Could We See John Cusack In Preacher?

io9 recently interviewed the actor about a possible role in a CBM, and he name dropped Garth Ennis's awesome Preacher..Well, he wasn't actually sure of the name..but anyway, read on!
io9:.."With comic book films being so huge right now in Hollywood and big-name actors like Robert Downey Jr. starring in films such as Iron Man, would you ever consider doing a comic book adaptation or a superhero film?"

Cusack.."I don't know, but yeah, for sure. I think the adult comics are some of the best film ideas out there."

"Are there any comics in particular out there that you'd like to make?"

"Not one that I particularly know that I would like to do, but whenever I've come across one, I've really liked them."

"Are there any [comic book movies] you've seen floating around in Hollywood that you'd like to see made?"

"Yeah, I can, there was one or two that I heard of that sounded really cool. One of them was about, I think... it's a vampire and a killer, and they're on the road, and it's this really strange story. I thought that sounded pretty cool. Also some of the obscure ones, I don't know if there are any more superheroes left."

"That sounds a little bit like Preacher?"

"I think it might have been Preacher."

"You should get involved with that!"

"I'm trying to. I heard about that one, I like that."

"Who would you want to play?"

"I'd say either the vampire or the priest. One of those two guys."

"So just the two best characters in the comic?"

"Why not?"

So, he's trying to get involved! Could Mr Cusack be being deliberately coy about this? Could he have even met with Sam Mendes about a role in the movie? Probably not judging by this..but, ya never know. Personally, although I'm a huge fan of Cusack, his name wouldn't be the first one that pops into my head when I think of an actor to play Jesse Custer..and certainly not Cassidy! But, he is a great actor so who knows.

Well i could see it!!!

[frick]ing good find @ ROR!

Man one day, we'll get our PREACHER, one day!
LEEE777 - 11/6/2009, 11:53 AM
Cool find there Ror :P
teabag - 11/6/2009, 11:54 AM
Well... Keanu did decent in Constantine, maybe Cusack could surprise us ;)
Shaman - 11/6/2009, 11:54 AM
No, No, No I don't mind Cusack its just the idea of a preacher film being made into a movie. Why does every comic book have to be turned into a cash cow... Watchmen was made to be a comic and look how that film turned out (I know some people here like it, but I personally didn't)

LEAVE PREACHER ALONE
FattSmelliott - 11/6/2009, 11:57 AM
@ FattSmelliott, it's obvious that you're fat and you smell. Ha, but really? Watchmen?! It was awesome! It was a perfect adaptation of the book, what was not to like about it?!
AdamFalcon - 11/6/2009, 12:12 PM
I for one would love Preacher but I think it would be must better as a TV series but only one that had a limited run of about 13 episodes or summit like that.
TheAnswer - 11/6/2009, 12:12 PM
I think im probably the only person who hated constantine.
MsKyle08 - 11/6/2009, 12:13 PM
You probably are MsKyle;)..ah no, I didn't love it, but it was a lot better than it had any right to be!

Adam, I agree, why anyone wouldn't like Snyder's take on Watchmen is beyond me. Was it different than the comic? Of course it [frick]ing was! It was a movie! Some people just cant accept the difference.
RorMachine - 11/6/2009, 12:19 PM
Watchmen was a great movie that gained from not having a giant squid lol

Constantine i agree with Ror...it was good but im not sure how :P
teabag - 11/6/2009, 12:21 PM
That's actually funny, i remember watching Constantine and hating it until i finshed it and felt like i enjoyed it... I mean, the ending wasn't all that Epic realy... I KNOW!!! Subliminal messaging, it had to be ;P
Shaman - 11/6/2009, 12:27 PM
I bought the bloody blu-ray of that! : D
LEEE777 - 11/6/2009, 12:28 PM
blasphemy!!!!!!!!!

Watchmen suffered from a squidless ending, and for me watchmen was OK, although the sex scene with hallelujah playing in the background for what seemed to be 30 minutes in slo-mo... was just.... awkward.

And remeber that Snyder had promised the most faithful adaptation of a comic book ever filmed (guess he hasn't seen Sin City) which we all have to agree was just BS.
Just like Cameron promised the movie that would change movies for ever with Avatar and so far... it looks extremely... mediocre.

