Mark Hamilll Is (Un)Officially Attached To STAR WARS EPISODE VII - "They're Talking To Us"

In an interview with ET, the actor reveals that he is in the early stages of discussion to reprise the role of Luke Skywalker in the next installment in the Star Wars saga. He also gives his "assumptions" on the plot, and talks about the direction he would personally like the movies to take.

At this point I think we had all figured that Disney had at least reached out to the stars of the original Star Wars trilogy to see if they would be interested in reprising their roles, but in an interview with ET about his new movie Sushi Girl, Mark Hamill is surprisingly upfront about where things ar at with negotiations. “They’re talking to us,” he reveals. “George [Lucas] wanted to know whether we’d be interested. He did say that if we didn’t want to do it, they wouldn’t cast another actor in our parts – they would write us out. … I can tell you right away that we haven’t signed any contracts. We’re in the stage where they want us to go in and meet with Michael Arndt, who is the writer, and Kathleen Kennedy, who is going to run Lucasfilm." So nothing signed yet. This conflicts somewhat with recent reports that Harrison Ford had in fact officially signed on to once again play Han Solo, because although Hamill is only speaking for himself here, he does go on to say that he would be quicker to sign if he knew his co-stars ("Carrie and Harrison and Billy Dee and Tony Daniels, everybody that’s around from the original") were also on board.

So what about story details? Again, we have unconfirmed reports that the plot will focus on the offspring of the original characters, and Hamill - although he says he's only guessing - holds to that. “I’m assuming that these movies would be about our offspring — like my character would be sort of in the Obi-Wan range [as] an influential character". He also reveals that he is with most fans when it comes to wanting less of a reliance on CGI in the new films. “I hope they find the right balance of CGI with practical effects", says Hamill. "I love props, I love models, miniatures, matte paintings — I’m sort of old school. I think if you go too far in the direction of CGI it winds up looking like just a giant a video game, and that’s unfortunate. … If they listen to me at all, it’ll be, ‘Lighten up and go retro with the way it looks.”

Goooood. Goood. (In Palpatine voice)
JDUKE25 - 2/20/2013, 8:11 AM
@eico Han may not be in every one of those movies though. He may only be in the first one and die. Luke is the only one I see making an appearance in all three, or at least 2.

Mark Hamill is the only one of the original cast I want to see. A nice Obi-Wan type role.
niknik - 2/20/2013, 8:17 AM
They better get the original cast back because the alternative of "writing off" those characters would be a great disservice to the long time fans of the genre. They are supposedly using Lucas's original film treatment which is the basis for this next trilogy (and one after that) that dates back to the writing of the original trilogy that should NOT be so drastically altered to fit the casting situation. Don't alter the saga to fit your needs now at this stage. Get them on board!

Second, assuming they all do sign, They should not be relegated to a back-up role in the story line yet. Episode 7 at the very least should centered on them. It is THEIR story that we have all been waiting to see continued all these years. Introduce the next generation but don't showcase them yet. Save that for the end of this trilogy and all of the next. There are after all 12 episodes to that treatment.

I guess this is good for some that they are in talks with Hamil, but unfortunately its the solo adaptations is really what has my interest now.
Wingding - 2/20/2013, 8:20 AM
Mark Hamill is a boss. Everything he said is what should be done. But, please get at least somewhat in shape for the new movies . . . you too "Leia"
AlternateNo4 - 2/20/2013, 8:23 AM
i'd be happy to see fisher in there too if she's relevant... like make her the chancellor, and maybe have williams as an elder statesman in the senate. but outside of nostalgia i don't really see solo, chewbacca or the droid having much of a purpose.
Facade - 2/20/2013, 8:24 AM
Great news! Now sigh him as the Joker for the Batman while you're at it!
NoAssemblyReqd - 2/20/2013, 8:24 AM
My understanding is that Hamill et al don't get much, if anything, from the continued use of their likenesses in STAR WARS materials over the past 30+ years. I'm sure they'll finally get the big bucks if they sign on for Eps. VII - IX.

This reminds me of an AMAZING STORIES episode, starring Hamill as a teen who is told by a leprechaun-like creature to never get rid of his toys and comic books. The guy lives as a drifter for decades, until one day, as an very old man, he is approached by a collector who sees all the "junk" and convinces him to sell it. So Hamill's character finally becomes super rich in his final years.
Super12 - 2/20/2013, 8:26 AM
@wingding - bingo. Mark Hamill is the man, but yeah I hope they lose a few lbs before filming starts. I think I'm actually digging the scarred face look though that Luke will have! Gives him a battle-tested look.
Hatsas01 - 2/20/2013, 8:31 AM
Give Mark a beard and a jedi robe and he's good to go. Let's get on with it. I've been waiting a quarter of a century for a decent Star Wars movie
Danbojohnj - 2/20/2013, 8:31 AM
Diet time and get the beard going.
I'm starting to get pumped.
luckylu - 2/20/2013, 8:33 AM
i always prefer practical effects. hope they take that route over a too much cgi like the last trilogy. hamill needs to be in the new movie. but ya, lose a few pounds good sir or use the cgi to do that :P
Deadshot - 2/20/2013, 8:33 AM
"Mark Hamill is the only one of the original cast I want to see. A nice Obi-Wan type role. "

