DC Issues Response To Orson Scott Card/SUPERMAN Backlash

After a surge of protests over the publisher's hiring of anti-gay writer Orson Scott Card to contribute to their new Adventures Of Superman anthology, DC has finally issued a response that may do little to appease their critics..

First off, we should reiterate what we mentioned in the teaser- this new digital comic will actually be an anthology, featuring an ever-changing group of guest writers, of which Card will be one. This was something the DC spokesperson was quick to point out when they released the following statement to The Advocate..

“As content creators we steadfastly support freedom of expression, however the personal views of individuals associated with DC Comics are just that — personal views — and not those of the company itself.”

Many have echoed DC's reasoning here, but I think what they fail to realize is that it isn't Card's "personal views" that have so many feeling outraged, but his actions stemming from them. As comedian Michl Hartney notes in his open letter to DC, “There’s a difference between having conservative political beliefs and being an active force of bigotry and hatred. Card is the latter.”. This has sparked a huge debate here on CBM, which - if your comments are anything to go by - seems to have left you split down the middle on the issue. There are currently over 8,000 signatures on an online petition calling for DC to drop Card as a writer.

Oh, shut up you pansies.
kevberg - 2/13/2013, 9:01 AM
Love this stuff.

To quote a great line from Demolition Man: " you can't take away peoples right to be a asshole"

Whatever this guy supposedly said or feels, as Long as he writes great stories and doesn't interject homophobia in his stories, what does it mater.

all these jerks aren't going after Jamie Foxx or Sam Jackson for saying racist sh@t?

BTW, When did superman become a beacon for Gay Rights exclusively? Supes is a superhero for everyone.

Paragon79 - 2/13/2013, 9:02 AM
Here we go again. The guys a talented writer, and DC wants to utilize his abilities, not his political views, which btw he's entitled to.
PC04 - 2/13/2013, 9:16 AM
@kevberg

That's because according to all the politically correct morons, if you happen to be black nothing you say can be racist. Only whites can be racist for some reason.

The population mentality is in a rapid decline.
Hellsing - 2/13/2013, 9:16 AM
Wait this is the same guy who wrote one of my favourite novels ever Enders Game. Wow didn't know the dude was anti-gay and stuff, wait that because its never really been reflected in the book, although to be honest I've only read the first book (yes I know I should probably read the whole series and his other work before I say that). But I understand peoples outrage towards this, then I can understand why some people don't give a shit.
kevberg - 2/13/2013, 9:19 AM
BTW, While I agree that disliking a group of people based on race or sexuality is terrible attacking someone and making it impossible for them to do their work or trade is JUST as dispicable.

This stupid tactic of putting pressure or attack their employer or employers sponsors is repugnant and cowardly.
Paragon79 - 2/13/2013, 9:22 AM
Really man? You don't think that pic is a little inappropriate?
Ramiel - 2/13/2013, 9:26 AM
It's hilarious how the pro-gay community is against bullying, but isn't that what they are doing right now? Bullying DC to remove this guy? The tolerant being intolerant as usual.
SamWinchester - 2/13/2013, 9:28 AM
KevBerg is an asshole.
JohnnyKrypton - 2/13/2013, 9:28 AM
I was more offended by the new 52 ;-)
Paragon79 - 2/13/2013, 9:30 AM
Theheat: that's bcuz as long as you agree with me, your opinion is ok and valid. But if you don't agree with me, you're wrong and a stupid head......I think that's how it goes.
Paragon79 - 2/13/2013, 9:32 AM
You might as well go on to attack Christians and Catholics while you're at it. Tons of them want gays wiped out.
SpideyQuad - 2/13/2013, 9:33 AM
What a copout
AlibiBreakfast - 2/13/2013, 9:35 AM
I love these conservative mouth-breathers on here bending over backwards in order to justify defending hatred. Bigots should receive no quarter.
RorMachine - 2/13/2013, 9:35 AM
darthdanimal, thanks for the advice, I'll mull it over.
Hellsing - 2/13/2013, 9:47 AM
[frick] all of you gays, anty gays, whites, blacks, browns, yellows, blues, multicolored. [frick] YOU HUMANS. I can't wait for my overlords and ladies the Na'vi to invade this retarded planet.

(I swear I'm not crazy)
PC04 - 2/13/2013, 9:48 AM
Mr. Card can say whatever he wants, he has the right to do so.

If DC doesn't like it, then don't publish Mr. Cards work.

"I do not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it" -Voltaire
ButthurtKurvos - 2/13/2013, 9:50 AM
Mr. Card loves the cock!
CaptainSpain - 2/13/2013, 9:51 AM
Oh, Gay inquisition and gay censorship in USA? In the land of the freedom and bla bla bla?
ups...

