doopie - 4/8/2014, 9:33 AM

JaiHo - 4/8/2014, 9:37 AM
Holy shit, is that what the Predator was supposed to look like? Like a giant ant?!
GodzillaKart - 4/8/2014, 9:37 AM
That was actually interesting as hell.
GodzillaKart - 4/8/2014, 9:39 AM
@JaiHo: LMAO! Your outrage reminds me of this:

ManDeth - 4/8/2014, 9:56 AM
Van Damme got his 1st starring role after spending time in a room alone with some exec and "impressing him".

Love JCVD. Too bad he turned out so many turds. The movie "JCVD" is one of his finest.
DrVenkman - 4/8/2014, 10:07 AM

DrVenkman - 4/8/2014, 10:14 AM
He totally should have played Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat
csdot - 4/8/2014, 10:20 AM
Stan Winston famously designed the Predator on a plane with James Cameron not Steven Wang