I agree. I really don't see the need of a 70 year old Han Solo, but an older Luke makes sense.
HeadPool420 - 2/20/2013, 8:35 AM
The only thing that scares me is all this talk about the original trilogy's offsprings. I hope and pray that they dont cast a bunch of young teen Disney kids in the roles!!!!
Hatsas01 - 2/20/2013, 8:40 AM
I want to see Han and Chewie take the Falcon out on 1 last smuggling run just before they get blasted by the new villain's fleet. "Just like old time's kid!" - then BOOM!
Tainted87 - 2/20/2013, 8:48 AM
Mark Hamill makes the most sense.
RorMachine - 2/20/2013, 8:50 AM
Guys, you won't get a bunch of wooden kids in those roles with Abrams behind the camera. Remember the child actors from Super 8? Yeah.
BrownandYellowWolvie - 2/20/2013, 8:56 AM
Agreed with him that the movie needs more practical effects. It's not like they won't have the budget for it! do it right...a throwback would be awesome.
Greengo - 2/20/2013, 9:04 AM
This dude is looking rough.... even for an older fella...

He needs to get with Russell Crowe and learn a fitness regimine.
KarlRobinofEarth2 - 2/20/2013, 9:05 AM
Batz11 that is AWFUL LOL
TheDudeRises - 2/20/2013, 9:35 AM
@NoAssemblyReqd--

I've heard Hamill say that when they originally signed back in the day, Lucas specifically hooked them up with a percentage of the merchandising. Ol George was a pretty savvy businessman, even though neither of them knew exactly how massive this Star Wars thing would become. And Hamill, on a whim, asked George to add a clause that gave him one each of everything they made Star Wars -related. 35 years later, Mark Hamill has whole warehouses full of original, pristine Star Wars merch. I'm talking toys and everything. To this day he periodically receives shipments of more Star Wars shit. Dude is sitting on a pile of cash.

I want to say Hamill talked about it on a ep of Fatman on Batman podcast with Kevin Smith.
DarthTesla - 2/20/2013, 9:46 AM
Man, I want nothing more than top see an older Grand Master of the Jedi Luke Skywalker taking it to the Sith/Vong with his family by his side.
comicle199 - 2/20/2013, 9:46 AM
only wanted to ask a star wars related question

you know at the end of this weeks the clone wars (to catch a jedi) did asoka dive into level 1313
pintoman - 2/20/2013, 9:50 AM
Nice. Thank you Mark. Let's hope they do listen to him. Retro is the way.
Rothwilder - 2/20/2013, 10:01 AM
Super 8 was totally forgettable. A once watch movie with no staying power.

Putting the older actors into the new movies. Did Indiana Jones teach us nothing?

The Star Wars universe is huge. Take a chance and make it fresh.
banditt2 - 2/20/2013, 10:16 AM
I would want to see some of the older characters so we see more of thier story and introduce new ones. But the pase of the movie is what concerns me. The priquls were rushed they tried to fit way too much content. I didn't care as much about the new as i did with the orignal movies.
Also the CGI of the mid 90's is like a pencil and a peice of paper compared to the CGI of 2013-2014.
I'm excited to see how they turn out.
Christuffer - 2/20/2013, 10:58 AM
@batz11 - I wouldn't mind Zac Efron. He's grown up a little bit.

But seriously though, Mark Hamill has done like, one series that mattered, and now he's still got more sense than half the actors in all of Hollywood. GET ON MARK'S LEVEL FOOLS

DioFoRio - 2/20/2013, 11:19 AM
Cipher!LOL

Can't wait to see Luke again. And yes Old luke. Sure of himself Luke. Had enough of them damn kids...and their whacky dog too!
RPD - 2/20/2013, 11:44 AM
Have Mark talk to Hugh Jackman's trainer...
NeoBaggins - 2/20/2013, 12:59 PM
"they wouldn’t cast another actor in our parts – they would write us out. …"

Master Baggins likes that. All or nothing. Like it should be.

But there can be no true sequel to the STARWARS TRILOGY without the original cast. The notion has failure written all over it.

Spin-off films sounds lame too. They would be no more than MORE prequel shit. STARWARS should remain a saga of episodes in one large story. Its not the X-MEN series.
Durango95 - 2/20/2013, 1:00 PM
I hope they bring him back in a new Jedi council role. It would be awesome to see Hamill as Master Skywalker.
Durango95 - 2/20/2013, 1:01 PM
I would like to see some sort of Old Republic type movie too...
GUNSMITH - 2/20/2013, 1:07 PM
IF THEY ALL DO SIGN THEY NEED TO GET BACK IN SHAPE..ALL OF THEM, SPECIALLY CARRIE AND HAMIL..THE COOLEST JEDI'S AREN'T OUT OF SHAPE.
bababoozer - 2/20/2013, 1:32 PM
I bet they go for a big money grab and end up not doing the movie(s).