As for Cusack in Preacher I don't like it, I have never been a big fan of his kind of acting (most of his movies and Nicholas Cage's just bore the hell out of me, at least when they are on screen)

Ror, still no news of a studio? hopefully it's not made by Fox.
NoobMike - 11/6/2009, 12:32 PM
Constantine was simply just..a good movie! Reeves may not be the most talented dude in the world, but he acted his cotton socks off in that, and although he looked and sounded nothing like John Constantine should have, he still obviously did his research cos he still nailed the character..maybe could have done with a bit more humor..My biggest problem was Chaz. They make a 35 year old friend of John's his teenage sidekick..then kill him and turn him into a [frick]in angel.(for those of you that have watched the alternative ending)

Noob, nah, unfortunately no word from anyone except Mendes saying he will definitely make it..he's just not sure when:(
RorMachine - 11/6/2009, 12:40 PM
Timothy Olyphant would be a great Preacher...

John Cusack is also a great choice.
SirPrize - 11/6/2009, 12:47 PM
HOFF seal of approval!!! ; D

LEEE777 - 11/6/2009, 12:53 PM
HA!!! Love that one, LEEE ;P

SP- I'm not too fond of Olyphant but i haven't seen Hitman yet and i haven't read the Preacher books. LOL
Shaman - 11/6/2009, 12:59 PM
Shaman do not see Hitman!
MsKyle08 - 11/6/2009, 1:00 PM
If you don't like Olyyphant, for Gods sake man do not watch Shitman! Watch Deadwood(the pic SP posted) cos hes great in that..and I actually could see him playing Custer based on his character in that.

You know what else was shit..V! What was with all the good word on here? Predictable, cliched, badly acted tripe that was so rushed, it had ended before it began. And the "teenagers" were about 35 years old. Why wont these shows ever cast a 17 year old thats..17?
RorMachine - 11/6/2009, 1:01 PM
cusack wud do well...picked him for star-lord of guardians of the galaxy
Anil Rickly - 11/6/2009, 1:07 PM
Shitman was awful, but Deadwood is great. That's where I'm sourcing his talent.

V sucked.
SirPrize - 11/6/2009, 1:20 PM
SHAMAN @ : D

SirPrize @ V was [frick]ing good man!!!

LEEE777 - 11/6/2009, 1:24 PM
Cusack could be cool - I doubt they'd cast him as Cassidy since that's a very Irish character and I'm not sure of Cusack's accent capabilities. But atleast Cusack can act and that's what we need.

With Mendes behind this beast and a couple solid actors - we'll all be ok.
Keven - 11/6/2009, 1:32 PM
I liked Hitman quite a bit actually.

But I was kind of rooting for it - so I'm a wh0re for that flick - I knew it wasn't good but I still was down for it. The choreography was d@mn good too - some of the fights were brutal as he11. Olyphant is good sh!t - that guy hauls some ass.
Keven - 11/6/2009, 1:33 PM
LEEE - V sucked. Nuff said.
SirPrize - 11/6/2009, 1:36 PM
It really did. It was just so predictable. I mean I know its a rebooted tv show that itself wasn't exactly original either, but could they not try to surprise us? Mom comes home to her spoiled brat dick head son whos "trouble" and obviously going to fall into the wrong crowd..The evil V's! Priest has a crisis of faith..which was handled with less subtlety than a juggernaut, its addressed in one line.."How can there be God if their are aliens?" Bravo writers! Flash forward about 3 scenes and Mom is holding hands with Priest talking about forming a resistance. That sums it up, no need to watch.
RorMachine - 11/6/2009, 1:47 PM
@sirprize I agree on the Timothy Olyphant for Preacher spot on but who to play the vampire??
Set2Fallfirst - 11/6/2009, 1:52 PM
Ror- HA!!! There you go, that's why i'm in love with all your reviews LMFAO :P

Well, i felt Olyphant totally sucked in Die Hard 4, shit Kevin Smith was more convincing. He sucked in Gone in 60 seconds as well. In fact the only time i kinda enjoyed his performance was in Rockstar. Other than that, i'm really not into the guy. Deadwood? Haven't seen it. It's a TV show right?

MsKyle- Oh i can think of something else to look at than Hitman if you insist ;P
Shaman - 11/6/2009, 1:56 PM
Robert Carlyle of maybe even Colin Farell for Cassidy..yeah I said it!

