DC Issues Response To Orson Scott Card/SUPERMAN Backlash

After a surge of protests over the publisher's hiring of anti-gay writer Orson Scott Card to contribute to their new Adventures Of Superman anthology, DC has finally issued a response that may do little to appease their critics..

First off, we should reiterate what we mentioned in the teaser- this new digital comic will actually be an anthology, featuring an ever-changing group of guest writers, of which Card will be one. This was something the DC spokesperson was quick to point out when they released the following statement to The Advocate..



“As content creators we steadfastly support freedom of expression, however the personal views of individuals associated with DC Comics are just that — personal views — and not those of the company itself.”


Many have echoed DC's reasoning here, but I think what they fail to realize is that it isn't Card's "personal views" that have so many feeling outraged, but his actions stemming from them. As comedian Michl Hartney notes in his open letter to DC, “There’s a difference between having conservative political beliefs and being an active force of bigotry and hatred. Card is the latter.”. This has sparked a huge debate here on CBM, which - if your comments are anything to go by - seems to have left you split down the middle on the issue. There are currently over 8,000 signatures on an online petition calling for DC to drop Card as a writer.

Wait this is the same guy who wrote one of my favourite novels ever Enders Game. Wow didn't know the dude was anti-gay and stuff, wait that because its never really been reflected in the book, although to be honest I've only read the first book (yes I know I should probably read the whole series and his other work before I say that). But I understand peoples outrage towards this, then I can understand why some people don't give a shit.

BTW, While I agree that disliking a group of people based on race or sexuality is terrible attacking someone and making it impossible for them to do their work or trade is JUST as dispicable.

this is the same stance as when studios put a disclaimer on dvd and blurays.
They want the commercial appeal of films actors and directors but they want to disavow any real or imagined "offence" in commentaries and interviews

As a gay man I believe anyone who chooses to discriminate is free to do so. People will always hate gays. Some will hate black people. And some will hate women. I'm using those 3 examples because these groups of people have had to fight for equality in a way that straight white males will never fully comprehend.
This Card guy should not be forced to leave a job just because he's a vicious piece of shit. And I would never put money in his pocket by purchasing any of his material. However, I would sign that petition simply because he would sooner see me eaten alive by a pack of wolves than piss on me if I were on fire (sorry for the generic phrases.) To possess the mentality of people like him is gross.

However he has the right to express himself through literature or any other form of media, legally.

He is just a WRITER, he is not actively keeping gays from getting married. He is a minority in this world.

Glad to see DC standing by their decision in the face of criticism. The values that made this nation great have been pushed into the corner over the last 50 years or so. I look forward to watching and paricitaing in the push back.

Marriage is a basic right since when? I'm all for homos getting married though; they should be able to be as miserable as the rest of us. I guess I can understand not wanting them married in your church or whatever but a license so they can combine and share their finances, insurance, and possessions seems like a non-issue.

As for this guy as long as he keeps his views out of his work I got no problem with him. Live and let live I say.

It never fails to amaze me how the supposedly "tolerant" people of the left are only "tolerant" as long as you agree with them. Tolerance is a two way street. People having divergent viewpoints on social or political issues is part of adult life. I may not agree with you, but I'm not going to be a little bitch and start calling you names or talking bad about you.

Personally, I prefer to see ALL politics left out of comics. I read comics to get away from that bullsh*t. I don't give a flying f*ck what your politics are if you leave that stuff at the door and write some great stories.

if it doesn't affect his writing his beliefs are his beliefs. There are 100s if thousands of anti gay people should we not allow them to work? if a brilliant heart surgeon was anti-gay would these people bitchin here not want him operating on their loved one to save their life?

I don't condone bigotry in anyway but we live in an ignorant world and persecuting people for ignorant beliefs isn't the way forward educating them as to why they're beliefs are ignorant is...

People keep complaining about his freedom to say what he wants, and he can do that. However people also have the freedom to protest. Freedoms work both ways, if what he says is ignorant people are free to call him on it.

So lets say I think Ror is an intolerant ass for the way he deletes comments and responds in an overly sensitive and insulting manner to those that disagree with him. Should I start a petition to have cbm stop him posting articles? What if I think his tendency to post articles on subjects shows his bias, and its a bias I disagree with? You know what? I think it'd be a waste of my time and if I'm that desperate for cbm news, I can go elsewhere (I don't). Besides, dc has editors, they will decide what goes into their product. And I'll bet you more of their staff is what you would call anti rather than pro same sex marriage, if they had the freedom to be honest about it and stay employed, so grow up and a pair.
People don't seem to realize that all this labeling and name calling is opening the door to fascist policies becoming the norm. Careful what you wish for.
