The Hollywood Reporter reports, Gareth Edwards' Godzilla is expected to pull in over "$60 million in its North American debut," which is May 16th. Some observers tell THR Godzilla "could clear $70 million." The 1998 Godzilla, which starred Matthew Broderick ("War Games") and was directed by Roland Emmerich ("Independence Day"), debuted Memorial Day weekend with $55 million. That was a huge disappointment as many observers predicted the 1998 film could open as high as $90 million. Hopefully this time the King of Monsters can exceed expectations.
The movie, hoping to finally launch a Hollywood studio franchise headlining the giant lizard, could be a defining moment for Legendary Pictures, which spearheaded the $160 million reboot. Legendary co-financed 75 percent of Godzilla, with Warner Bros. putting up the rest of the money. Godzilla opens theaters in in North America May 16. It makes its international assault at the same time. Box office observers believe Godzilla will have even more strength overseas.
Legendary Pictures: Godzilla -- An epic rebirth to Toho's iconic Godzilla, this spectacular adventure pits the world's most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity's scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence. Gareth Edwards directs Godzilla, which stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, and Juliette Binoche, with David Strathairn and Bryan Cranston. The screenplay is by Max Borenstein, Frank Darabont, and Dave Callaham. Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni are producing with Mary Parent and Brian Rogers. Alex Garcia and Patricia Whitcher are the executive producers, alongside Yoshimitsu Banno and Kenji Okuhira. The film is from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures. - Cinema Blend

GODZILLA will stomp into theaters May 16, 2014.

Ah is that a good thing or a bad thing?!
TheManFromMars - 4/24/2014, 4:27 PM
I second @Niklander's question: Is this better, worse, or just as good as it was expected?
thewonderer - 4/24/2014, 4:27 PM
More people need to go out and watch The Raid 2. Not only the best film this year but one of the best films of all time.

Holy shit, the action scenes are downright phenomenal. As good as Godzilla looks, Raid 2 deserves a lot of success too.
TheAbaryMan369 - 4/24/2014, 4:28 PM
Even though I'm not looking forward to this as much as many other people, I think it could potentially be great if they had the right combination between Godzilla and the humans dealing with the attacks. Too much of one or the other isn't good.
Ramiel - 4/24/2014, 4:39 PM
Sounds about right. It could open lower, but I predict a $65M opening.
Curmudgeon - 4/24/2014, 4:44 PM
As for if it's a good or bad thing...

Consider that only 14 movies (or less) per year open above $50 mil.
Arrow96 - 4/24/2014, 4:45 PM
Hm, not bad, it's okay I guess. But I hope it brings in more.
marvel72 - 4/24/2014, 4:45 PM
this is only america, worldwide is what matters.
ALegendaryPanda - 4/24/2014, 4:46 PM
I hope it gets even higher than that! But 70 million is definitely good.
dinkinflicka - 4/24/2014, 4:50 PM
If this movie doesn't outgross WWZ I'll be shocked granted it doesn't have Brad Pitt. It has 160 million dollar budget so I'd expect it to gross at least that much in the US. I expect it will at least gross as much if not more then Pacific Rim. So if it finishes north 500 million worldwide I'm sure they be happy.
0megaDaGod - 4/24/2014, 4:50 PM
The KING deserves more
KallarkKent - 4/24/2014, 4:51 PM
I am just really hoping it's a good movie.
NICKHART - 4/24/2014, 4:54 PM
i will be there opening night.
NeoBaggins - 4/24/2014, 5:05 PM
I'm tired of all the trying to make it super serious and dramatic. Over-emotional Bryan Cranston yelling and crying in his palm. This is a Godzilla movie. Adventure and Fantasy.

Can't wait to see a little personality and character in this.
Baconman21 - 4/24/2014, 5:06 PM
I think that it will be a lot better than x men and spiderman. The story looks like it could actually be great. I would love to see this movie become number one the same week that x men is released just so fox can look dumb. They haven't given us a proper representation of the x men and its just silly now.
MrDonut - 4/24/2014, 5:08 PM
Haven't seen any thing else Gareth Edwards directed but from the trailers, this film looks very well directed (as in perfect realistic/gritty/fantasy balance)... Long story short, whilst I've said it before, I'll say it again; Edwards looks like a solid candidate in my eyes to direct Justice League!
SuperCat - 4/24/2014, 5:09 PM
Seventy mil sounds good for an opening weekend.