JorL5150 - 2/13/2013, 9:53 AM
this is the same stance as when studios put a disclaimer on dvd and blurays.
They want the commercial appeal of films actors and directors but they want to disavow any real or imagined "offence" in commentaries and interviews
Hellsing - 2/13/2013, 9:53 AM
@CaptainSpain (you better be from Spain) who do you thinks gonna win tonight Madrid vs Man U (get it Man U, ah forget it).
djwood - 2/13/2013, 9:54 AM
As a gay man I believe anyone who chooses to discriminate is free to do so. People will always hate gays. Some will hate black people. And some will hate women. I'm using those 3 examples because these groups of people have had to fight for equality in a way that straight white males will never fully comprehend.
This Card guy should not be forced to leave a job just because he's a vicious piece of shit. And I would never put money in his pocket by purchasing any of his material. However, I would sign that petition simply because he would sooner see me eaten alive by a pack of wolves than piss on me if I were on fire (sorry for the generic phrases.) To possess the mentality of people like him is gross.
TheSonicScrew - 2/13/2013, 9:55 AM
"You're a shitty person with shitty views, but hey we're gonna let you continue your highly successful job so you don't see any consequences from being such a prick"

If someone is extremely anti-gay (or racist or just prejudiced in general) then any company that values itself as having some ounce of decency shouldn't hire them. Simple as that.
GodzillaKart - 2/13/2013, 9:57 AM
Card is a disgusting and ignorant bigot, however DC's response is the correct one.
CaptainSpain - 2/13/2013, 9:57 AM
@Hellssing:

Real Madrid 1 Manchester 0

;)
Paragon79 - 2/13/2013, 9:58 AM
Any who is totally anti homosexuality, I've got three words for ya...hot lesbian porn....nuff said.
thewolfx - 2/13/2013, 10:00 AM
People are dumb and sensative

That is all..
Hellsing - 2/13/2013, 10:01 AM
@CaptainSpain I think its gonna be 2-1 to Real Madrid.
codydriscollsrightarm - 2/13/2013, 10:02 AM
You do understand that this isn't about his "opinion", right?

He's actively working to deny people access to one of the most basic rights, which is to marry someone they love.

That's not opinion. That's oppression.
Kaedus - 2/13/2013, 10:05 AM
To be fair, anyone who abuses this guy for his opinions is just as intolerant.

Let the guy have his opinions, everyone deserves their own. Ignore them if you don't agree. Judge him on his work.
Paragon79 - 2/13/2013, 10:07 AM
"God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve" sorry had too.
PC04 - 2/13/2013, 10:07 AM
Yes the man is narrow minded scum bag. Yes, he is even a piece of shit with values that are not generally favored by the majority of people, probably around the planet in this day and age.

However he has the right to express himself through literature or any other form of media, legally.

He is just a WRITER, he is not actively keeping gays from getting married. He is a minority in this world.

Don't buy this guys hate filled crap if you don't want to read his work. DON'T SUPPORT THE HATE.
GodzillaKart - 2/13/2013, 10:12 AM
@Paragon79: Actually man, if you look around you, God clearly made Adam and Eve AND Adam and Steve.
pud333 - 2/13/2013, 10:12 AM
DC can hire any writer they want. That's their right. And any writer can have any crazy opinion they want. That's their right. But I can refuse to buy this comic as a result of the writer's ridiculous views. And that's my right. My money is going elsewhere.
Zordan - 2/13/2013, 10:13 AM
whats wrong with homophobia?
lanceifer - 2/13/2013, 10:16 AM
Wow you guys are dumb as F*CK! "He has a right to his opinion"...blah blah blah.

To defend this mans hateful views is the same as inviting Hitler over for tea...because he's a great conversationalist.

Who cares what he thinks about Jews. He is entitled to his "opinion".

LOL

For a group of people who read or watch comic book related entertainment....you are sadly missing the point of most if not all Comic Heroes.
Whovian - 2/13/2013, 10:17 AM
Glad to see DC standing by their decision in the face of criticism. The values that made this nation great have been pushed into the corner over the last 50 years or so. I look forward to watching and paricitaing in the push back.
damntree - 2/13/2013, 10:20 AM
Marriage is a basic right since when? I'm all for homos getting married though; they should be able to be as miserable as the rest of us. I guess I can understand not wanting them married in your church or whatever but a license so they can combine and share their finances, insurance, and possessions seems like a non-issue.

As for this guy as long as he keeps his views out of his work I got no problem with him. Live and let live I say.
PC04 - 2/13/2013, 10:21 AM
@Lanceifer

He does have a right to his opinion. If he were to act on that opinion with violence, or assembling some followers to carry out his hateful acts as a direct result of his stupid mouth spewing hate, then we could a) incarcerate b) obliterate or c) castrate him ( the C) option was just for humor).

Tolerance doesn't mean be a pussy.
