Ghost Rider 2 May Not Star Nicholas Cage

Vulture have some inside information on the status of the sequel to the less than spectacular 2007 outing for the Spirit Of Vengeance...

Looks like we may be seeing someone else go all fiery skulled in a Ghost Rider sequel. Cage has already said that he would like to reprise the role and even gave an indication of the plot that it might follow..

"Yes, actually we had a meeting with the studio [Columbia Pictures] about a month, maybe three months ago, and we had a nice talk about that character and maybe taking him international... maybe to Europe. Go on a motorcycle tour through Europe and he's connected with the Church, if you can believe that. So it sort of has elements to it that are very much in the zeitgeist, like Da Vinci Code and things like that."

But that may not make any difference since the actor could well be tied up in other projects, missing Colombia's deadline to make the movie.

This from Vulture...

How badly does Columbia need to get the motor running on its Ghost Rider sequel? So badly that if Nicolas Cage can't commit to making it this year, they may have to make it without him. Insiders confirm to Vulture that Columbia is facing a ticking clock on the rights to the BBQ-skulled Marvel Comics character: Legally, if the studio isn't in production on a sequel by November 14, 2010, the franchise automatically reverts to Marvel — which means the comic company's new owner, Disney.

Apparently Colombia have asked Marvel for an extension so they can get Cage locked into the project, but Cage is being touted to star in a third National Treasure movie which could really throw a spanner in the works. Vulture also claim that .. FlashForward writers Scott Gimple and Seth Hoffman, overseen by their show's creator (and Batman Begins scribe), David S. Goyer, have just turned in a draft of a GR2 script, which Columbia will bring to a still-evolving list of potential directors.

So what do you folks think? Would a sequel work without a big name like Cage? Would a direct sequel work full stop or would it be best to wait to see what Marvel do with it..if anything? And if Cage can't reprise the role of Johnny Blaze, who would be a good pic to replace him?

If they tightened up the script and made it less cartoony, it would work. Even without Cage. It may be even more so!
thatiscrazy - 4/23/2010, 3:14 PM
It'll probably be Ryan Renolds or Chris Evens lol just kidding... kinda.

They should just tell a different story and not make it a part 2... its easier to swithc up actors, his part in this was forgetable anyway = /

No Cage?!
Thanks the Lord!!!
THEHAWK - 4/23/2010, 3:23 PM
I'm sorry, but I actually liked Cage in it. He is a hit or miss actor, but when he hits it, he really htis it.

He is passionate about the character and I say if we get a good script, give it to him, let him ahve another shot.
crazyray - 4/23/2010, 3:27 PM
@sir- CLASSIC!!!
RorMachine - 4/23/2010, 3:28 PM
Yeah Cage wasn't the worst thing about the film by any stretch..although the script did require him to over do it on a few occasions. The first half of the film was watchable, then it went to shit. Anyway, in teh immortal words of Big Daddy..

Take Cover Chaaal...and SWEEaaatch to KrytoNAAAAIIII
imnotwearinghockeypants - 4/23/2010, 3:30 PM
If they want it to be half decent, scrap everything that came before and go the horror route.
InTylerWeTrust - 4/23/2010, 3:31 PM
I certainly hope so.
Weapon420 - 4/23/2010, 3:32 PM
Let the rights revert back to Marvel/Disney and have Jensen Ackles play Johnny Blaze, keep the darkness to the character without him being a fan of the carpenters. Maybe keep Sam Elliot as Caretaker, he was great in the role.
ecksmanfan - 4/23/2010, 3:34 PM
Dammit Ror! I was in the process of making my article all pretty!

Ghost Rider wasn't really, really bad. Just really bad. Not a fan of Cage, so I'm ok if they choose someone else to play the role.

I still think they should just let Marvel handle it.
gost - 4/23/2010, 3:36 PM
I wouldn't mind Nic Cage again but I still think they should have gone with a younger actor for the part in the first place.
Frogman - 4/23/2010, 3:38 PM
let Marvel have it back then GR can be in the Marvel Cinematic Universe instead of Columbia's.
nordberg - 4/23/2010, 3:40 PM
Ghost Rider was ass. And no Cage would def be a good thing - not b/c he's a bad actor, he just ain't right for the role.
HelaGood - 4/23/2010, 3:44 PM
oh damn... and i really wanted him to do it again....
NOT!!!
HUSoldier - 4/23/2010, 3:45 PM

JoshWilding - 4/23/2010, 3:48 PM

SUPERBATSPIDERMAN - 4/23/2010, 3:48 PM
They should just do Danny Ketch's story for the sequel if they can't have Cage and have Vengeace as the villain that would make a great movie but they need to bring back Peter Fonda for Mephisto he was a good villain.
jarydevan - 4/23/2010, 3:49 PM
garrett hedlund for john blaze
andrew lawrence for dan ketch
JoshWilding - 4/23/2010, 3:50 PM
I'm hoping that the rights will go back to Marvel though because although Sony's movie was ok, I'd just be happier with the character being back where he belongs! :P

"Ghost Rider 2 May Not Star Nicholas Cage"

One can Hope.

Josh W is right.. Urban would be a good choice.