Yeah Shaman, Deadwood was a great show that ran for 3 seasons and was cancelled because HBO are bastards.
RorMachine - 11/6/2009, 1:57 PM
as vampire or preacher?
Set2Fallfirst - 11/6/2009, 1:59 PM
SirPrize @ I liked "V" and i was wanna of the ones that didn't care much for it. Loved the original series! But i was at awe with the effects they had, most of it looked big budget like, though i do agree with you, and you @ ROR @ the writing wasn't up to much and they didn't make it their own (So far), it felt like a complete copy of the original series, hopefully it'll get better on that front.

Still would've rather had a Laura Vanderoort spin off series of "SUPERGIRL" lol.

LEEE777 - 11/6/2009, 2:01 PM
Robert Carlyle!!!
LEEE777 - 11/6/2009, 2:02 PM
lol @ shaman. You should watch Damages. I never actually saw Deadwood but i heard he was pretty good in it. Its like trying to judge Natalie Portman's acting skills based on the Star Wars movies. He was good in the Girl next door too.
MsKyle08 - 11/6/2009, 2:03 PM
Robert Carlyle is an awesome actor.
MsKyle08 - 11/6/2009, 2:04 PM
Its a pity DEADWOOD finished, that show was a Gold Nugget in TV World!!
LEEE777 - 11/6/2009, 2:07 PM
I would select an Irish man for Cassidy of course. The two Ror has casted or my choice Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Cillian Murphy wouldn't be bad either.
SirPrize - 11/6/2009, 2:08 PM
Robert Carlyle is on Stargate Universe. Not bad choice either.
SirPrize - 11/6/2009, 2:09 PM
what is cillian murphy up to these days?
MsKyle08 - 11/6/2009, 2:09 PM
Deadwood was kicked to the curb like Rome and Carnivale.
SirPrize - 11/6/2009, 2:10 PM
I dunno. Cillian has that vamp look naturally.
SirPrize - 11/6/2009, 2:10 PM
@Set...Cassidy is the Vamp.

Leee, V had one or two decent bits..(Morenna bacarin being one of them!) but it was really a disappointment.

Yep, happy with Cillian too..In fact, Carlyle may be a bit old for Cassidy, I mean I know hes like a hundred odd, but he was bitten when he was 19!

RorMachine - 11/6/2009, 2:12 PM
i guess i shouldnt bother watching V on sidereel tonite?
MsKyle08 - 11/6/2009, 2:15 PM
What's wrong with HBO, i mean are they really against quality shows??? HBO puts out great stuff and fails while CW puts out shit and succeeds... go figure.

MsKyle- Is Damages a show or a film?
Shaman - 11/6/2009, 2:17 PM
its a show on FX.
MsKyle08 - 11/6/2009, 2:18 PM
I'm not usually too picky about these casting calls, as long you get a good actor for the role, but Cusack is way too old...

Both characters are supposed to be late twenties or early thirties, (Although Cassidy could be played by an older actor given his 'condition'.)

If they were to go with someone that much older than the character, I'd prefer Depp as Jesse, because he still looks younger than Cusack. Hell, the last time I saw JC he looked older than me!
Velox - 11/6/2009, 2:19 PM
MsKyle- Kewl...

Velox- that would mean that the artist wasn't too convicing. Every pic i've seen of Preacher had him lookin like he was 45 LOL But good call on Depp ;)
Shaman - 11/6/2009, 2:23 PM
HBO is amazing...its not tv its HBO :]]]
Set2Fallfirst - 11/6/2009, 2:28 PM
Shaman HBO run with some quality stuff..most of their stuff is actually great! Oz, Sopranos, The Wire, Curb..but they don't give things enough of a chance either. Carnivale was probably one of the best tv shows of all time..it was very well like too..just not well liked enough to keep bringing in the cash...or so they thought! Millions have campaigned to get another season out of them.

Velo, Depp as Jesse could work too...
RorMachine - 11/6/2009, 2:28 PM
The cover artist always draws the characters looking like they are in their 50s alright! In the actual comic they look more like this

RorMachine - 11/6/2009, 2:39 PM
I am a huge Cusack fan, problem is that Jesse Custer is 23-25 years old,and the book is really his coming of age story, so Cusack would be a HUGE mistake. Preacher may be the finest example of comic literature this side of Watchmen, let's not fcuk it up.
PopeBadass - 11/6/2009, 2:41 PM
ROR @ Yeah for V!!