Melkaticox - 4/24/2014, 5:10 PM
@NeoBaggins
"This is a Godzilla movie. Adventure and Fantasy"
"Adventure and fantasy"
"fantasy"
"Godzilla movie"
"Adventure and fantasy"

... ... ...
batz11 - 4/24/2014, 5:11 PM
Can't wait...
SuperCat - 4/24/2014, 5:12 PM
CaptainSporty - 4/24/2014, 5:12 PM
alright. but ik if ill be able to see it. AALL THESE DAMN MOVIES COME OUT IN MAY?! i guess ill HAVE to watch the free version o movie4k in shit quality
NeoBaggins - 4/24/2014, 5:17 PM
@Baconman21

I'm curious. Can you give me some examples of "proper representation" of existing CBMs in comparison to the X-MEN series which you say do not properly represent the property.
Melkaticox - 4/24/2014, 5:27 PM
Holy hell, what is wrong with you guys and piracy?! And least I have an excuse, original DVDs are impossible to find in my country. And when they are found, they're expensive as all hell. Not even exaggerating.

Ahem, really hope this one ends up being good :S or I won't have anything else to see after I invite my mom to see DOFP.
And don't get me started on what will happen if that one ends up being another The Last Stand.

I guess there's Maleficent, How to Train Your Dragon 2 and "Of The Of The Of The" until GOtG is released, then there's...Big Hero 6 and...Big Hero 6. Maybe 22 Jump Street will be the first comedy movie I'll be paying to see in ages (or not).
Oh, and TransNOTmers. I'd rather see The Fault in Our YA Book Adaptations
Melkaticox - 4/24/2014, 5:28 PM
...I guess there IS something to see after Days of Future Past. Maybe.
NoPhucksGiven - 4/24/2014, 5:31 PM
zilla is about to make some moves.
fettastic - 4/24/2014, 5:35 PM
Sony Godzilla
Cost: $130M
Opening: $55M
Verdict: HUGE BOMB!

Legendary Godzilla
Cost: $160M
Opening: $60M
Verdict: MAD PROFIT YO!

Someone needs to explain this math to me.
GodzillaKart - 4/24/2014, 5:41 PM
@Fett: The Sony Godzilla certainly wasn't a bomb. It just didn't hit expectations and generally sucked.

Worldwide it made 380 on a 130 budget.
Ryguy88 - 4/24/2014, 5:46 PM
Marvel72, studios keep a much higher percentage of domestic box office revenue than they do foreign. Domestic does matter and it is also easier to compare it to older movies because the market has not drastically changed over the years.
kalelhawj - 4/24/2014, 5:51 PM
This movie is going to surprise a lot of people... I bet it out perform Cap 2 a the BO.
ShelfPorn - 4/24/2014, 6:07 PM
I am boxing up all of my money and sending it to them now based solely upon that Wonder Con trailer.
knocturnal - 4/24/2014, 6:40 PM
Godzilla vs king Kong= guaranteed 150 mil opening get it done!
Jobin - 4/24/2014, 7:17 PM
knocturnal,
HELL YES! KK vs G. DO IT NOW!
Jobin - 4/24/2014, 7:18 PM
Set up: After the events of Godzilla. Mad Scientist inject (insert serum/dna/mutagen) into a Gorilla and BOOM.
Jobin - 4/24/2014, 7:19 PM
*Mutagen/DNA/Serum farmed from MUTO's or Godzilla flesh...etc...
Ha1frican - 4/24/2014, 7:55 PM
Neobaggins watch the original Gojira and then tell me Godzilla is about adventure and fantasy.
Ha1frican - 4/24/2014, 7:59 PM
Knocturnal thats a 2 second movie lol I love Kong but he'd just get stepped on
beane2099 - 4/24/2014, 8:19 PM
@thewonderer

I [mostly] agree. I don't know about the best movie of all time but The Raid 2 kicked a lot of ass.
MightyZeus - 4/24/2014, 8:26 PM
I have a feeling that Godzilla may make more money than that prediction. If i'm proven wrong then so be it.

I'm looking forward towards the King making his return to the big screen.
beane2099 - 4/24/2014, 8:27 PM
$60-$70 million domestic is a good opening. Just like a movie doesn't have to hit a billion dollars to be successful they don't have to open at $100-$150 million either. Pacific Rim opened at $37 million. So 60-70 would be a good thing here. I think it will be higher myself but whatever. As a [very] long time Godzilla fan it'll feel good to (hopefully) see the stain of the Sony film get washed away.
SpiderFraud - 4/24/2014, 8:36 PM
@Ha1frcan

The first Godzilla movie is the best one out of the ones I seen IMO. I'm glad this new one is similar to the original.