Codeseven - 4/23/2010, 4:13 PM
i liked the first ghost rider, it wasn't a masterpiece but it wasn't as horrible as most fans make it out to be.
here's hoping they miss the deadline and marvel gets the rights back!
Codeseven - 4/23/2010, 4:16 PM
keven@ i agree totally with the main problem with GR was the villains. cage was good and i think more cbm's need to find actors like cage that are passionate about the role.
johan02 - 4/23/2010, 4:18 PM
I actuailly liked Gosht Rider, even tough they messed up Blackhart and Cage did leave ALOT to be desired in the role of Jonny Blaze. who could forget his laughing/going mad first transformation, that was CLASSIC!!! and as much as I love Nick Cage I would agree he just wasn't right for the part. IF they do a sequal it would be cool to see more of the 90's style Blaze with the pony tail and attiude and all that, I don't know about going to Europe though
StephenStrange - 4/23/2010, 4:39 PM
personally I have no problem with Cage as Ghost Rider.

I really have never been able to figure out why so many people are down on that guy
JLanphear - 4/23/2010, 4:43 PM
I didn't like Cage as Johnny Blaze. He just didn't capture it for me. It just didn't work. I would be fine with someone else.
LEEE777 - 4/23/2010, 5:06 PM
SirPrize @ LOL! ; D

JOSH @ : P

Though i have no problem with CAGE in GR II!

I like the first one!
Joker1Zero - 4/23/2010, 5:14 PM
I'm not really big on Ghost Rider. I never knew much about the character but he seemed like a badass. I didnt really get that from the movie though.
Ryden - 4/23/2010, 5:31 PM
Heres hoping the production falls through early on and they aren't able to make the deadline because Marvel handling Ghost Rider is just genius. DEPP FTW!!! I don't care if he's too big a name I think he'd rule in the part!!
LEEE777 - 4/23/2010, 5:39 PM
Ryden @ Pity he owns DOCTOR STRANGE!!!! : P
lc - 4/23/2010, 5:42 PM
HATES THAT TWAT CAGE !!
SHAZAM171 - 4/23/2010, 5:57 PM
Disney is probably going to make Ghost Rider like this though.....
Ryden - 4/23/2010, 6:09 PM
@LEE- Actually he DOESN'T :) That's Liam Neeson's territory.
jatfly - 4/23/2010, 6:35 PM
GOOD I HATE NIC CAGE IN ANYTHING!!!!
madlove - 4/23/2010, 6:41 PM
The first GR was what it was. I say let time run out, and hand it over to Marvel. Disney has the money to make an outstanding GR film. The only problem is we'll have one less thing to complain about. Everyone wins.
sweetre15 - 4/23/2010, 6:49 PM
Supposedly from reading Goyer's earlier statements this would be a sequel but it would kinda be a soft reboot that puts Ghost Rider in a darker and existential place. It would have a HARD PG-13 rating and take place 8 years after the first film. Also no Eva Mendes. If no Nic Cage would be nice as well but I'm interested in this film.
conformist21 - 4/23/2010, 6:54 PM
good story and rated R,
that's really what you need.
Or make it horror.
RockNRollCC - 4/23/2010, 7:40 PM
@Ror Oh no dude! Now muslim EXTREMISTS are gonna give you death threats and crap! :0
lol and great big daddy lines. now that's something Cage was good in!

This is some prett good news. Cage wasn't too bad, he was just alittle miscast. And the movie wasn't terrible, it was just not good. We need a "hulk reboot" for Ghost Rider. that'll fix everything

but i still want a DAN KETCH STORYLINE!!!
kooldeath - 4/23/2010, 7:44 PM
Jense Ackels for Ghost Rider !! we all know he can handle supernatural stuff. I have alot of others for th is role. WHat about Bruce Campbell.. or Jeffrey Donnavan ( Brun Notice).

Sam Worthington is would be good.
Ryden - 4/23/2010, 7:51 PM
@kooldeath- Jensen Ackles would suck as Ghost Rider, he;s a crappy actor. And Bruce Campbell are you serious?

Sam Worthington would be awful aswell...don't know who Jeffery Donovan is though.
kooldeath - 4/23/2010, 8:12 PM
@Ryden...Jesen Ackels is better for the role the Cage. Cage did a campy version of Ghost Rider. Why does everyone hate Ackels ?? He is Awesome in supernatural. And Im serious about Bruce Campbell he's awesome. Donnovan plays Micheal Weston on Brun Notice on USA network.

But I was just thinking ...Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Ghost Rider. He can do it. I like him in anything he's awesome.
BaronBubba - 4/23/2010, 9:05 PM
Leee: Karl Urban is Marc Spector! lol

Dear Lord, please let the rights revert back to Marvel.
DasBoot - 4/23/2010, 9:07 PM
Here's hoping they don't make the deadline!!!
NightAvenger - 4/23/2010, 9:14 PM
I agree with THEHAWK,I loved the movie!
ElBicho - 4/23/2010, 9:21 PM
@ Ror,

Awesome stuff!!!

Though you should be careful my friend. You could be threatened via the interwebs.
jjmeylar - 4/23/2010, 10:49 PM
It would be nice for Marvel to get "Ghost Rider" and put him in the same universe as the current movies. Disney won't screw him up, like a lot of you say. Now, I loved the movie, but even so.
Vital - 4/23/2010, 11:05 PM
I hope it goes back to Marvel actually. They can revamp it and make it better and have him with other Marvel characters if they want.