CARLYLE great actor but has anyone seen that new STARGATE UNIVERSE, omg now that is really sh1t, its so slow an dire i might give up watching it lol!

I used to like SG-1 but UNIVERSE is horrible, where is all the good Sci-fi shows gone??

WAREHOUSE 13 and FRINGE aint that good either, though to be honest ive only seen two eps of FRINGE so far, so i gotta catch more of that.

CARNIVALE was one of the greatest tv shows ever made, i still don't understand such a quality show like that being cancelled?? When MEDIUM an sh1t go from season to season??
LEEE777 - 11/6/2009, 2:43 PM
Its a pity PREACHER didn't make HBO, coz i feel we'll be waiting a lot more years for it!! HBO had Gold there!
LEEE777 - 11/6/2009, 2:45 PM
Rome was so awesome. If anyone misses Sopranos - check out Sons of Anarchy - now there's a fcuking show and a half.

Actually now that I think about it - the guy who plays the lead on that show is from the Uk -he could play Cassidy.....hmm....
Keven - 11/6/2009, 2:59 PM
Not sold on Cusack.

MsKyle - You are certainly not alone. Constantine would've been great with Guy Pierce.
Keanu blows donkey balls. "IT'S FULL OF CAAAAAAAAANS!!"

Why not Rufus Sewell for Preacher?

Rufus Sewell Pictures, Images and Photos

"Make me Preacher or I'll pull my own finger!"
BillyBlack - 11/6/2009, 3:02 PM
Medium is on a public broadcasting station and Carnivale was on a subscription broadcast (HBO) station. Carnivale and Rome were very expensive to produce, HBO doesn't have advertisers to help offset production costs. Huge difference there.
SirPrize - 11/6/2009, 3:03 PM
Rufus Sewell would of been a great Constatine. I'm down with Sewell playing Preacher. Good prick there Billy.
SirPrize - 11/6/2009, 3:05 PM
Yes!@ Billy. Guy pierce would have been great as John.
MsKyle08 - 11/6/2009, 3:05 PM
Carnivale made Lost look like it was Lost. Carnivale had so many wel written layers and they intertwined into each other and made perfect sense. Hereos tried to mimick that story line, but they are loosing their pants on that series.
SirPrize - 11/6/2009, 3:06 PM
Sewell is a bit la di da. I actually think Clive Owen would have been a great Constantine..Pierce might make a good Custer!
RorMachine - 11/6/2009, 3:14 PM
john cusack isn't that great of an actor. i see no emotion from him. just him screaming. 2012 wont change my opinion either. get some people that know how to pull off a role when they see one...
kyle dalton - 11/6/2009, 3:58 PM
YYYYEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

look at my name
KillerOfSaints - 11/6/2009, 4:08 PM
Matthew Mcconaughey should be PREACHER...and Tommy Lee Jones as Saint of Killers
KillerOfSaints - 11/6/2009, 4:10 PM
Need an Irishman for Cass, and a Texan for Jesse.

I always thought Gary Oldman would make a good Herr Star. Mickey Rourke for Jody. Resurrect Marlan Brando for the Allfather.
juggy4711 - 11/6/2009, 4:11 PM
Talking 2010,, have you heard the latest,,, they wanna spin a spin off tv series outta it called 2013!!!!

We're all saved lol!! : D

BILLY @ Kudos!

KEVEN @ Thanx for the heads up dude!!

I think STING the singer/actor would've been the best CONSTANTINE!!! ; D
LEEE777 - 11/6/2009, 4:12 PM
Um @ KILLER @ Lol!
LEEE777 - 11/6/2009, 4:13 PM
Tommy Lee would be good bout how bout Clint Eastwood?
juggy4711 - 11/6/2009, 4:14 PM
i thought about Clint...he SHOULD be in a CBM
KillerOfSaints - 11/6/2009, 4:24 PM
CLINT has retired from acting!!!

Only part made for him is a BATMAN BEYOND BRUCE WAYNE, shame we'll never see it though.
LEEE777 - 11/6/2009, 4:51 PM
Saint was based on Clint so..yes please! Hed never do it of course. Tommy Leee? Nah, great actor, but hes not imposing enough. Ralph Feinnes for Her Starr, Katie Sackoff for Tulip, Jensen Ackles for Arseface!
RorMachine - 11/6/2009, 5:14 PM
I didn't know that @ ROR @ Kudos! I only knew CONSTANTINE was based on STING.

