Meet The Man Who'll Play Marvel's BLACK PANTHER, Chadwick Boseman Meet The Man Who'll Play Marvel's BLACK PANTHER, Chadwick Boseman

Two of the most exciting announcements made by Marvel yesterday were not only confirmation that we'd finally be getting a Black Panther film, but that they'd chosen the actor who'd bring him to life on the big screen. After the jump you'll find all you need to know about Chadwick Boseman.

Marvel's surprise announcement that Chadwick Boseman would be playing T'Challa on the big screen seemed to come out of nowhere, but for those that keep up to date with the CBM rumor mill, it won't have been the first time they heard his name mentioned in connection with the role. Credit where it's due, Latino Review were the first to report on Marvel's interest in casting Boseman as Black Panther all the way back in May of last year when they claimed the actor was at the top of a "very short" shortlist. Since that, Boseman has played coy in any interviews that quizzed him about this, although he never outright denied his involvement. He seems to be something of a DC fan too, having also expressed interest in possibly playing John Stewart/Green Lantern in the past.

So what should you know about the man who'll bring Black Panther to life in live-action for the very first time? Chadwick Boseman was born near the Blue Ridge Mountains in Anderson, South Carolina in 1976 (at 37 he'll actually be one of the older members of The Avengers), and is not only an accomplished actor, but a playwright and screenwriter too. He's a graduate of both Howard University in Washington, DC and the British American Dramatic Academy at Oxford, England. He began his TV career in 2003 with roles in the likes of All My Children and Third Watch, followed by film roles in The Express and The Kill Hole. Boseman really gained the public's attention when he played legendary baseball player Jackie Robinson in 2013's 42, and that was followed by his critically acclaimed turn as James Brown in Get on Up. He will also play Thoth in upcoming fantasy flick, Gods Of Egypt.

Physically he seems a good fit for Black Panther too. He stands approximately 6 feet tall, and has gained/shed significant amounts of weight for his various roles over the years, so shouldn't have too much trouble putting on mass for a superhero physique.

As I'm sure you all know by now, Boseman will debut as T'Challa/Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War in 2016, which will be followed by his solo outing as the character. The actor has also signed a 5-picture deal with Marvel, guaranteeing that we'll be seeing him claw his way into more than just those 2 pictures. So there you have it -- our new, and first, Black Panther. What do you think of Boseman for the role? Vote below and be sure to sound off in the usual place.

Well I never was a fan of Blade for one.

For two I've never seen the film and have no plans on seeing it.

And for three I really like Black Panther.

I can't really vote, because I've never seen this guy's acting. Get On Up and 42 are both in my Netflix queue, but they haven't come up yet.

I'm just crazy excited to finally be getting a BP movie. I am 100% sure that Marvel did not just pick his name out of a hat.

I agree with Thing94. I don't see how anyone can like Black Panther....with the character Blade being in existence.

Blade 1, 2, and 3 weren't true black superhero films?

Hmmmmm.....

CamtonoOfBeskar - 10/29/2014, 6:25 AM
Please don't be like the Walking Dead where in order for a new black character to be introduced on has to die.

The MCU is big enough for Rhodey, Falcon, and T'challa
RamonSuarez
RamonSuarez - 10/29/2014, 6:26 AM
If you've never seen Blade you really need to do yourself a favor and watch it.

Its when I read stuff like this that I know these boards are filled with adolescents with zero respect for CBM history.

Blade was such an important and underrated CBM film that's been passed over by the current generation of moviegoers.

RamonSuarez

Anyway, I just want this guy to nail it on the accent and demeanor. I am sure all the action, fighting, and stunt work will take care of itself - especially since he's in a suit and can easily have a double fill in for him on the more demanding physical work.
Pasto
Pasto - 10/29/2014, 6:28 AM
Just because I haven't seen Blade does not mean I don't have respect for CBM history. Thats an odd conclusion to make if you ask me.
RamonSuarez
RamonSuarez - 10/29/2014, 6:29 AM
And we already know this dude is more than athletic enough to get the job done after watching him perform in 42 and Get On Up.

Prince Akeem: [to hold-up man] It would be wise for you to put the weapon down.
Hold-Up Man: Who the f**k is this asshole?
Prince Akeem: Please refrain from using any further obscenities in the presence of these people.
Hold-Up Man: What?
Prince Akeem: I'm warning you. I will be forced to thrash you.

Black Panther needs to speak like this haha
RamonSuarez
RamonSuarez - 10/29/2014, 6:32 AM
No, its not odd. What is odd is someone saying they've never seen Blade and have no intention of watching it only to then call themselves a CBM fan. Only someone very flippant about CBMs can say something like this and not see the problem.

Its like me calling myself a Western movie fan and saying I've never seen Rio Bravo and have no intention of seeing it.
Pasto
Pasto - 10/29/2014, 6:32 AM
I hope Wakanda does not look like those pictures above. I always preferred the look from the animated Ultimate Avengers 2 film.
Pasto

I think you forgot to read that statement I made where I said I've never been a fan of Blade.

@MonsterSquad35

Best part of that scene as it relates to Black Panther is that the Stick Up Man was Samuel L. Jackson. He should do something like that to Nick Fury as a homage to Coming To America.

Black Panther takes his vibranium staff and pins Fury to the ground warning him against making a Panther thrashing.
Sulti1274
Sulti1274 - 10/29/2014, 6:36 AM
@Pasto
nah that wouldn't work for a live action film
T'challa is one of the richest superheroes if not THE RICHEST superhero in the marvel universe. so why should wakanda be a small castle? where is the excitement in that?

Which is the point.

Seriously, you should watch it. Its a very important film in the genre. Very underrated and unique.

Rhodey, T'Challa, Falcon, Blade, Nick Fury, Heimdall, Deathlok, Luke Cage and Misty Knight - Mighty Avengers short on Cap 3 or BP DVD. That would be awesome.

Black Panther could be amazingly beautiful, call me crazy, but I wonder if Mel Gibson would be an awesome director for this?
