Channing Tatum Says He'd Like To "Change The Superhero Movie" With GAMBIT

Although the 22 Jump Street actor still hasn't been officially announced as taking the role of the 'Ragin Cajun' in Fox's X-Men Universe, he definitely has a lot of ideas about what he'd like to do with the character. He also suggests that we might see a solo movie before Apocalypse.

Even though producer Lauren Shuler Donner seems pretty certain that she's found her new Gambit in Channing Tatum, the actor still hasn't officially signed on to play the role -- though while talking to MTV he admits that things are starting to "chug forward". Rumors suggested that should Tatum sign on, that he'd appear as Remy LeBeau in the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse, but it sounds as if the conversation has actually been leaning towards a solo outing for the card-charging mutant first.

“I’ve been pretty vocal about wanting to be the part of Gambit for a very long time. It's a weird, pinching-myself moment that we're even having the conversation. We've talked about it being a standalone, first, and actually trying to change the ‘hero, superhero movie.’ Because Gambit is not your typical hero. He’s a thief. He walks on the gray. I’m hoping we can change it a little bit, and then ultimately feather into the other ones.”

That's all very well, but could Gambit sustain his own solo adventure? The character was pretty popular at one point, but over the years many fans began to consider him a bit of a one-trick pony. Still, I guess it's all about how he's presented on screen. Do you guys think Tatum is right for the role? Is Gambit the character to "change the superhero movie" landscape? Sound off below.

I'm excited to see what Tatum brings to Gambit over the last guy.
Maven - 6/6/2014, 6:53 AM
Come on man, just confirm.
TheRationalNerd - 6/6/2014, 6:55 AM
Yeah, I'm cool with him being Gambit too. Looking forward towards seeing his take on the character. And it's cool that he knows a few characteristics of the character as well.

"Trying to change the ‘hero, superhero movie.’ Because Gambit is not your typical hero."

They havn't made a Superhero movie since Rise Of The Silver Surfer, unless you count the final battle of First Class

How's about just focusing on forming a mold before you worry about breaking it. Still can't believe this guy is Gambit
MexicanChinman - 6/6/2014, 6:59 AM
While I would prefer someone else as Gambit, I'm good with Tatum as Gambit. That Foxcapture film looks like Tatum will finally give a great dramatic performance for once.
Pasto - 6/6/2014, 6:59 AM
It's about time that Fox tries to make an actual superhero flick.
Maven - 6/6/2014, 7:02 AM
Tatum makes the Apocalypse cast seem awkward IMO. Hope for the best though...
MexicanChinman - 6/6/2014, 7:02 AM
@0megaDaGod, just have faith that he will bring the character justice, because you have to hope for the best since complaining (not you but everyone in general) on the internet won't change studios' mind.
Maven - 6/6/2014, 7:03 AM
I'm betting they're going with fresh faces for young Scott-Jean-Kurt-Storm.
thewonderer - 6/6/2014, 7:03 AM
Seriously trying to understand what the hell Pasto and Omegadagod are even saying.

The "these are not superhero movies" shitck? If you're gonna troll, troll. Don't pussyfoot

Disappointed in you guys.
DEVLIN712 - 6/6/2014, 7:04 AM
Wait... something isn't right... all Tatum ever says about Gambit is "Gambit was the only superhero I really followed.… He was the most real to me. He just looked cool to me. I've always loved him."
Pasto - 6/6/2014, 7:04 AM

Marc Webb spread his legs when people didn't like Shailene Woodley as MJ. So the internet does have an ounce of power.

An ounce.
MexicanChinman - 6/6/2014, 7:04 AM
@Pasto, Daredevil is a superhero film...
Maven - 6/6/2014, 7:06 AM
Poor Hugh. He really is going to be the grandpa on set this time around.

I'll let 0mega handle this. I don't have time for your bullshit.
MexicanChinman - 6/6/2014, 7:09 AM
@Pasto, I don't think people complaining on the internet about Woodley made her scenes get cut. I don't know if you saw the movie but there was a lot different plots in the film and those scenes would be to much. The reason her scenes were cut is because the filmmakers didn't want to take away from Gwen's and Peter's relationship.
FastFlames - 6/6/2014, 7:10 AM
Mr. Tatum, why did Gambit walk into a gay bar working a bannanna suit?
Jollem - 6/6/2014, 7:10 AM
this sounds like good. and it'll give the marvel studios trolls another thing to bitch and whine about. good times

Sadly I did see the film...
GliderMan - 6/6/2014, 7:12 AM
Stop arguing, start talking about how there needs to be another X-Men movie in the present day.
Jollem - 6/6/2014, 7:12 AM
marc webb stated he didn't include mj to focus more on gwen stacy. silly Pastroll
McNyagano - 6/6/2014, 7:12 AM
@thewonderer

There's so much irony in your post. However...
GliderMan - 6/6/2014, 7:12 AM
And by that I mean original cast/characters.
Jollem - 6/6/2014, 7:14 AM
yeah, i'm pretty sure in x 1-3 humanity and the world was being saved. same thing with first class and dofp

"Is Gambit the character to "change the superhero movie" landscape? "

Nope, not with Fox he won't. I'll be happy to admit I was wrong if that's the case but as for now, nah.
SuperCat - 6/6/2014, 7:16 AM
Tatum sucks!

WinterSoldier33 - 6/6/2014, 7:21 AM

ATrueHero1987 - 6/6/2014, 7:24 AM
Did @thewonderer call people trolls when he one of the notorious trolls on this site? What the HELL has he been sipping on?lol

Anyway, I think Gambit can sustain a few solo films. He's one of the few X-Characters that can.
ManCalledSting - 6/6/2014, 7:25 AM
Let's hope so, cuz I'm tired of generic films, that try to please everyone, instead of allowing creative freedom. Tatum has really grown as an actor, and I'm exited to see how he does
AXE - 6/6/2014, 7:25 AM
Dude looks more and more like gambit to me to be honest

GodzillaKart - 6/6/2014, 7:27 AM
Not a huge fan of Channing, but I'd check it out. Also not a huge fan of Fox's X-verse. I've enjoyed each movie, but IMO only X2 and FC were great. DOFP was fun, but outside of the Quicksilver scene, forgettable. No emotional weight.
BoomTubeB - 6/6/2014, 7:29 AM
tatum came along way since step it up! he's ok !I'm not a big gambit fan!
Pasto - 6/6/2014, 7:29 AM

It's very ironic isn't it xD
Gamera623 - 6/6/2014, 7:30 AM
"Stop arguing, start talking about how there needs to be another X-Men movie in the present day."

Why? I think the movies being period peices is awesome.

If I had to make a stand-alone Fantastic Four movie for instance...I would set it in the 70 like the original books. Have Reed blast into space because he wants to beat to do it before the Ruskies.
Id have Jhonny Storm call people Daddy O and all the men on the street wear trenchcoats and hats Mad Men style.

But thats just me...Im one of the 1% who liked The First Avenger just a hair more than The Winter Soldier. And one of the reasons was because it was a period piece.
Jollem - 6/6/2014, 7:30 AM
stop bitching at thewonderer. bitch at the marvel studios trolls
Jollem - 6/6/2014, 7:31 AM
dofp is one of the best cbms
jimoakley666 - 6/6/2014, 7:31 AM
Can't wait to see Jackman kick his arse.