I second JENSEN ACKLES for ARSEFACE! ; D

LEEE777 - 11/6/2009, 6:22 PM
Heres a arseface towl for the dribble! : D

LEEE777 - 11/6/2009, 6:35 PM
I actually kind of hope Arseface doesn't appear in the first movie..hes funny but kind of a distraction, and in no way vital to the plot..course if Sherif Root is in it, he will have to be ..but, id rather it focused more on the main characters..theres enough of them to squeeze in there!
RorMachine - 11/6/2009, 6:53 PM
I wonder if when they finally get round to making this they'll make it up to date! I cant think of any celebrities that arseface could idolise that has blown there face off with a shotgun in the last couple years! ;)
TheAnswer - 11/6/2009, 7:12 PM
I still wonder IF they make it, how much will they water it down? that is why I want to know which studio is making it.

This has piss everyone off written all over it, from angel/demon sex, to god leaving heaven, and of course there's the retarded descendant of Jesus, the whole redneck treatment, the girl with one eye who has to marry and procreate with her brother, arseface, Jesus deSade and his parties, I mean there's just too much which is passable in comics since most religious fanatics stay clear of the devil's work, but a movie...I think would manage to make every religious freak put down their bible and grab their pitchforks and torches.

As far as casting, i don't think Ralph Fiennes would play Herr Starr, and Clint would be beyond awesome. And seriously Ror, Collin Farrel for Cassidy? That is just like casting Gerald Butler for Sandman.
NoobMike - 11/6/2009, 10:06 PM
Seems like I am a day late and a dollar short when it comes to comments but here goes...
When Preacher first came up as being made into a movie, my first thought was "HBO series." Its perfect- look at Carnivale, Six Feet Under, Rome, True Blood, and (my favorite) Deadwood. Those shows don't really hold anything back! You put Preacher on the big screen you have to tone it down, cut it to shreds and not get the better part of the story across, and piss off alot of fans. It would be a one-shot movie with no one touching after it bombed at the box office for a sequel.
Cusack? Like him just too "boy next door" for the part in my opinion.
As for Olyphant- loved him in Deadwood, not sure about him playing Custer. Ian McShane's character Swerengen (sp?) made that show. If you haven't seen it- imagine Shakespeare meets the dirty old West.
Synestro40 - 11/6/2009, 11:41 PM
I think I could actually see him as Jesse.
Bandrews1 - 11/7/2009, 12:03 AM
James Caviezel or Patrick Wilson or James Franco for Jesse Custer, Willem Dafoe or Christoph Waltz for Herr Starr, Michael Fassbender for Cassady, Woody Harrelson for Jody, Anton Yelchin for Arseface, Sharon Stone for Marie L´Angell, Kate Winslet or Sophia Myles for Tulip O´Hare and because David Carradine is not alive anymore Clint Eastwood for The Saint of Killers
AlexDeLarge666 - 11/7/2009, 5:24 AM
haha, how is it like that Noob? Butler is a Scottish, beefy actor, known for playing pretty physical and shouty roles..Sandman is an effete, thin demi-God. Colin Farrel is a hard drinking, kind of loutish Irishman...Whats Cassidy again??
RorMachine - 11/7/2009, 7:07 AM
Yeah he can "act" the part, but physically Cassidy is just a regular guy, I see Collin Farrel too bulky to play him, but what do I know.

Although I really don't care that much about casting as long as they keep everything there.

And yes Hitman blows big time
NoobMike - 11/7/2009, 8:42 AM
He would be a bit beefy i guess, but thats nothing that cant be changed with a diet of rice and bananas! Farrel makes some dodgy flicks but the boy can act when he wants to. Check out Intermission and In Bruges.. mix those two characters and you have a great Cassidy:)
RorMachine - 11/7/2009, 9:14 AM
Cusak could do a good job, but I'd much rather see Rufus Sewell.

greychild - 11/7/2009, 4:22 PM
He doesn't seem like he knows the comic too well...
NataliaRomanov - 11/8/2009, 3:13 PM
Lol NataliaRomanov, he seems as though he doesn't know any comic at all, probably he just wants to hop onto the whole comic book craze in Hollywood.
NoobMike - 11/8/2009, 3:37 PM
Hey Ror01

Isn't every Cassidy a hard drinking, kind of loutish Irishman?

hahahhahahahahh you still owe me a Jameson shot bub!
