Ridley Scott Says BLADE RUNNER 2 Script Written; Likely Shoot Before PROMETHEUS Sequel

Scott's next movie will be another sci-fi adaptation called The Martian with Matt Damon, but once he's done with that the director tells EW he'll be moving right on to the sequels to both Prometheus and Blade Runner; with the latter shooting first.

Ridley Scott is nothing if not busy. The iconic director is currently putting the finishing touches to Exodus: Gods and Monsters starring Christian Bale and Joel Edgerton, and then he'll be moving on to an adaptation of Andy Weir’s sci-fi novel, The Martian, which is set to star Matt Damon. But where does that leave these sequels to Blade Runner and Prometheus we've been promised? Well, according to Scott they're still happening, and Blade Runner 2 will probably be his next project after The Martian. “It’s written and it’s damn good,” Scott says of the planned sequel to his 1982 classic “Of course it involves Harrison [Ford], who is a survivor after all these years—despite the accident (referencing the actor's Star Wars set mishap). So yes, that will happen.” Ford has not officially signed on to star in the film yet, but if he's willing to revisit Han Solo after all these years, there's nothing to say he won't also step back into Rick Deckard's trench-coat. Of course if Blade Runner is next, that means it could well be a few years before we see a follow yp to Prometheus. "That’s the problem,” Scott says. “I’ve got a lot of ducks in a row. But they’re all written.” More at the link below.

Just do Prometheus 2 already!!!
SuperCat - 8/26/2014, 5:17 AM
I hope the sequel to "Prometheus" is good. The first one was disappointing.

“Of course it involves Harrison [Ford]"

@grif - You'll see this grif. You know you will. You'll get sucked in by all that sci-fi nostalgia! :)
DrunkenNukem - 8/26/2014, 5:34 AM
Blade Runner sequel???? why the [frick] did you wait that long?????
DrunkenNukem - 8/26/2014, 5:38 AM
it's like if FF Coppola decided to make a sequel to Apocalypse Now with Willard (Sheen)returning as the lead...

too late
DylansMyDog - 8/26/2014, 5:43 AM
Nope I have no interest in this. The first is a classic and needs no sequel. Not to mention the fact that Ridley Scott has really lost a step.
InfiniteMonkey - 8/26/2014, 5:45 AM
I'm with grif and DrunkenNukem

Bloody took too long on the Blade Runner sequel and Prometheus is such shite.

Unless they turn sci fi on its head and bring something that no one has seen before, its going to be shite. I'll still see it though,...torrent.

We would have these movies made a whole lot earlier if 20th Century Fox did not mess Ridley about when it came to the Alien sequel cos he was supposed to do it but the studio wanted the sequel to be more action packed, totally against what ridley proposed then the studio got a pitch by a upcoming director called james Cameron and he got the job, and because of this ridley said he would never direct a sci fi movie again!.

l just hope the sequel to blade runner has a great story, l would of hired Nolan to do it myself and Prometheus goes straight to the prequel to alien as it should have done

BULLSHIT THIS IS BULLSHIT.
Bladerunner ended without any of us knowing whether Deckard was a Replicant or a human and that is why the movie is awesome. It played with your head just like how awesome the ending for John Carpenter's THE THING both of these movies left the ending open for interpertation.Making a sequel to Blade Runner will entirely ruin that. Why Scott!? I liked Prometheus but this is too much [frick] this movie

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?? C'mon man...well at least we're still getting both. Prometheus 2 is one of my most anticipated sequels of 2016 man.
charlie2094 - 8/26/2014, 6:15 AM
Awesome stuff! Blade Runner is one of my favorite films, seeing a sequel will be great, assuming it delivers that is.

Much more interested in that than Prometheus 2 as well, so good to hear it going ahead first.
Lert - 8/26/2014, 6:17 AM
Knowing that they all are already written, I would like to read the books "NOW"....
fettastic - 8/26/2014, 6:20 AM
I think he needs to let a couple of these projects go to other directors so he can simply produce them. The Martian starring matt Damon? Oh please (smh). Let someone else direct that.
V8ER - 8/26/2014, 6:20 AM
He said "ducks in a row." Howard the Duck crossover confirmed.
fettastic - 8/26/2014, 6:22 AM
And frankly Blade Runner is just fine the way it is, in any of it's multiple cuts. I guess I'm curious what a sequel would be like, but an 85 year old Harrison obviously destroys it's central mystery. I'd frankly prefer the role was recast at this point, or better yet, just have it be about a completely different character.
DylansMyDog - 8/26/2014, 6:26 AM
Also the original Blade Runner was a special effects masterpiece. If they are doing a sequel it better be all shot in camera!
mbembet - 8/26/2014, 6:27 AM
Blade Runner doesn't need a sequel
fettastic - 8/26/2014, 6:32 AM
I don't want Prometheus 2 to suffer the A Dame to Kill For effect where people don't remember the complex plot of the first film and are confused by what's going on because it's a [frick]ing decade later. All the other Alien films had a fresh starting point that did not require a lot of history. The one exception would be AVP:R and that only came out 3 years after it's predecessor.
TheAmbassador - 8/26/2014, 6:40 AM
I'm probably one of the few who will admit that I thought Blade Runner was total shit. Not Amazing Spider-Man 2 shit, but close. I don't remember which version I watched, but that shouldn't matter because I can't imagine enjoying watching it again with 1 or 2 extra scenes being added.
yossarian - 8/26/2014, 6:42 AM
False advertising. I saw no blades and barely any running.
gambgel - 8/26/2014, 6:43 AM
I want that Prometheus sequel soon, so hope Ridley get it ready for 2016. No need to wait even more years
Snotzo - 8/26/2014, 6:51 AM
As long as Katy Perry isn't in it.
fettastic - 8/26/2014, 7:02 AM
@TheAmbassador, the first time i saw Blade Runner I was very bored by it, as were everyone else I knew. Probably why it bombed so hard at theaters.

It's a slow burn film and things are not overly explained. It's also extremely noir, which can be off-putting and come across as cheesy.

I came back to it when the DVD was finally released as a Director's Cut and found I missed the narration. Without it, it seemed even slower and harder to decipher.

I got the 4-disc Blu-ray which has 4 different cuts on it. At that point I realized there was something about that movie that I loved and kept drawing me back.

I still can't really explain why I like it. The production design which was so unique at the time but has been ripped off by all sci fi since is easy to identify as a reason, but also i think it's the simple, straight-forward story that is cluttered up with "bits of business". I think this is what alienated people originally because there's a lot of side-story that doesn't directly serve the plot and I think people got impatient with that.

Also, it's a [frick]ing UGLY world and I think people just got sick of looking at it after awhile and wanted out. this is why it works so much better on home video.
GodzillaKart - 8/26/2014, 7:07 AM
PROMETHEUS SEQUEL?!

Sweet Jesus. Can't we all just accept that it sucked sweaty donkey balls and let it die and be forgotten?

I realize a small handful of people liked it...but those people are about as smart as a raccoon fart.
ThePowerCosmic - 8/26/2014, 7:07 AM
At least were getting more of these worlds. If they suck just act like they don't exist. If they're great...we win!

2001: A Space Odyssey and Jaws are still amazing classics even though their sequels sucked. Bad sequels do not take away from classics.
NoAssemblyReqd - 8/26/2014, 7:08 AM
PROMETHEUS was great, if a bit too ponderous and enigmatic for most people's tastes (and the 2 dumb alien bait characters were inexcusable in an otherwise good film).

Considering every ALIEN movie after ALIENS was brainlesss crap not even befitting a place in the series, I'd say PROMETHEUS was several steps in the right direction.
Gusto - 8/26/2014, 7:12 AM

Skeptical Puppy is skeptical.

blackandyellow - 8/26/2014, 7:13 AM
I didn't know Ridley Scott directed Blade Runner. I might have to watch it now.
blackandyellow - 8/26/2014, 7:16 AM
Black Hawk Down, Gladiator, American Gangster ... Ridley Scott is awesome.
grifdeadpoolteabag - 8/26/2014, 7:19 AM
I never got the Blade Runner thing.

Wasn't Ridley Scott involved in a Dune remake?
GodzillaKart - 8/26/2014, 7:21 AM
@NoAssemblyReqd: Prometheus was not "a bit too ponderous and enigmatic"...it was absolutely and committedly DUMB. Dumber than every dumb Alien sequel after Aliens. Prometheus made Alien 3 look like Shakespeare and both AvP movies look like refreshing cinema fun.

Beautifully filmed. Wonderfully acted. Horrible film.

Amazing litmus test for identifying dullards and ignoramuses. Those are the ones that think it relatively not shitty.
BigMikeReviews - 8/26/2014, 7:38 AM
My god Ridley Scott is the hardest working 77 year old I've ever heard of
TheRationalNerd - 8/26/2014, 7:45 AM
@BigMikeReviews

Lol! Right?!
TheAmbassador - 8/26/2014, 7:46 AM
@fettastic

I'm pretty sure I saw the version with the narration which I though to be extremely corny and totally distracting. A couple things I didn't get, but probably didn't matter much anyways, was what Ford saw when he was tinkering with the zoom on some photo I think it was, and what the deal was with reaction to reptiles and the turtle questions.

It was unfortunate because I was really excited for the film after the first scene, then somewhere around the middle of the film I found myself just waiting for it to finally end. I don't really care for overt existential philosophy movies though either.
TheRationalOne - 8/26/2014, 7:57 AM
Blade Runner sucked.

Most overrated sci-fi film of all time. It's just [frick]in terrible. Only redeeming qualities were the visuals for its time. Other than that, it was bad.
BlackIceJoe - 8/26/2014, 7:58 AM
Seeing as it will be years until Prometheus 2 comes out why not let let Jake or Luke Scott make the movie. Their dad is Ridley so they know his style of filming and they have brought out good stuff too. If not them why not use Carl Erik Rinsch. Carl was originally the one to make Prometheus before Ridley came onboard.

As for Blade Runner 2 it will be interesting to see what the sequel will look like and be about.
cipher - 8/26/2014, 8:03 AM
I've never seen Blade Runner.
RetroFit - 8/26/2014, 8:06 AM
I am not amused! The best part of that movie was how it lived on in your mind regarding the question of whether he was a replicant or not. Why would they ruin that? For money? He can do other projects for money!
